Notice that was pre-atonement šŸ˜‰

John 3:16 actually tells us what God sent Christ into the world for.

[16] For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Oh, my mistake…

I thought John 20:23 occurred after the resurrection recorded in John 20:1-18.

Right. I should have said pre-ascention/ pre-pentacost instead of that. The atonement is complete at this time. I used the wrong word. I apologize. šŸ™‚
Apology accepted.
He simply gave them the authority to pronounce the forgiveness of God at that time.
Actually, he gave them the authority to forgive sins. Read the text carefully. There’s nothing about ā€œpronouncingā€ anything in the verse. Additionally, what does it mean to ā€œretainā€ or ā€œnot forgive sinsā€? Does this mean that the disciples did not preach the gospel to some people or in some towns? After all what is the logical opposite of ā€œpronouncingā€ā€¦ā€œnot pronouncingā€, right? I get it now…So, when they exercised their ability to ā€œnot forgiveā€ they simply chose not to preach or pronounce. Just one question: If the Apostles decided to ā€œforgive sinsā€ by pronouncing God’s forgiveness and to ā€œretain sinsā€ by not pronouncing, wouldn’t the latter be in disobedience to the Great Commission?
He gave them the Holy Spirit first. The Holy Spirit decended on the Church at Pentacost when the Church was actually founded. In no way does this imply that any powers was passed to any others by them.
What you have written surely doesn’t.

However, what the sacred authors wrote does. For example:

2 Timothy 2:1-2

You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.

There are five generations of believers contained in this one passage: 1. Those who came before Paul and instructed him, 2. Paul himself, 3. Timothy, who was Paul’s disciple, 4. Those whom Timothy would disciple, and 5. Those to whom Timothy’s disciples would preach.

Titus 1:5

The reason I left you in Crete was that you might straighten out what was left unfinished and appoint elders in every town, as I directed you.

Apostolic Succession is illustrated here as Paul had appointed Titus and left him in charge of appointing elders in the Cretan church.
But once again you are trying to take a simple thread and drive it off topic.

The topic is John 3:16.

I wish you would stay on it. šŸ™‚
So far, there hasn’t been much topic to stay on. I posted some thoughts from author Steve Ray above, but you ignored those.

Do YOU have any thoughts on John 3:16 other than posting it over and over and over?

There is a lot of bickering going on here. Let us not forget the 2nd greatest commandment to love our neighbor. I will love my Presbyterian neighbors as much as my Catholic brethren. We don’t have to agree with each other to be respectful.

Mark 12:28-31

And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, ā€œWhich commandment is the first of all?ā€ Jesus answered, ā€œThe first is, ā€˜Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one; and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this, ā€˜You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.ā€

Those verse are nice to reflect on!

Sure. I think it is an amazing thought to know that God would sacrifice so much for us so that we can live.

He didn’t have to do any of this or go to any trouble. But, He did and it was an enormous sacrifice. I think that is a very comforting thought, to think if God would do that how happy he must be when we repent of our sins and ask for his forgiveness.

When I went to my first confession the Priest told me that ā€œtoday there is great rejoicing in heavenā€, words that I found great comfort in. This verse John 3:16 encompases how wonderful and safe life is with God in control. He will make sure we arrive safely home if we want to be there. God did this because it pleases him to give us life. šŸ™‚ We are safe in his care.

Great stuff. I like what the priest told you at your first confession.

Just out of curiosity, when was your last confession to a priest?

DD,
This is often called The Little Gospel."
One of my favorite scriptures.😃
Having a personal relationship with Jesus means we are prayed up and receiving the Eucharist after confessing our sins. Confessing daily, receiving weekly.

God bless,

😃 Thanks Jean. I agree. Putting aside sins and taking communion as often as possible is a great thing and will certainly lead to the closest walk with the Lord one could have in the body.

I agree with you. This is one of my favorite as well. The Little Gospel! I like it. I have heard that somewhere but I can’t place it. šŸ™‚

Thanks! Those are great to reflect on.

Hey, Welcome to CA! I see you’re new. Nice post. I hope to see you around more often. There are a lot of good people here and a lot of interesting topics.

note of advice — (Just don’t talk politics if you’re a democrat. 😃 )
kidding!..well, not really. It’s safer if you don’t.

Anyway I wanted to welcome you and thank you for the post. I of course don’t want to get off the topic of John 3:16 😃

I nominate Jean for the cool thought award. šŸ‘

DD,
I haven’t found that there is a lot of bickering going on? Is it me?
If there is, I guess I put it aside and quote a scripture instead of bickering. The Lord is my Pilot. šŸ™‚

God bless,

That is a beautiful verse, but there we must read everything Jesus said to understand fully our path to heaven.

The Bible teaches we cannot be saved by good works, and the Bible also clearly teaches we cannot be saved without good works. When you read everything we need faith, good works, and love.

James 2:14-26 (New American Standard Bible)

Faith and Works

14What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him?
15If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food,
16and one of you says to them, ā€œGo in peace, be warmed and be filled,ā€ and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that?
**17Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself. ** 18But someone may well say, ā€œYou have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.ā€
We believe that salvation is by grace through faith and not of works.

You’re right.

With the Lord as your Pilot you will certainly land safely šŸ™‚

Thanks,

David šŸ™‚

James 2:24
You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone.

James 2:24
You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone.
Ephesians 2:8-9

[8] For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God –
[9] not because of works, lest any man should boast.

Works are a product of faith which is a product of grace. We will be judged. Everyone will be jusged by the things they have done. However salvation is only by the grace of God. A human has no power to be holy on his own.

That’s why John 3:16 is so amazing. It tells us of the things that God has done for us so that we can be saved. šŸ™‚
