To whom? Are there any still living former slaves?
By Whom? Are the above still living former slaves’ owners still alive? If not then this is ridiculous!

And, if any white person can trace back in their family tree to anyone who served in the Union Army during the Civil War (I can do this), then that person’s family should be exempt from having to pay reparations.

Wrong. Kennedy voted FOR the 1957 Civil Right Act.
historylearningsite.co.uk. The History Learning Site, 27 Mar 2015. 1 Feb 2019.

Kennedy put political realism before any form of beliefs when he voted against Eisenhower’s 1957 Civil Rights Act.

I’ve read on this before, he may have voted for one bill but not the other. This is a matter of research into history.

Meanwhile we have one politician and at least one poster who thinks it is reasonable to . . . .

. . . Take by force, wealth away from innocent people based upon their skin color . . . .

. . . . And take some of that wealth stolen by FORCE from innocent people to enrich themselves (in Government), and distribute some other of that wealth . . . to others based upon their skin color!

(In principle it seems like this could be a chapter taken from a KKK playbook if you juggled those skin colors around a bit.

Very inappropriate and dangerous racist worldview attempting to be put forth here in my opinion.)

The fact that there are those who publicly advocate such a race-based paradigm is shameful.

"Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore."

I think the hundreds of thousands that died in the Civil War might have been a high price, no?

50 years of government social assistance, broken fatherless homes, multi generational welfare not good enough? Government grants, bursaries, scholarships for higher education, no?

I’ve heard in some academic quarters that reparations to be paid in full to the tune of 18 trillion dollars, and no income taxes for AA ever.

I think we’re square.

Or at least maybe we can get a discount? I had three family members who volunteered and fought for the Union Army, would I get a discount for each? 🤔

At the very least. If we are going to play out this silliness, then let’s go for broke. My ancestor had 13 siblings, so 1/2 of Southern Illinois today would probably be exempt. 🤔

Was it that he voted against a bill in committee and voted for a watered down form of the bill? Too many people say JFK voted against Civil Rights in 1957 for this to be accepted as a falsehood.
(@JonNC too) Look to authoritative sources, not popular news sources.

JFK votes against the Aiken-Anderson amendment, which would have weakened the bill. But he, along with all these senators voted for the bill:

Aiken (R-VT), Allott (R-CO) Barret (R-WY), Beall (DMD), Bennet (R-UT), Bible (D-NV) Bush (R-CT)
Carroll (D-CO), Case (R-NJ), Case (R-SD), Church (DID), Clark (D-PA), Cooper (R-KT), Cotton (R-NH),
Curtis (R-NE), Dirksen (R-IL), Douglas (D-IL),
Dworshak (R-ID), Flanders (R_VT) Frear (D-DE)
Goldwater (R-AZ), Hayden (D-AZ). Hennings (D-MO),

Johnson (D-TX), Kefauver (D-TE), Kennedy (D-MA),
Knowland (R-CA), Kuchel (R-CA), Langer (R-ND),
Lausche (D-OH), Magnuson (D-WA), Martin (R-IW),

The following senators voted against the bill:

You can find this list here and here and here. In the last reference, just hover your mouse over the state of Massachusetts.

One of the things that never gets addressed in these kinds of discussions is just how many blacks are working class or better off. What’s the story on them? Why are they not living in some ghetto selling drugs or living on welfare? There are plenty of them who don’t live anywhere near that way, seemingly the majority.

37% of black households headed by a single female are below the poverty line as compared to about 30% of all races.

Only 8% of intact, two-parent black families are below the poverty line which, again, is pretty comparable to all families.

So, one assumes no reparations go to the intact black families who are above the poverty line, because they’re living reasonably well. And one assumes no reparations to the white single women with children who are below it because of their race.

So what, then, is the justification for paying the black single-parent households when they’re only 7% more than the whites and Asians? And why on earth would the government be justified in forcing some poverty-stricken single white mother to pay reparations to a black ad executive living in some upscale neighborhood?

Meanwhile we have one politician and at least one poster who thinks it is reasonable to . . . .

. . . Take by force, wealth away from innocent people based upon their skin color . . . .
What politician is that? What is the specific statement that reveals that thinking?
Ditto for poster.

Your points are exactly why discussions of reparations are a waste of time. How would the government determine which specific individual are where they are at today specifically due to their ancestors being slaves in America? Will the government exclude blacks who had no American slaves as ancestors (like Barack Obama)? Will the descendants of black slave owners be required to pay reparations? What about mixed race Americans…would there be partial reparations payments? What about white Americans whose ancestors died during the civil war, and thus caused them to be in poverty…are they owed anything?

It’s just another money grab that will be gamed to death.

What’s to keep non-blacks from waving their (possibly doctored) DNA background description and claiming at least a small partial descent from Africans sufficient to claiming a few bucks? Who defines who is black enough to receive reparations? Who decides that intact black families living above the poverty line are not eligible to receive payments? Who decides whether whites living below the poverty line should still be forced to pay them? Who is going to tell the majority of whites who are descended from the post Civil War migration that they still have to pay? Who decides whether the Asians or the Hispanics have to pay them?

One suspects it’s the modern version of the promise of “forty acres and a mule” that will never be delivered or seriously intended. But it sounds good in getting votes.

Too many people have said it including his biographers, this isn’t just “popular news media”.

dvdjs . . .
What politician is that?
If you can’t (or refuse to) see it a “pep talk” from me isn’t going to help you see it dvdjs.

For all others, draw your own conclusions.

Re-read everything and see the implicit support for this racism that I mentioned above.

Kennedy may have voted against it in committee and voted for the watered down version that was given in the Senate. Too many journalists and biographers say he voted against civil rights. It’s pretty well accepted fact. We need to find a book on this rather than just webpages, I have read what happened before somewhere. So, I’m not just going to accept links of some bill as total proof.

Perhaps one can submit an author who says Kennedy voted for Civil Rights back in 1957.
Kennedy most famously voted against the Republican-backed Civil Rights Act of 1957 that would eventually expand voting rights, the first major piece of civil rights legislation since the Reconstruction.

Kennedy, as well as many other Democrats within Congress, voted against the bill after they temporarily filibustered it in the Senate. The bill eventually passed.

If Kennedy truly was the civil rights advocate he claimed to be when he ran for president, then he should have voted to pass the bill regardless of how his fellow party members felt.

JFK:

_
He had voted against Eisenhower’s 1957 Civil Rights bill and at first largely reacted to events rather than drafting more specific legislation. He used federal troops to respond to attacks on the 1961 ‘freedom riders’ and to force governors in both Mississippi and Alabama to allow black students to attend state universities. He also began to examine employment discrimination by placing his brother Robert in charge of an Equal Employment Opportunities Committee.

see the implicit support
Ahh. Implicit. So people have not actually said what you attribute to them. Good to know.

If you can’t (or refuse to) see it
I don’t see things that are not there.
