Is Purgatory in the bible

If I throw a rock and break your window (sin) – then ask your forgiveness (as we do in confession) – you forgive me (as Christians should, and as God does in confession),

But… the broken window still needs to be fixed!
Could it be that what Jesus did on the cross was to “fix the window”?

So all I can do is pray that when you die, it happens immediately after receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation so that you don’t have the opportunity to commit any sins without having the opportunity to confess them before dying.

Say you go to confession on Saturday and receive full absolution. Complete and unconditional. You walk out of there with a totally clean slate. On Monday you have an argument with someone and accidentally take the Lord’s name in vain. On Monday night, you pass away in your sleep. Your soul is not perfectly clean, so you can’t go to Heaven, according to one of the few verses in Revelation which is clear as day. So, where do you go? Hell, or Purgatory? Would you like to reconsider your beliefs about Purgatory now?
Praying for one another is good. But you can’t possibly know what might occur in a person’s heart right at the moment of their passing. Only God knows. He died on the cross to atone for our sins and it is He who determines and judges whose soul is clean enough and Who makes the call as to the depth of His mercy. I would rather trust in faith in the love and mercy of the Savior and leave it at that.

Saying there is still a price to be paid after one confesses is supposition.
In Luke 19:8-9 we read:
8 Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I ** will give** to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I ** will pay back** four times as much.” 9 Then Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham.
At the time that Jesus “spoke the words of absolution” Zacchaeus had not yet given half his possessions to the poor, or paid back anyone he may have defrauded of anything.

Though Scripture is silent on whether or not Zacchaeus made good on his promises, I have to believe that this price still had to be paid.

Unless those verses are not taken literally, I’m not sure how giving to the poor and being willing to give 4x as much and Jesus speaking of salvation proves purgatory. Jesus also spoke elsewhere in the gospels of eternal life for those who give to the poor. He referred to them as righteousness into life everlasting.

Where exactly does Purgatory come from. I have heard that it is not mentioned in the bible, but that it suggest a place where we are cleansed of our sins before we can get to Heaven is. Can somebody tell me where in the bible it can be found? Thank you.
The question seems to presume that if it is not explicitlly in the bible then it is not true. Where in the bible does it say that a Christian teaching or doctrine of Faith has to be in the bible for it to be a true teaching or doctrine of Faith?

“All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven. The Church gives the name purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from punishment of the damned” (CCC 1030-31). . The early Church and early Church Fathers have always taught that purgatory is a true teaching of Christ and his Church. A good book to read is “The Fathers Know Best”, by Jimmy Akn. There is biblical evidence for the teaching of purgatory, although, not necessary. Plenty of biblical evidence has been given in this thread.

If one believes in a God of Love Who Is, among other things, One of Infinite Mercy, than Purgatory takes on an aspect of such Divine Proportions as to be awed by God’s All Encompassing Salvific Plan.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that one “knows” all of the “details” of this “All Encompassing Salvific Plan” but is hopeful in his/her faith and faithful in his/her hope for this Love, Who Is God, to ultimately Encompass ALL in this DIVINE LOVE.

If one believes in a petty, puny, nit-picking God than Purgatory takes on a dimension of pettiness approaching an infinite scale.

I suppose just how one views God determines not just whether one may or may not believe in “Purgatory” but just what one may perceive what and why “Purgatory” Is.

Just believing in (pick a word) doesn’t necessarily say too much about what one believes in since (pick the same word) could and many times mean something vastly different from what someone else means when they say, I believe in ( pick the same word again).

Sorry - to clarify what I meant - You go to Confession; Make an Act of Contrition with a firm purpose of amendment. The Priest gives you a Penance and Absolves you from your sins in the name of God. You do whatever Penance the Priest has given to you, with sincere Faith and gratitude to have received the Sacrament. Your sins are then forgiven. That’s why I cannot understand that the sin hangs over us, only to be cleansed after death in purgatory.
Hi Emily! Long time, no see 😉

Again, I wonder how you can call yourself a Catholic if you do not believe in the Truth of Purgatory, or even seem like you ever heard of it before you came to this thread. An example that is good for me is, if you cut someone, the cut may heal (forgiveness of sins), but the scar from it remains for a while before it disappears. So, too, is Purgatory a means of getting rid of the scars that the sins that God has forgiven have left on our souls.

It is not an unreasonable thing to believe. In fact, it shows even more the Mercy of God, Who established Purgatory as a means of allowing us to be perfected before entering into the Beatific Vision. Read Saint Catherine of Genoa’s Treatise on Purgatory: it is a very good explanation of it. In addition, somewhere in Isaiah, the prophet recounts how an angel placed a hot coal on his tongue before he was admitted into God’s Heavenly Presence (a prefiguring and explanation of Purgatory).

May God bless you and lead you to the Truth! 🙂

While I of course can’t speak for Emily, what you wonder about nonetheless struck me as sort of odd from someone who believes in all Catholic teaching. Because otherwise you would not need to wonder how she can call herself a Catholic. The Church calls her such.

As Fr Grondin explains, “Once baptized Catholic, or received into the Church, that person is always considered a Catholic”.

So I just hope that helps as we all seek truth. God blessings!

Hi Richard,
Of course the concept of purgatory is not unknown to me. It was all part of the “hell fire and brimstone” drummed into me during many years in a Convent Boarding School, where, even as young children, we were regarded as sinners and I can never recall being taught anything about the Love of God. As a result, I totally rejected all aspects of Catholicism well into my adult life.Thank God children are not indoctrinated through fear these days!

Now for several years a practising Catholic, I do not however believe in Purgatory (see many earlier posts in this thread ) and can only respectfully suggest that yet again we must just agree to disagree on this matter.

God bless you 🙂

First to make a point; allow me to be a smart-alic…😃

Purgatory can be found right next to the terms “protestant and bible”

The point is that not every term in use today is actually in the bible; in the form we are seeking it to be. BUT that it no way takes away from their reality.

In order to get a good understanding of the Doctrine of Purgatory one must know a bit more about:
God’s Nature
Divine Justice
God’s amazing desire to save as many souls as possible
The natures of sin & the temporal punishment due to them

Each worthy of an in depth explanation, but impossible because of the wisely limited space.

So here are the passages that affirm the absolute need in Divine Justice for Purgatory:

Rev. 21: 27 “But nothing unclean shall enter it, nor any one who practices abomination or falsehood, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.”

Mt. 5: 26 truly, I say to you, you will never get out till you have paid the last penny.

Matt.5: 48 “You, therefore, must be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

Heb. 2: 10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through suffering.

1John.3: 2 to 3 “Beloved, we are God’s children now; it does not yet appear what we shall be, but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. And every one who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.”

1 Cor. 3: 13-14 “each man’s work will become manifest; for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done if the work which any man has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, [Purgatory] though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.

2nd. Cor. 7:1 “Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the fear of God

Eph. 1: 4-8 “even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. He destined us in love to be his sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace which he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace which he lavished upon us.

Ps18:30 “This God – his way is perfect; the promise of the LORD proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him…

**What is Purgatory:
**
Its a stepping stone on the way to heaven for those who die w/o Mortal sin on their Souls; but who have venial sins and or the TEMPORAL Punishment that ALL sins accrue, and which even when sins are Confessed and Forgiven; remain as a debt that MUST be repaid in order to be made PERFECT, a requirement to enter into heaven.

ALL sins have “public” nature; meaning a effect on the Church, on others and on society in general.

Take for example adultery, swearing in public, theft and gossip. EACH in its own way effects others besides the sinner. This effect is called “The Temporal Punishment” due to sin. ALL sins accrue a similar debt.

Even Confession does NOT remove or repay this debt which MUST be paid to enter in to heaven. the Beatific Vision.

So Purgatory acts kind of like a “Soul-wash”; making a sole perfect to enter into God’s Presence. This debt can be repaid while on earth in a number of ways.

Indulgences [another separate topic]
Good works
Prayers and sacrifices offered up as well as other way’s.

So this is the short story. GREAT querstion:thumbsup:

A clue to where Jesus went immediately after dying on the cross can be found in 1 Peter 3:18-20:

18 “For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, in order that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; 19 in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison, 20 who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water.”

Some theologians believe that during the three days between Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection, He descended into Abraham’s bosom (Luke 16:19-31), proclaiming to them the mystery of the gospel. We know, from Romans 4:25, that redemption is not complete without Jesus being “raised for our justification” – and since Jesus wasn’t raised until Easter Sunday, we know He didn’t go straight to Heaven. Therefore, we can infer that the good thief didn’t go straight to Heaven either, because of Jesus’ promise that “today you will be with Me”

The Apostles Creed says he descended into hell and arose on the third day before ascending into heaven.

Hi Tom,

I’m a bit confused. Your heading say’s you’re a Catholic but the bible verses you share are very much that of an uninformed Protestant. Not that it is a problem for me. Just asking.🙂

What many Protestants do is confuse what Christ COULD HAVE done and what Christ Actually DID Chose to Do.

If God had NOT Created humanity in His Very Image; Gen.1:26-27; with a intellect, mind and freewill, for the precise purpose of being therefore of being ABLE to freely choose Divine Worship; Isaiah 43 verses 7 & 21, then God might have chosen to save everyone; or at least, everyone “who calls on “His Name.” Professes Him as their “God and Personal Savior. Which is a recent Protestant reformation teaching*** from the 13th to 17th Century***; an man made religion and Innovation that actually competes with what God Himself DID choose to teach and do. Mt. 10: 1-8; Mt. 16:15-19; Mt. 18:18; John 17: 11-26, Mk. 16: 14-15. Mt. 28:16-20. ALL of which affirm Christ Choice of One God; with only One [that is all that is possible even for God] Faith, and following his own OT choice of JUST one Chosen People Lev. 18:14 {Tom this site will make looking up the evidence easy: http://drbo.org/

Jn. 3:5 “Jesus answered, and said to him: Amen, amen I say to thee, unless a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God”

Mt. 19:17 “Who said to him: Why asketh thou me concerning good? One is good, God. But if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.”

Mk. 10:15 “Amen I say to you, whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, shall not enter into it.”

Hebrews 5:9 “And being consummated, he became, to all that obey him, the cause of eternal salvation” Mt. 16:18-19 “

Matt. 12: 30 “He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters.

Jesus speaking to Peter “Luke 22:29 “And I dispose to you, as my Father hath disposed to me, a kingdom” READ Jn.21:15–17

Luke 10:16 “He who hears you hears me, and he who rejects you rejects me, and he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.”

Romans 13: 2 “Therefore he who resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.”

John 10: 16 And I have other sheep that are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will heed my voice. So there shall be one flock, one shepherd.

Tom, the keys to Christ Kingdom are given directly and ONLY to the Peter and his successors. Mt. 16:18-19. Heaven , Hell and Purgatory ALL exist as evidence of God’s Mercy and Divine Justice And because we ARE Created with the ability to choose; we then MUST do so for ourselves.

James 2:24 "Do you see that by works a man is justified; and not by faith only"

Rev. 2:23 And I will kill her children with death, and all the churches shall know that I am he that searcheth the reins and hearts, and I will give to every one of you according to your works.👍

God Bless you,
Patrick

Did Jesus go to Heaven on Good Friday?

Answer: No.

Jesus didn’t ascend to Heaven until 40 days after Easter Sunday. On Good Friday He went to the souls in “prison” (those righteous who were waiting for Heaven to be opened).
