[16] For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

Can’t we just have a mutual appreciation for this verse in common Christian unity? 🙂
Every year our church has a mission festival where we bring all our missionaries back from around the world and one of the things we do is recite this verse in every tongue…It’s a moving moment in regards to; every tribe every tongue and every nation!🙂

That’s outstanding! 😃

It reminds me of the Gideon Bible that you see in all the hotel rooms. In the front of all the hotel room Gideon bibles you will find John 3:16 translated into many different languages. 👍 I’ve always found it interesting to look at those pages.

That makes me think of this. This is a page from Gideon’s Bible index (not the Gideon’s bible but it’s a great list from a AoG Church 😃 ). It lists scriptures people can look up that deal with various topics such as when you’re afraid, worried, weary…etc. Its a great page to browse through. There are many great scriptures to look up.

John 3:16 in many languages. A great idea. :newidea:

John 3:16

[16] For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
I like these related passages.

Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God; everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God. Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love. In this way the love of God was revealed to us: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might have life through him. In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also must love one another. No one has ever seen God. Yet, if we love one another, God remains in us, and his love is brought to perfection in us. (1 John 4:7-12)

Me too. 👍

Here is another one.

And his commandment is this: we should believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another just as he commanded us. Those who keep his commandments remain in him, and he in them, and the way we know that he remains in us is from the Spirit that he gave us. (1 John 3:23-24)

The more I read, the more this whole book relates to John 3:16. Especially 1 John Chapter 5

To me it seems like John 3:16 is the hub that the rest of the bible rotates around. 🙂

Here’s another goodie:

John 20:23
If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven."

Here Jesus was talking to just eleven men and NOT to a large crowd on a hillside. He’s giving these men the authority to FORGIVE SINS or RETAIN SINS – not something that is accomplished by merely preaching the gospel.

Additionally, it seems that these guys would have to HEAR someone confess a sin in order to be able to decide whether to forgive that person or not.

I love that one! 😛

Notice that was pre-atonement 😉

John 3:16 actually tells us what God sent Christ into the world for.

[16] For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

You do know that we Presbyterians hold to the Apostles and Nicene Creed as well as our confessions and catechisms right? We’re reformed Catholics. Actually all christians are catholic if you use that word as universal. There is indeed only one church and you and I are both a part of it.

I’m very happy that through God working through christians in the catholic church we have the scriptures in hand today!

But, I’d be a lot happier if we would focus on the greatness of God as revealed to us in John 3:16 though. 😃
I do know that Presbyterians, like all Protestants have done grave damage to the unity that Christ asked for. It is not reformed by any sense, but deformed.

The entire Scriptures were written in the context of the Catholic Church adn that’s the only context in which Scriptures have correct meaning. Presbyterians didn’t exist then, and much later their church was made by a men, none of these persons also have two natures of which one is God.

The greatness of John 3:16 and all the Scriptures really shine brightest in the context of the RCC. All other contexts are more dim and some just dark.

This is an interesting passage indeed. The gospel truth which is recorded in scripture from the witness of the apostles is that very truth that the church is upholding! This is the truth that all the various denominations in the one Universal Church have in common. We are apostolic because we follow the teachings of the apostles as recorded in scripture and we are the pillar and buttress upholding the truth which is the gospel of Jesus Christ. This gospel is very well summarized in out topic verse John 3:16.

[16] For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Your comments on this just really don’t hold water, unless one wants to blaspheme. For anyone unfortunate enough to believe what you have promoted, you have to believe that God leads the churches into error.

The Apostles were all in the one Church which is Catholic, not simply catholic. They wrote as Catholics, to Catholics, and the entire context of the Bible is to be understood withing the context of Catholicism. Anything else is false context.

…There is indeed only one church and you and I are both a part of it…
No. You’re not a formal member of the Church. You’re separated, not adhering to Christ’s full doctrine. Separated churches have created their own false doctrines.

The only proper context of any of the Scriptures, including John, is in the context of Roman Catholicism. This is the one and only Church started by Christ, and the only proper context for Scriptures written by Catholics as in the specific Church (not simply catholics as in worldwide). Otherwise, people take Scriptures out of context and mislead themselves and others. Presbyterians and others simply distort what was brought to the world through what is the RCC.

This reminds the faithful, that God sent His Son to the world for a mission, and Christ established His one Catholic Church (formal name given) to continue that mission. Others hijacked this for their own purposes, having no valid authority from Christ to interpret nor to minister the Sacraments. Those who are in communion with the deceiver, will try to tell others differently.

MDK,

You seem like you want to do nothing but insult me and other Christians who do not call themselves Roman Catholics.

I wish you wouldn’t.

Thanks,

David 🙂

This occurs after Christ has risen from the dead. Randy is correct in the context in which this was taught and meant.

John 20:21-23 - He said therefore to them again: Peace be to you. As the Father hath sent me, I also send you. When he had said this, he breathed on them; and he said to them: Receive ye the Holy Ghost. Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained.
From DRB, “Whose sins”… See here the commission, stamped by the broad seal of heaven, by virtue of which the pastors of Christ’s church absolve repenting sinners upon their confession.

It’s obvious even to the literalist interpreter that Christ before ascending to Heaven is sending His Apostles out in His name, to continue the mission and giving them authority. He also gave the Apostles the Holy Spirit for this mission on which Christ was sending them. It’s nowhere recorded that Christ walked into a town square to give everyone this authority.

DD,
The explanation you’ve attempted is once again devoid of real meaning. It’s just another one of false views from those who don’t know Christ very well.

Nicely done, Randy. You know the correct context of the Scriptures.

Right. I should have said pre-ascention/ pre-pentacost instead of that. The atonement is complete at this time. I used the wrong word. I apologize. 🙂

He simply gave them the authority to pronounce the forgiveness of God at that time. He gave them the Holy Spirit first. The Holy Spirit decended on the Church at Pentacost when the Church was actually founded. In no way does this imply that any powers was passed to any others by them.

But once again you are trying to take a simple thread and drive it off topic.

The topic is John 3:16.

I wish you would stay on it. 🙂

MDK,

Once again. It seems you have nothing but ill will for non-Roman Catholic Christians. Please stay on the topic of John 3:16. I do not understand why a simple posting of an inspiring verse like John 3:16 compells you to feel the need to attempt to destroy the faith of others.

We are all Christians. John 3:16 glorifies God.

[16] For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

🙂

Peace.

There is a time and place for everything, and a proper spirit to conduct everything in.

Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him.

John 3:36

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
