Is it a sin or sinful to smoke marijuana?

can you operate a car when you have a buzz?
Yes, and my blood alcohol content is not over .08. I usually drink water in between drinks. Now driving when I am very tired - I definitely am guilty of that - and they say that is worse than people who drive drunk.

sure, ive never even heard of people crashing when stoned, if your that high then you are sinning. but just driving around after a bowl. no problem.

but i cant drink more than a couple or three beers and drive, not at all. and i weigh about 320, i just have no tolerance

It is possible to have a blood alcohol content at a level that does not constitute sin.

Why does any amount of THC content constitute sin?

Is ANY amount intrinsically evil?

my confessor says the amount that equals a sin is what allows you to make immoral decisions or lowers your inhibitions, for me at least that takes a heck of a lot more weed, then i can smoke.

but i have done some shameful things with just a few shots and a couple of beers in me. so now i avoid too much alcohol, especially if there are women around who are drinking too.

Not in my book and I don’t think you will find that in the CCC either (unless you want to be a Protestant and misconstrue what it really says and means).

You and I are definitely on the same page.

I wonder about using pot, in that we rely on our Church to guide us- the truth is guarded within her, and she teaches us to not smoke pot. As a convert to catholicism- it is a treasure to have the guidance of the Church.

the last time I smoked pot, I was very convicted in my heart by the Holy Spirit- I went to confession. I was hanging out with my pot smoking buddy (who doesnt know the Lord) and there it was in front of me- so I did inhale.

Situations occur, and I don’t believe in judging- a hit off a joint could be venial- smoking daily It is mortal. That is what my priest told me. He also told me it may be a good idea to stop hanging out with that friend.

On an open forum such as this, I wouldnt condone it- who knows whose younger eyes could be reading here…

many valid points about the evils in drug trafficing have been made in this thread.

We are called to Holiness. In the examples of the Saints that went before us, I don’t believe any of them have claimed that pot helped them become Holy.

Leaving your sobermind behind is not what we are created for. The “buzz” is doing just that… because if you told a policeman that its ok, you just have a buzz… he would take you to jail whether or not you had a blood alcohol level of .04. they’d send you home the next day- but they’d still arrest you.

Take care and God Bless-

 Please for all coserned: Go to search on Yahoo type in is Marijuana recreational or therepeutic? then hit-DID YOU MEAN; and go to separating the therapeutic benefits of Cannabis from it’s mood (SCIENCE DAILY) Thank you and need I say Merry Christmas! Nancy:😛

I don’t think any of the saints every mentioned that alcohol helped them either - but that doesn’t make responsible alcohol consumption bad. In NJ you have to have a BAC of .08 or greater while driving to get arrested. It may be different in other states.

if a policeman wants to arrest you after you’ve been drinking, even if your alcohol level is below what is legally considered drunk- he can arrest you. You won’t be convicted, but you’ll still spend the night in jail.

If I haven’t broken any law, and a policeman tried to arrest me - trust me - he would be hearing very quickly from my lawyer.

I don’t think you have your facts straight. Maybe they can arrest you for something else, but not alcohol since it is under the threshold. Otherwise, why have a law for BAC?

It is a sin. Marijuana is harmful. Period. Growing it yourself is illegal. Period.

I have seen no good evidence from medical professionals that even so-called medical marijuana is good or useful.

Peace,
Ed
Ed, you might want to read the article here: letfreedomgrow.com/cmu/cannabis_and_neuroprotection.htm Basically they are finding many uses for THC, the main ingredient in cannabis. There have been a number of studies that support the use, and I can remember that the DOD was involved…in fact the Army Hospital at Fort Riley, KS was part of it… One of my neighbors who was a Master Sergeant had glaucoma, and the had him rolling and smoking a couple a day… The THC as the effect of lessening of the intraocular pressure of the eyes, hence the retinas do not die due to forced blood starvation…

The article outlines a number of other uses in medicine for THC.

Here is another article: cannabis-med.org/english/patients-use.htm

Now is using it a sin… I honestly don’t know if sitting in a room getting stoned and listing to the “Lemon Song” or “Innagaddadivida” would be considered sinful. I would think getting stoned, followed by horrendous cotton-mouth, further aggravated by an insatiable case of the “munchies”… Now that could get rather sinful. You could commit the sin of gluttony by eating a 5 pound bag of chips, two large Domino’s pizzas, and everything else in the house.

Now, we have to keep in mind… “Buzzed driving = Drunk driving” and that’s how the laws are written. If you are buzzed (stoned) and you crank the car and go cruising…I’d say you were in a very sinful position. You’re an accident waiting to happen…much like someone with a +.08 BA. Don’t kid yourself, if you smoked some really good “bud”…your reaction times would slower than molasses in January…

Now, beyond the fact that you might be using it for “recreational use only”… I think the trick is: What makes it sinful is excessive use/consumption. Can’t get a buzz on just a little so you keep rollin and tokin… Its just like booze at that point.

Off the top of my head…I don’t think there are actually any laws against “smoking weed”…I could be wrong on that, but here in FL…its not illegal to smoke it, but it is illegal to buy, sell, possess, transport, or have within your possession within 1000 feet of a school. And they take your drivers license for 6 months to 2 years.

Here, check it out. Ask yourself is it worth it? usmarijuanalaws.com/ You can check out every state on that site.

I guess the real question should be: Is it foolish to smoke reefer and gamble with my life, career, and future just for the occasional “buzz”?

No, I’m not a “user”, but I am a “child of the 60’s”, and I currently hold 3 Federal clearance, and am subject drug and alcohol testing at a moments notice, anywhere, anytime, randomly. I don’t use any drugs, period…its a career killer.

Rob, thanks for the comments. Some parts gave me a very good laugh. I also think it would be a sin to get stoned and listen to Britney Spears. Listening to Eric Clapton or Santana on the other hand … you can’t go wrong there.

I also am subject to random drug testing at anytime for my work, so I am definitely in agreement with you there as well.

I guess I didn’t realize that breaking any law was at least a venial sin. IE speed limit 55 and I’m doing 60 I need to confess that? I thought it was just “church laws”. Anything I would realize after good examination of conscience. I haven’t seen this in any examination of conscience. Example: scborromeo.org/confess.htm

There are some actions which are black and white, sin or not a sin. You can’t have a little adultry or a little abortion or small murder. There are many other actions which may be ok or could be a sin depending on how you commit that action. Drinking wine, not a sin, getting drunk is a sin. Smoking dope, maybe not a sin, but could lead to sin. I personally don’t like it and haven’t done it since college 24 years ago. I may be more in line with RobHom, even if I’m not as funny! :twocents:

I would say it not unless you abuse it. However, it could easily lead to sin so I would treat it with caution.

It depends on the state. Wisconsin has two laws, operating while intoxicated and prohibited blood alcohol concentration.

To prove operating while intoxicated, it has to be proved that your ability to safely operate a car is “impaired.” There is no specific blood alcohol level needed to convict one of that. But a BAC>.08 is prima facia evidence that one was operating while intoxicated (i.e. the law presumes you were intoxicated at that point). From .05 to .07 there is no presumption, and the prosecution would need to prove that you were impaired and the blood alcohol level you had was such that you personally could not handle it and operate a car safely (i.e. someone who never drinks, and gets buzzed because they have no experience with alcohol, and crashes). From .01-.04 it’s prima facia evidence that you were not intoxicated, and it’d be very hard to prove that a person was.

The other law is for prohibited alcohol concentration. It is possible to prove that a professional alcoholic is able to safely operate a motor vehicle even above .08. Therefore his driving is not “impaired.” But if he got stopped by something unrelated to bad driving (i.e. non-registration), it is still possible to convict under this statute, just for having a BAC .08 or above.

Also, we don’t take people to jail for 1st-3rd offenses here if they have someone sober who can pick them up. Which means that in about an hour after getting stopped they can be on their way home if they are cooperative and there are no extenuating circumstances. First offense here is also not a crime, it’s just a traffic ticket (barring a crash involving injury).

Also, in my experience a few beers is usually not enough. When we went to intoximeter training, we got to drink to see what levels we would reach. I had five shots of voka in one hour (full stomach, 155 pounds) and I only hit a high of .06.
