I have a problem with “false equivalencies”, especially since there’s a strong tendency by some to agree with polls when they reflect one’s position but then reject them if they don’t.

So, if one objects to a particular poll on a supposed objective basis, I would suggest the more appropriate thing to do would be to look for some evidence that indicates that the said poll is wrong.

I guess its all in how one wants to stack the deck:

Question 1: 40.74 said no…but total of about 59% wanted some action taken…so, no…doesn’t pass the math test.

Question 2: If combined response 1 and 3…uh, no…again, doesn’t pass the math test.

Question 3: If noting "…reparations are separate…again, a dismal failure of the math test.

I can’t bear to go on, it is so off the mark…now, you said “here is one of many surveys on the topic. This one targeted black respondents”…your original post said you had read “several” surveys showing blacks did not want reparations.

If you only have this one, or this is the best of your “several”, I would say your claims are not very well substantiated.

Yea, well real people never pass the math test when you do a good survey on a complex issue.

A good survey design comes at the same essential question from multiple angles, and people answer differently. The differences help a researcher understand the nuances of their position.

Q1: Wanting action doesn’t equal reparations, they may just want competent schools, the math you are comparing shouldn’t add up.

Q2: The question asked about Criminal Charges. Reparations is more akin to a civil lawsuit. Again, nobody should expect the number to match because the question was related but different.

Q3: This q assumed reparations were being paid as a given, and asked about the method of payment. It’s a very different question and it’s impossible for the number to match up with your expectation.

Read up on survey design, it’s a complex but interesting field.

I was involved with a survey design back during my senior year of undergrad school, and it is very time consuming and complicated, and even when finally finished you’re not sure if ya got it all right, especially since people can often interpret questions in different ways.

I also was involved here in Michigan with designing standardized tests for public schools, and I saw so many errors in the questioning and the tabulation process that I told the director that I wanted nothing to do with it any longer, and I didn’t. Several years later the tests were replaced by those from a professional testing firm because of the uproar.
