I think there are alot of parishes with support groups such as what you describe and I think they are wonderful things. However, having been made familiar with the previous work of the Huffinton Post, I find it rather unlikely that they would be inclined to describe any group as accepting toward gay people that did not accept the gay lifestyle as moral.
That’s why I went to the Parish website to see what it said. Less bias there.

It looks to me like they’re trying to evangelize to the gay community and are being careful not to violate Church teaching but be gentle enough so the folks who need them the most won’t run away before even giving it a chance.

It’s a tough line to walk, because they will get accused of being too “soft” on the sinners. However, if they are leading people to God so He can change their hearts, who are we to condemn them? If even one person chooses to follow Jesus because of what they’re doing, I would rejoice.

I have never, ever came across a parish who identified itself as “affirming, inclusive” etc. of gays and lesbians, and meant that they in fact, want to help them overcome same sex attraction and lead a chaste, Godly life. Ever. I have seen parishes that have support groups for Catholics struggling with SSA (usually Courage) and they clearly identify that that is what the group is for. This parish identifies their groups as “Gay Catholics” and “Catholic Lesbians.” No where do they suggest that these are support groups to help overcome SSA. Rather, the “Catholic Lesbians” group is described as a group that"provide a safe place for gay women to come together and discuss issues related to spirituality, identity and community." The “Gay Catholics” group is described as "a men’s group that meets on the first and third Fridays of the month at 7:00 PM in a welcoming, affirming environment to address gay Catholic life and how best to live authentically our commitment to the Gospel.“Gay Catholic life?” Somehow does not sound like they mean “celibate Catholic life for men struggling with SSA.” One of their bulletins even included a “blessing for Pride weekend” and a “Pre-Pride Mass.” Their facebook page includes a picture of the parish marching in the parade. Pride weekend celebrates homosexual acts. Definitely not something a faithful Catholic should be involved in.

In addition, the Huffington Post stated that they are known for their inclusive stance on homosexuality. If the parish were actually sticking to the Church’s teaching that homosexual acts are sinful, I don’t think HuffPo would have said that. More like, “this parish is known for its evil, intolerant stance that-gay-people-are-evil-and-shouldn’t-be-themselves-and-will-all-go-to-hell-wow-those-Catholics-they-are-so-behind-the-times-and-stupid.”

I’m not trying to bash this parish or any of the people who go there. I guess there is a slim chance that all of this is wrong and they are actually trying to help these people overcome their attractions. I don’t think so though. I never, ever bring up individual parishes on here, but this one was already brought up in the news story anyway.
Did you find anything on the website that said “homosexual acts are ok”? I didn’t.

And on the gay pride parade-I’ve actually been to it. I haven’t just looked at pictures. It would not be out of place at all for a Church group to march in the parade saying that they love gay people and welcome them to their parish. The Pride parade is NOT all what you see in pictures and on TV-yes, there are drag queens in rainbow boas being completely over the top-but that’s not the entire story. That’s just what makes the news because it’s over the top.

You’re not going to get gay people who have been in the life to come to your church if the FIRST thing you say to them is “your life is immoral and you are evil”. You have to start with, “we don’t hate you, we love you and God loves you too”. Once they believe that and understand that love-THEN they are ready to respond to that love by changing their lives. All we can do as Christians is lead people to God, God does all the hard work converting them.

It’s not the approach every parish would take, but I want to believe the best of these folks.

So Tom Cruise’s first wife, Nicole Kidman, returned to the Catholic Church and was married in the Church (the first marriage didn’t really count, as the Church doesn’t recognize Scientology weddings).

And now his second wife seems to be returning to the Church.

Interesting to note that Cruise was raised a Catholic and seems to prefer marrying Catholic women.

Perhaps prayers will open his eyes and he’ll return, and return to a church he is obviously drawn to, and to a Catholic spouse he seems to be seeking.

I have read that Mimi Rogers, Cruise’s first wife, is sometimes credited with introducing him to Scientology.

Unpacking report that Katie Holmes has rejoined Catholic Church
A report from the Huffington Post with the decisive headline “Katie Holmes Returns to Catholic Church” has been rattling around the Internet since Monday. But the Internet newspaper cites a lone unnamed member of the church choir, who claims Holmes has registered as a parishioner of the Church of St. Francis Xavier in New York.
“We have no comment regarding Katie Holmes in the context of reports of her becoming a parishioner of the Church St. Francis Xavier,” said Patrick Brewis, the church’s director of stewardship.
Brewis said the church has been flooded with calls and e-mails about the prospect of Holmes’ possible registration. He noted that regardless of who a parishioner or potential parishioner might be, be the church doesn’t disclose that information.
The article says that Holmes has not been seen participating in any liturgies or receiving Communion there. It just goes to show that you can’t trust the Huffington Post.

I had read that it was Tom Cruise’s sister who introduced him to Scientology.
Who knows?

Interesting view!

Only Tom himself knows for sure, I guess. 🙂 But, after reading your post, I just did a net search on “Who introduced Tom Cruise to Scientology” and among the results, this article came up.

How Tom Cruise Was Introduced To Scientology: REPORT

Tom Cruise was already on his way to becoming a movie star well before he joined the Church of Scientology. With leading roles in hit films like “Risky Business” and “Top Gun,” Cruise’s celebrity status was quickly building, which made him a prime target to be inducted into the Church.

The actor was first introduced to Scientology – a religion that was founded in 1953 by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard – in the late 1980s by his first wife, actress Mimi Rogers, whose father, Phil Spickler, was one of the church’s most powerful members during the religion’s early years, reports RadarOnline."…

Yep, it appears you are right about his first wife’s influence.

Wow, I looked at the school’s website. Rigorous academics, sports, the arts, and religion interwoven through everything. It looks like Suri will receive a wonderful education. What she chooses to do with that opportunity is up to her.

EWTN needs to do an interview with Tom Cruise and ask him why both of his wives have returned home to the true religion, and he still is ‘worshipping’ scientology, that would make for ratings for the network and hopefully make him think of returning home himself 🙂

This is true.

“The church…is known for … its welcoming of many gay and lesbian Catholics.”

Isn’t every parish supposed to be welcoming of gay and lesbian Catholics? And straight Catholics, and tall Catholics, and short Catholics, and black Catholics, and white Catholics…
Thank you!! That’s what I was thinking. Every Catholic Church welcomes gay and lesbian Catholics!! Smh…
