Those are just 2 cases. I think they will say “Baloney” to the explanation given above.
It’s just like voodoo; it affects those who believe it in, and has no effect on those that don’t.

I don’t believe that stretching causes possession, hence after 30 year it has no effect on me. Others have never practiced it, are scared to death of it, and hence have set themselves up for possession, not just from “yoga,” but everything else they are superstitious about.

The majority of the Catholics would never engage in either Yoga or Ouija boards. They simply avoid this stuff. It is like what parents tell their children “When you see trouble go the other way” with this exception: they pray for all of their fallen brethren.
In other words, you advocate blind religious obedience and flying in the face of the Pope’s declaration that we are the Religion of the Logos. (In addition, patronizing and demonizing your opposition on the side.)

Ever notice before any important religious season or feast day, threads become reservoirs of anti-Christian sentiment. The goal is to disturb the Peace and distract from Christ.

Disagreement with your opinion does not constitute “anti-Christian sentiment.”

Anyone whose faith is troubled by yoga of course should not practice it. But telling people who do practice it that they are somehow less Catholic, or stupid, or putting themselves in danger of possession, is arrogant, unjust, and uncharitable.

For those who say that any yoga position is dangerous, I leave you with the yoga pose called Anjali Mudra. Definition:the palms of the hands are brought together in front of the heart. Sound familiar?

Yea, it is called “Faith” and is a virtue we should all strive to obtain. Faith work hand and hand with obedience, a discipline.

Agnes Therese "Disagreement with your opinion does not constitute “anti-Christian sentiment.”

Yes that is a true statement if I was just not directly quoting Cardinal Ratzinger, Father Amorth & other Cardinals, Bishops & priests. What spirit fills people with pride and drives them to ignore, with flippant rebellious attitude, the warnings of members of the Vatican curia? Surely not the Spirit of Christ!

And by the same token those who proclaim that they have been practicing Yoga with no ill effects that is just their opinion also. Actually it is personal observations we are reporting.

Dear Richard, if you read that article "What the Church has to say about Yoga" or some similar title everyone agrees physical exercise is good all the way around. Except Cardinal Ratzinger and others worry about the exposure to Hindu ideology.

Actually, I do have tendency to believe differently that what the Vatican says; but, that isn't especially a good circumstancem. We never have gotten into theologically what bothers these Catholic theologians specifically.

I don't feel like addressing this during Advent. I have a lot of things to do that are more pressing and urgent. So I am leaving the forum until after the feast of the Epiphany.

Once again, you statements are in the context of “yoga = spirituality.” And, once again, the “yoga” of the west often refers to various forms of exercise, not spirituality. That’s not personal opinion, that’s fact.

Has the Vatican commented on the spiritual practice of Yoga? Sure; it’s not allowed.

Has the Vatican stated that one may not stretch or exercise? Of course not.

Don’t confuse the two.

Yoga is not demonic…

Read the Catechism of the Catholic Church (839-848); particularly section 843 where it states as follows:

843 The Catholic Church recognizes in other religions that search, among shadows and images, for the God who is unknown yet near since he gives life and breath and all things and wants all men to be saved. Thus, the Church considers all goodness and truth found in these religions as “a preparation for the Gospel and given by him who enlightens all men that they may at length have life.”

Don’t buy in to those who seek to divide rather than unite… there is nothing intrinsically wrong with yoga… in fact, act itself has nothing but positive side effects for the practicer… one note, if you’re Catholic, don’t pray to the Hindu god…

Case closed…

Now can we focus our attention on more pressing issues?

I’ve done yoga for years, it didn’t make me Hindu, didn’t make me want to join a cult, and I didn’t get possessed. What it did do is make me stronger (physically), and helped a great deal with my depression, not because of some supposed “spiritual” benefits of it, but for the reasons scientists who study that kind of thing have discovered. It’s very simple, deep breathing makes you more relaxed, working your muscles release endorphins which you make you feel happy for short time. At some point, this could have been attributed to some kind of “spiritual” thing, but that was before we knew about how simple body chemistry works.

Personally I do not think yoga is demonic. Thomas Merton was a student of Zen Meditation and the Orthodox Jews believe in reincarnation in their mystical book" Kabbalah"

This is another one of the major points that need to be looked at. Would it be wrong to say, “thank you God for this grace that you give me,” during or shortly after the yoga session? In Jesus Christ The Bearer Of The Water Of Life there is mention that this “good feeling” should not be confused with the presence of God. I personally can easily see how the enemy would use this “good feeling” to confuse us with God; or in the case of “spiritual yoga,” the inner divine that is connected to brahman (the universal spirit).

Just tried to find where it says this in the document, and could not find it.

Hello.

I have been doing kundalini yoga & meditation for a while now. I am of the type that I am always thirsty for spirituality. The “raising” of the Kundalini force in my spine was at first a very powerful experience but has since it happened offered me the ability to have contact with the transcendent through meditations etc. Not to mention the purifying effect it has on morals & addictions. Kundalini is the same thing as “Chi” in China and The Holy Spirit in the west. It is a universal spirit & there is nothing inherently wrong or “demonic” withit, however it is not to be taken lightly as it is an all-consuming thing that will change ones life forever. Yoga is essentially bodily techniques for one to harmonize this constant energy within us (btw, Kundalini/Holy Spirit flows through all at all times, but to a much lesser extent before its arousal). This energy is also connected to the sexual energy within us and the reason so many monastic & priestly disciplines demand celibacy. Many christians assume anything that is not spelled out in a literal sense in the bible is demonic, when its not. I am absolutely convinced that the purpose of christianity is to incarnate the Christ within us, which is a kind of cosmic consioussness

I dont know, whats wrong with just calling it stretching? Yoga implies spirituality.
Not really. There are specific poses in yoga just as there are specific postions in Pilates. Some are pretty basic stretches but others are unique to a particular approach to stretching.

I am a formal Reiki Master Teacher, did yoga and other modality … After praying and asking Mother Mary to guide me with my wrong doing, it didn’t take much time that i got ride of anything to do with new age. I had to pray to have remorse because i couldn’t see the wrong in that. After going to the confession and the priest prayed for me, all of my ability vanished. If this would have been from God, it wouldn’t have been affected.

Kudalini use a serpent energy. Are you sure, you want that in you? It is very dangerous to get caught up in yoga or any new age modality and thinking you are working for God, since this is about love but i can assure, you aren’t serving God at all. You may think you are helping others but you are helping them to lose their soul instead.

New age tendency is to discredit the bible, certainly the Catholic church, discredit the desire to be humble, discredit charity because of all this manifestation and abundance craziness etc… I can name you many other flaws.

Anything that isn’t taught by Jesus, stay away from it. When human will be ready to learn more, Jesus will do so, but until then, our task is to do God’s will and follow Jesus’s teaching without forgetting the Blessed Virgin Mary. We do this with staying close to the Catholic church and her sacrements, charity, being humble and keep desiring to do God’s will while loving him with all of our heart and loving others.

New age is seeking for external power and it worshiping another God that you like it or not, i didn’t think i was but trust me, i was without realizing this. Only grieve and deep regrets come from this, the thought of all the soul that i misguided is unbearable but thankfully, i know that i can pray for them now and you bet i do.

Anyway, don’t get involve with yoga.

I would pray simply Mother Mary if i was you and ask for guidance, clarity and protection. Pray to have remorse once you suspect what you do isn’t Jesus’s teaching, then go to the confession.

Beside praying everyday, i recommend to simply go in nature and go for a nice walk. Doing nice thing for others bring also peace and joy within.

Ditch the yoga or anything new age period. Go back to read the bible

All the best!

If it lets me shoot serpent-shaped energy blasts and ensnare my opponents in mystical green binds, why not? That’d be some martial arts class! q:

Thanks for all of your insights…I’m going to go with what the Priest and Cardinal say on the subject.

Yoga goes beyond Religion, Says Catholic Priest

November 06, 2012: A Catholic priest in Agra, whose book on yoga was recently released, said that the exercise goes beyond religion and is “truly universal.” Archbishop Albert D’Souza of Agra released Fr. John Ferreira’s latest book Health, Wealth and Happiness Through Yoga at St. Peter’s College in the city. “The book is a primer, aimed at popularizing the intricate knowledge of the esoteric science of yoga, which goes beyond religion and is truly universal,” Fr. Ferreira said.

He said that modern society, with its cup overflowing with stresses and a whole string of mental and physical ailments, stands in dire need of India’s knowledge of yoga. "Integrating yoga into the school curriculum will provide a holistic approach to education as a science that not only prepares a student for life, but supports the art of living well.

“Joyful living, drawn from the depths of one’s own life rhythm, according to the goal set by the Creator, is the foundation of health, wealth and happiness,” he added. In his message, which was read at the event, Cardinal Oswald Gracias said that through the prescribed postures and exercises, one’s all-around sense of well-being improves, allowing one to enter into himself so as to commune better with god.

Fr. Ferreira said that he has been a follower of many yoga gurus and did extensive research to produce the book. The book also includes views of Christian priests who have approved his yoga experiments. “This is significant since it is still regarded by many as basically a Hindu system,” he said.
