Is it wrong that I only date virgins?

Live your life how YOU want, and just don’t ask others what they feel about it. There are plenty of women out there who are saving themselves. Have fun dating & getting to know the other person . Hope you find the “right one”🙂

I respect your opinion. However, I personally would not want to deal with the emotional baggage my wife may carry from her previous marriage.
As Isaid before if you are living in chastity you have a perfect right to date only chaste girls but as an advice, be careful with thinking that because someone has yet to be married does not have baggage. That is not necessarily the case and as you get older you will find many people with lots of baggage that haven’t been marriage. You must look at the totality of the circumstances. Again you have to focus on chastity and look at the character of the person. There are people who get attached to their past and have never married but that attachment to the past creates a huge baggage on that person. Again just an advice as you gotta be careful on getting to fixated on one thing (physical virginaty) as that can lead you to miss other issues/red flags which if had you looked at the totality of circumstances you would have noticed.

I’ll be honest, the biggest reason that I’m saving it for marriage is because God said to. The way I look at it, since He’s the creature of everything, if He says to do something, then I believe it would be foolish not to listen to Him. Of course I want to find someone who is saving them self because they have morals and they believe sex is more than just a physical act performed for pleasure. I was just listing some more “Earthly” reasons that I want to find a virgin wife.

This is true, but God said we shouldn’t do other things as well. What if the gall had stolen a drink or candy bar from a convenience store when she was in junior high, and has confessed and changed? Or if she had a habit of talked back to her parents in the past?

Sins can be and are forgiven, and people can and do change. And as other posters have pointed out, virginity doesn’t even necessitate chastity (one can be unchaste through thoughts alone.)

As a side note, I think there’s a tenderness here because the implication (even if unintended) of virgins only marrying virgins is that chaste reverts are “only good enough for other non-virgins.” So I think it needs to be said that reverts are not “lesser” folks. 🙂

I am a practicing virgin, and I only date girls who are also saving it. Why? Well, to me anyways, a boyfriend-girlfriend relashionship isn’t just for fun. It’s about finding someone who could be a potential spouse, and then seeing if you two are compatible. Now, I’m not mean to girls who have or have had premarital sex. However, I know that sex isn’t just physical, and there is a list of reasons that I don’t want to date someone who’s had sex before. These reasons include:
  • The person will most likely still have feelings for others that they have slept with
  • There is a chance of catching some sort of STD
  • There will be the fear of not “performing” as well as the person’s previous sexual partners
  • I would never date a girl who was previously married, so why would I date a girl who was previously “spiritually” married through intercourse?
  • The thought of my wife having sex with other men would make me sad
  • The thought of being in my wife, where other men have been, is repulsive
Is this wrong? The way I look at it, they’re just personal preferences. Like how I prefer brunettes to blondes, or how I prefer short girls to tall ones. Like I said, I don’t hate women who are promiscuous, I just don’t think they’re wife material for me.
I see God nowhere there. I only see you are afraid.

people took wrong desision, God said “Forgive our trespasses as we forgive our trespassers” meaning we should forgive others if we want to be forgiven. Saint Francis was certainly not a virgin, yet i doubt you could say he was a bad man.

What if she is a converted Catholic who may have had premarital sex prior to her conversion, but now she has repented for her prior actions and leads a chaste life? What if God called you to her?

I suppose that she will be heartbroken and devastated that the OP will not have her and then spend the rest of her life quietly pining away. 😦

I couldn’t get over the thought of other men having sex with her. I know most people would be able to get past this, but I wouldn’t be able to. I really wish I could, I almost feel abnormal. It seems like everyone else doesn’t care (not on here, just in general). Like, “You had sex with someone before? No big deal.” There have been times where I felt like I should just give up. Like, why should I care about saving it when most others don’t? But then I meet others who feel exactly like me, who have gone through the same thing, who have felt alone and abnormal for their decision to wait. And that makes me feel better.

You know I started out being appalled by this poster’s question “How could he?”

But then I thought and acknowledged that I never dated a smoker and never would have. How different, if at all, are this concepts?

I think you are mixing up the message of my post.

Should one strive for and value virginity and chastity? Absolutely! To a great extent. Saving yourself for marriage should be of the utmost importance as a single person. But people make mistakes due to various reasons- sometimes we lie, cheat, steal, fall from chastity. But since we believe in the forgiving nature of God, we also believe in complete repentance if the person is truly sorry for what they’ve done and vow to avoid that sin in the future.

I hope I don’t seem to presumptuous, and I could always be wrong. But from what I’ve read in this thread it would seem that there are some insecurities within yourself regarding non-virgins. It isn’t about what baggage they have- it seems like it is more about the baggage you have related to their past- like some sort of trust issue with those who have fallen from chastity. Maybe that’s something to ponder and discern?

I apologize if I am completely off base. And you’ve done a very good job remaining a virgin for 20 years. It takes a great deal of strength and zeal to do so.

Would you have tried to ascertain a few dates in whether or not the woman had ever smoked? And if she had in the past and quit, and was committed to living a smoke free life, would you consider her damaged goods for the rest of her life?

The OP never said anything about “damaged goods.” If anything, most of his reasons come down to the fear of comparing unfavorably with those who have gone before him. Relationships with people do not wash out of our memories like “relationships” with cigarettes. Even so, there are many people who would think twice about marrying an alcoholic, even one who had been sober for many years. That is their prerogative, and people who have been in recovery will admit that the danger of a relapse isn’t negligible. Likewise, it is hardly unknown for someone to start longing for a past lover later in their life, even though their present spouse has done them no wrong.

I am not saying that virgins should not consider marrying someone who is not a virgin, only that if they decide not to that it is certainly a defensible decision. There is no double-standard in it, and they ought to be left alone about it.

I would argue that there is quite a difference between the relations that are being made here.

He’s rejecting them because of his own personal insecurities and not because he thinks they are damaged goods. Does that hurt any less than being rejected because you aren’t attractive enough or maybe because you’re the wrong race or religion? People have all sorts of deal breakers for their own personal reasons and it’s their perogative to date who they please.

Exactly. Honestly, I’m very surprised about a lot of the comments I’ve read…again, who you date is your business and you’re within your rights to come up with your own criteria for a future spouse, but my goodness…this just seems unreasonable to me. And keep in mind that this has nothing to do with extramarital sex being acceptable, it has to do with understanding repentance and conversion. Are we saying that you can judge a persons devotion and love of God and commitment to the pursuit of holiness by past actions? Especially actions of youth? Are we gonna start excluding people from out possible “spouse list” because of other sins of their past?

Again, it’s each individual’s business who they pursue…this is just my way of thinking.

It’s not bad to be a virgin and to want to marry a virgin. Your reasons are a bit unkind and fearful though. I’m seeing the words “repulsive” and “baggage” when you are talking about someone not being a virgin. These are people you are talking about.

What about widows or victims of rape? They haven’t done anything wrong. Are they also repulsive? Maybe I’m reading what you said wrong since I can’t see your face or hear your tone.

I do wish you well in finding a wife.

You aren’t serious? The OP is not saying that nobody should marry her. He is being upfront that he would feel insecure with a woman who had previous lovers out there somewhere and probably still somewhere in the back of her mind.

At any rate, no one ought to ever “spend the rest of her life quietly pining away” on account of someone who failed to see her value. Good riddance…he is meant for someone else. Next!!

BTW, Matthew’s geneology of Joseph, spouse of Mary, specifically includes those women who were not married to just one man, some of whom were prostitutes: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Bathsheba. There is no reason for a woman with a “past” that some men don’t feel comfortable with to pine away about it. The only requirement is that we “go, and sin no more” when we fall. That is all that can be done, but since it obviously leaves us in a condition that God can use, that is sufficient.

I wasn’t being serious. I thought it would be obvious but I guess it is harder to communicate than I thought. :o Everybody seems too concerned about the poor girl who’s turned her life around and is now being rejected. I mean, so what? She’ll probably spend all of a minute thinking about it and then move on to someone else. I know I’ve been rejected for far more trivial and embarrassing reasons that not being a virgin.

Well…I guess most practicing Catholic parents would like to hope that they have taught their children the virtues of foregoing sex before marriage…if you believe that God is calling you to remain celibate until you are married then I’m sure there is someone out there for you who has a similar calling…I know you are not being critical of people who are not virgins when they marry…good luck to you and God bless:)
