Such attitudes (although we do not know in this case) are often used to cover the use of contraception or worse. I see the middle child “argument” as rationalization of such behavior, and little else. Was there any love at all in their words? What they are actually asking for is prayer. Words fail us in dealing with others, but they will find it much more difficult to resist the Holy Spirit.
I’m not so sure of the contraception argument. Maybe its because they would love more kids, their partner won’t wear it - or they don’t have one, and they are trying to compensate by rationalizing. In addition, people today are like this about EVERYTHING - not just having kids. If you get a new car someone tells you they would not want that kind of car. If you go on holiday someone tells you they would not want to go there. I’m currently at uni as a mature student. Guess what some people are telling me? ‘I don’t envy you I wouldn’t want to all that studying’, ‘What are you going to do with your degree? There are no jobs,’ ‘It’s unlikely you’ll get a good job out of it because of your age.’

However, you may have hit the nail on the head when you say was there no love in their world? If you were happy in yourself, would you care how many kids other people wanted?

Yeah, there was no graceful way to answer that question other than “of course!” I thought about being cute and saying, “Why, do you want him?” but then I thought the better of it.
You could have, ‘Well, I have to have a baby. I don’t have enough room for a pony.’ 😃

You sure know some negative people. On the other hand, there’s a difference between saying, “I could never handle three kids at once.” and “You shouldn’t have three kids! It’s totally irresponsible because you can’t love the midde one!” Their both negative attitudes, but at least the first one doesn’t cross the line into making judgements about other people’s lives.

:tiphat: I have to say hats off to you. You handled things great! 👍
It is hard at times to come up against people like that. God bless you. :hug3:

I was only surmising, but in the States, contraception is rampant. Don’t ask me how I know this. 😦 As it is with misery, sin loves nothing so much as company.

Maybe because it’s the ‘in’ thing - like getting your toes made smaller, boob jobs, eye surgery, botox, debt, bankruptcy, divorce and IKEA furniture.

Just a thought.

There were 6 in my father’s family. I wonder which one was the ‘middle’ one and how many of them were not loved?

My father was one of six children as well and my paternal grandparents loved them all equally.

Getting your toes made smaller? Really?

Indeed. They cut a piece of bone from your big toe to make it smaller so your feet look nicer in sandals.

That’s not the worst - have you seen the girl who spent thousands on plastic surgery to make her look like a barbie doll? Among other things she had ribs removed to give her an 18 inch waist. The problems she will have in later life!

I’m glad (and of course not surprised) to hear that I am not alone in believing this is not acceptable behavior. 🙂 Thanks for letting me rant and even get a chuckle out of it. Our God is so incredibly good, and gifts us in many ways. Children are a wonderful, precious, frustrating and rewarding gift!

OK, so maybe this is just me being snarky, but the first thing that popped in my head was that both of those rude women must have been middle children themselves. 😉 Maybe they’ve rationalized that their lives weren’t perfect because of it, so they’ve decided to spare others the horror of having to be the unloved middle child.

At any rate, you handled it quite well… and I hope you find some good Christian moms to hang out with!

I saw a show about the “Real-Life Barbie” a few years ago. Ken, too? Incredible.

I hesitated to open this thread because I didn’t want to read depressing negative comments, but instead I found myself* laughing* at what those strangers at the park reportely said.:rotfl: Really? I can’t love my middle children??? Why didn’t someone tell me this earlier??? And here I’ve been loving my middle children since before they were born. :doh2:

When I had just one and was pregnant with #2, I remember wondering how I’d be able to love the new baby as much as I loved my first. Now I know. Ophelia, if you are the least bit worried that you won’t be able to love your new baby and any subsequent babies, don’t worry about it. You’ll love 'em.

I love many of the response on this thread because they made me laugh too.
Boy, have they drunk the Kool-Aid.
I think I would just start LAUGHING at those types of statements and responding “You’ve GOT to be kidding me!!!”…

Don’t go sit and sulk (not accusing you, just suggesting for the future!) - go be JOYFUL and share your JOY… go laugh with your kids on the playground and let your love be contagious! 😃

Hi friends! This is really just a vent to get it off my chest. I am noticeably pregnant right now and I have a three year old also. We were at the park today, as were a few other moms that I have never met before. I always get hopeful when I see moms with kids around the same age as mine because I am interested in having more friendships! Anyhow, one of the women pointed to my tummy and asked, “how many have you got?” I put my hand on my belly and said she is my second child. The mom laughed and said “stop there! Don’t have any more!” I laughed too, and said something to the effect of “I don’t know, we want a pretty big family! We are open to what comes!” The tone of the conversation quickly changed from there, though. She went on in a very serious tone to explain to me how a parent can’t love any middle children as much as they love their first and their last, and that it is irresponsible to have more than two for that reason. The other mom at the park was agreeing with her, and encouraging me to get my tubes tied after this baby. I had never met these women before! I remained friendly in my manner and tone, but also held my ground that I intend to be open to any children I am given. Without even walking away, the women literally turned their backs on me and continued to talk among each other that I am selfish, that my poor kids won’t be loved, that I didn’t know what I was talking about… it was amazing how little tact they had. I was floored. But, I let my little one continue to play and I sat at my own bench where I very discretely prayed my pocket rosary for them. I know I handled the situation right, but I keep finding myself thinking of those two mothers throughout my day. So…that was my vent. I really need to find myself some other Catholic moms to associate with. 🙂
With people like that the more you explain yourself the more they will try and convert you. You don’t have to explain your decisions to any strangers…maybe family if it’s something that effects them directly but not strangers or even friends. Women many times are too open about their decisions. I would left if at what you said about being open to whatever comes. If they were really interested and wanted to know why you made that decision it would be your perogative to explain it to them with the understanding that you won’t ever convert them but maybe get them to think but again I would just stay with the short and sweet answer.

I agree. But IKEA furniture worries me as there are always a few screws, nuts, bolts etc. left over. I always feel like the thing will collapse as soon as i put something on it. 🤷
