I’m not so sure of the contraception argument. Maybe its because they would love more kids, their partner won’t wear it - or they don’t have one, and they are trying to compensate by rationalizing. In addition, people today are like this about EVERYTHING - not just having kids. If you get a new car someone tells you they would not want that kind of car. If you go on holiday someone tells you they would not want to go there. I’m currently at uni as a mature student. Guess what some people are telling me? ‘I don’t envy you I wouldn’t want to all that studying’, ‘What are you going to do with your degree? There are no jobs,’ ‘It’s unlikely you’ll get a good job out of it because of your age.’Such attitudes (although we do not know in this case) are often used to cover the use of contraception or worse. I see the middle child “argument” as rationalization of such behavior, and little else. Was there any love at all in their words? What they are actually asking for is prayer. Words fail us in dealing with others, but they will find it much more difficult to resist the Holy Spirit.
However, you may have hit the nail on the head when you say was there no love in their world? If you were happy in yourself, would you care how many kids other people wanted?
