How did we turn a Bible Study on the gospel of John chapters 1, 2, and 3 into a discussion on baptismal regeneration? Have we discussed the conversation with Jesus and good old Nick yet?
We got to Chap. 3, where Jesus was teaching Nicodemus about baptismal regeneration! šŸ‘

What makes The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Protestants and not the Orthodox Church?
I don’t think that Mormons can be considered Christian. They dont’ hold to Christian doctrine. They don’t believe Jesus is God.

That’s the issue. The new birth is regeneration and a new heart given to love God. The new birth changes our inclination from rebelllion and enmity to God, to love and worship of God because we receive a new nature and a new heart to love God. We are all born into this world loving darkness and hating God because of our sinful nature. We are spirituality blind unable to see Jesus as He is. Within regeneration and new birth, God grants us a new heart or new spirtual eyes to enable us to see Jesus as He is in degrees.
This is what we believe happens in baptism, and more.

I too love the gospel of John. Comment on anything that you want to share with us. I sincerely believe that we all know in part and the Spirit illuminates truth to us for our transformation and God’s glory. I am very interested to hear from you. I read your personal information and I am curious how you went from Roman Catholic to Protestant at 18 and back to Roman Catholicism at 58. šŸ˜‰
Actually, I left Catholicism at 18 and did not return to Christianity until I saw The Passion of The Christ in '04. Prior to that time I had to face fears of not being good enough by going into the Air Force and being influenced by friends to attend college when I got out. I came from a coal mining family and the middle class was off limits. I did not think I was smart enough to go to college.
Anyway, got a degree in psych and after 2 yrs of work got married and she challenged me to get a master’s. Got that and began working with those who were diagnosed with severe mental illness. Very difficult time with their suffering. Now I see who they are. Back then I did not. They are the canaries in the coalmine. They experience the sins of others more intensely than those of us more defended. They have the sensitivity of saints but have never been taught the nature that God had given them.
Consequently, they go into hiding. I am now working with God to give them a new understanding of who they are and the truth that they reveal to us about our sins and the harm that we do others.
God awakened me one night around Christmas of '04 after I had awakened two previous times from a dream that placed me in a dead world with dead people who did look like zombies. I never had this dream before nor did I continue dreams after awakening and returning to sleep.
The 3rd time I awakended I looked up and I saw a Light that was bright and luminous. It did not hurt my eyes. Then a voice that was neither female nor male told me ā€œI love you.ā€ I cried and returned to sleep.
In '04 I saw a woman who had terminal liver cancer. She was supposed to die Oct of 03 but she did not. She stated she wanted to live for her son’s wedding in Oct. After that she had nothing left to live for. Her hands started bleeding 11/04. I was treating her for depression and she could not take meds. Her hands started to bleed more often. She had left Catholicism 20 yrs earlier. I asked her to ask God in my office what the purpose was for her bleeding hands. 30 seconds after the question she was told to read Rm 8 and also that we were not to know why at that time.
So her depression lifted in 2/04 and it was then that I saw her hands bleed during our last meeting. June of 04 she returned a book and she was gray and wearing a heart monitor. Extreme pain and could barely stand. I asked her if her hands were still bleeding and she said yes. I asked her to place her hands on her abdomen the next time they bled and she reluctantly said yes. I did not know why I asked her.
She called 2 days later and said her hands bled profusely the day before during a hospital visit to stop her treatment because it was not working. She said she bled all over herself. They did an MRI and found only a scar on her liver.
I made my first confession Easter vigil of 05 and the next day my first Communion in 40 years.
I had not seen her since June of 04 when she was cured and vibrant after looking like death. I stopped to say hello following a back surgery she had 11/05. She told me that her hands had stopped bleeding a while back. When I told her about my confession and communion that Easter she cried and said that was when her hands stopped bleeding. I will stop for now.

People who have been separated from the Apostolic Tradition. Once that happens, all kinds of strange doctrines emerge. I had one protestant on here tell me that baptism had nothing to do with water!
I think they were probably referring to Matthew 3:11?

However, if you Google some of the practices among Catholics in certain third world countries that are endorsed by your church, such as blending voodoo, witchcraft, magic, and other dark arts (explicitly defined as aberrant by God Himself in the OT) with Christianity you might not be so quick to judge the poster who made that statement?

Don’t get me wrong, baptism is important (but I see where that poster derived his or her idea from). The fact is baptism is an outward confession of faith, it is not in itself an efficacious means of grace devoid of faith. So there is some level of disagreement over this issue between Catholics and Protestants, although the poster you mentioned seems outside of the mainstream protestant view.

ā€œOkay, le’t stay here for awhile. How do you get baptismal regeneration in context with John 3-16 to 20? We all know that the chapters and verses are not inspired, right?ā€ - Mister Z

John 3

You Must Be Born Again
3:1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus [1] by night and said to him, ā€œRabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.ā€ 3 Jesus answered him, ā€œTruly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again [2] he cannot see the kingdom of God.ā€ 4 Nicodemus said to him, ā€œHow can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?ā€ 5 Jesus answered, ā€œTruly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. [3] 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ā€˜You [4] must be born again.’ 8 The wind [5] blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.ā€

9 Nicodemus said to him, ā€œHow can these things be?ā€ 10 Jesus answered him, ā€œAre you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? 11 Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you [6] do not receive our testimony. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. [7] 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. [8]

For God So Loved the World
16 ā€œFor God so loved the world, [9] that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.ā€
I am curious why you stopped at verse 21?

22: ā€œAfter these things, Jesus and his disciples came into the land of Judea: and there he abode with them and baptized.ā€

If Jesus baptized then that must say something of its spiritual value of regeneration considering what he had said earlier; that by baptizing he was fulfilling what he had said to Nicodemus. Is not the Gospel of John full of foreshadowing that leads to fruition later in the Gospel?

Well at least that much we agree on! 😃

So why do you call them ā€œMormon Christiansā€ when you don’t believe they are?
Mormons consider themselves Christians. I knew many Mormons in southern California through the community. I coached my sons’ Little League teams with many Mormon families. I even worked as a Real Estate Aprasier with a Mormon employer and an all Mormon office. Mormon Christians need the gospel of God’s grace and the bibilical Jesus Christ too.

If we consider all Christians who are not in full communion with the Roman Church to be Protestants, then Orthodox Christians are protestants too.
The Orthodox are NOT Protestants. They are schismatic. The difference is not subtle.
I think we should let Anglicans, Lutherans and Church of Christ believers on this site to speak for themselves.
Why? Whether one is Protestant or not is not a matter of subjective judgment. Rejection of Apostolic Succession and reliance on the ā€œsolasā€ makes you a Protestant, whether you think you are or not. Anglicans of the high end make a very good case for the catholic substance of Anglicanism, while those on the other end break out in bumps at the very thought.
Church of Christ like Mormons both believe in baptismal regeneration, restoration theology and reject being protestants and both reject jusification by faith alone along-side with Catholics.
And that does not make them Catholic. Mormons, for pete’s sake, can’t even qualify as Christians because of their bizarre doctrine of God.

I’m glad that you decided to join us in a Bible Study. I could use some help hereā€¦šŸ™‚ šŸ™‚ šŸ™‚ . There are many on this site with the same undestanding on the essentials of the Faith as me. There is unity of the faith after-all. Therefore, what Sola Scriptura post goes for me as well. Same with Sandusky… you know that other Calvinist on here. I even agree with Triuniunity, but he disappeared…maybe he got raptured…LOL?

I love my LDS brothers and sisters, but I do not believe that their religious views begin to approximate the truth found in Christianity. …
I believe the Mormon gospel and Mormon Jesus to be false and is from the spirit of the anti-Christ. I would never call a Mormon Christian my brother and sisters in Christ for their sake.
Please note that I did not call them ā€œbrothers and sisters in Christ.ā€

When was the last time you shared the biblical Christ with a Mormon missionary or a religous debate site filled with Mormon Christians? They need Christ and the gospel too.

I don’t know what you’re googling, but the Catholic Church does not endorse the blending of voodoo, witchcraft, magic etc into the faith. That is simply untrue.

Okay, in what sense are they your brothers and sisters, maybe in Adam…LOL!!!
Every human being has innate value and has been created in the image and likeness of God. Human dignity is extended to all whether they are regenerated or unregenerated. It is for this reason that God so loved the world that He sent His only son to redeem it.

Who am I to consider a member of the LDS Church to be something less than human?

We are all united to Adam before we become united to the 2nd Adam (Christ). - Romans 5

And even after being united to Christ we still have our heritage from Adam and Eve as the parents of the human family. Our regeneration does not negate our humanity. Instead, it changes our relationship with God and gives us access to His love and grace so as to know, love, and serve Him in this life and the next.

And even after being united to Christ we still have our heritage from Adam and Eve as the parents of the human family.
well said. We still reside in bodies that will perish, which is a consequence of the fall. Not only that but until death we must suffer through the lusts of the flesh, pain, hurt, anger, and even occasional despair. All we have is our comfort in Christ.

Does the Orthodox Church submit to the Catholic Magesterium? Does the Orthodox Church claim to be the ā€œOne True Churchā€? The Church of Christ and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints deny being Protestants along-side with the Orthodox Chruch. What makes The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Protestants and not the Orthodox Church?
Your goal here is to converse in a charitable group Bible study. Yet you continue to veer off the path. Now you are interested in the Orthodox Church. Start a thread. I will be your number one contributor. Otherwise, please try to stay on track.

When was the last time you shared the biblical Christ with a Mormon missionary or a religous debate site filled with Mormon Christians? They need Christ and the gospel too.
Just a couple of months ago. When the two missionaries came into my home, I gave them water (no tea, cola, coffee, y’know) and invited them to take off their coats and sit in my kitchen while I finished the cooking for a small dinner party. They gave me the spiel, and asked me what I thought of it, and I told them that it seemed to me to be the ā€œdifferent gospelā€ that Paul warned us about. I affirmed them in their sincerity and conviction and urged them to ā€œread the Bible for all it’s worthā€ (as ā€œthe Bible Answer Manā€, Hank Hanegraaf, likes to say) in order to know a Jesus, who promises and delivers much more than the Jesus of Mormonism even attempts. I gave them a sound-byte history of the early Church, including the problem with the great Apostasy vis a vis the canon of Scripture: they believe the Bible is ā€œtrue,ā€ but since it wasn’t codified until nearly 400 A.D. – long after the supposed apostasy – it poses a severe historical problem. How can they accept a Bible from an apostate Church?

I hope they come back but I doubt that they will. By the way – they were two beautiful young women under 30 doing a missionary year, just like the guys. Ya gotta admire that!

BTW, I have full blown temple-Mormon relatives by the name of Smith. Their forebears were in the trek.

Now: back to the Gospel of John and the Person of Jesus Christ.
