Kill animal - is it a sin?

Is it wrong to kill animal intentionally?

When I was in high school, I had a group of classmates who loved to kill lizards, insects, etc. Once there was a lizard in my classroom, and they deliberately used the leg of a chair to crush its head. It seems that they really enjoyed it.

I’m not talking abt mosquito or flies. Though for ants, usually I place them in the more appropriate place rather than kill them. But now I try to prevent them coming to my kitchen. 😃

Any opinion?
I think killing any living creature “for fun” is a sin and the person having such fun should seek psychological help. Many psychopathic killers start out torturing small animals. I’d worry if my child enjoyed killing lizards, etc.

Doesn’t bother me in the least, I just completely disagree with you, that’s all. I hunt and butcher domestic animals for food. You don’t have to, just don’t tell me not to.
I’m not

Don’t know how you can argue with the twisted logic that is being OK with abortion and crying foul at an animals death.
Having a baby can ruin someone’s life. It can make hell on earth for someone. Killing an animal is only for food and clothes (not a nescessity).

I feel really bad right now. You see, we had a pet chick and sometimes, we don’t really notice it following us around the house. Sometimes, it would even follow us going outside, so we have to make sure he doesn’t escape out where there are cats.

Now, just around an hour ago, I went outside the house for a few minutes. When I went back into the house and opened the screen door, I discovered that our pet chick had been squished when I let the door close behind me. I found it there on the corner of the door, lifeless.

I feel really awful and guilty. It’s not that I’m saying it’s not my fault, but did I sin in any way in this situation?
It was an accident. Accidents aren’t sins.

Why is it that in some States in USA a higher species animal killer goes to the electric chair, but a lower species animal killer does not get as much as a fine!!!

That is arrogant hypocracy. Regardless of species, either it is wrong to commit murder or it is not. But it cannot logically be both unless one is prepared to admit to being arrogant
Are you equating human beings to animals? Do you believe humans have a soul?

I personally feel that animals are people. Would you like to be squashed my chair a leg. If someone squashed a human with a chair leg wouldn’t be a huge deal about it later? Animals feel just like we do and aspire to God just like we do.

I am a vegeteration/animal right activist so my opinions here a little strong. Sorry if that bothers you.
I’m not sure why you’re here at Catholic Answers Forums—you don’t appear to be a Catholic, never mind even a Christian!!!

Again, why are you here? You obviously believe animals are superior to humans and you don’t believe human beings are created in the image and likeness of God. You also don’t believe human beings have a soul…How can you sympathize with a little animal that has no ability to reason, no soul, but have no sympathy or empathy for the most defenseless human being on this earth–in what is supposed to be the most protected place on earth–the mother’s womb!

I am actually and that really insults me that you would say that.

In fact I think it is less of a sin to be an active freemason than to be a lower-species animal killer 😦
Which of course is strictly your opinion. I think the Holy Fathers have written more on masonry and its problems than on what is an improper use of our dominion over irrational animals. So someone who shoots a bird with a pellet gun is worse than a freemason? I am sure more than myself would disagree.

It insults me to read what you have written. To equate the life of an animal with the level of a human being is wrong and not in the bible, so that is not Christian to say so. You seem to be okay with murdering a human being, but God forbid any hurt a mosquito that carries a disease. Killing animals for fun is wrong, but God did give us domain over the earth and His creatures.

I plan on going vegetarian for Lent and vegan for Holy Week. Course that’s a matter of self-sacrifice and not because I think killing animals is wrong. Seeing as how Jesus ate meat, I’m pretty sure it’s not a sin.
Don’t know how you can argue with the twisted logic that is being OK with abortion and crying foul at an animals death.
The one vegan guy I know also happens to be pro-life since, in his words “If I think that it’s morally wrong to kill an unfertilized chicken egg, I’d be a big hypocrite to think it’s fine to kill a human embryo”

Course, I think he’s the exception and not the rule.

I originally read about Professor Davis’ study in the Statesman Journal newspaper. I could not find that article.

At one point the killing of mice was mentioned. Be happy you did not live in Australia when this was occuring:

youtube.com/watch?v=JH4EFgRB4bU

This is the short version. I think there is a longer version with audio. I believe the Australian government ended up having to do a widespread dispersal of poison to end the mouse plague. Also if you take the time to view the longer version there is a segment of a cat watching the hundreds of mice pour by and the cat has a very perplexed look on its face. Sort of like, “What the BLAZES am I going to do about this?”

My thoughts are that killing an animal is not a sin. Cruelty towards animals would be a sin. Four years ago members of P.E.T.A. were convicted being cruel to animals:

www.thisistrue.com/peta.html

If you care to you can research this more to flesh out the details about the operations of P.E.T.A. In my opinion the ‘E’ needs to be replaced with a ‘U’ (u for unethical).

Hope everyone enjoys the links, especially the mouse plague.

God bless

If you are going to call yourself a practicing Catholic, then that would mean that you’re in full agreement with the teaching magisterium of the church, that you would want to be so, that you would want to understand the scriptures more fully, that you would want to be in communion with Christ and His church. Also, if you’re a practising Catholic, you need to go to confession at least a minimum of once per year, but any serious Catholic would want to go more often to receive more graces, etc. etc.
Things such as abortion are not simply a matter of opinion. Read the documents of the church and papal encyclicals to find out what our beautiful church teaches about the sanctity of human life.

Can you honestly say that you are equal with a dog? Do you not find that you have a higher intellect, that you are more sacred than a chicken?
I hope you do, but it doesn’t seem like it. Which means you don’t think too highly of yourself. That’s a shame. You have more dignity and worth than you realize…

I did not say that I was okay with killing a human being. I wrote exactley what I meant to say and I do not write that. I am Catholic and you have insulted me. Just because I do not believe everything that man has made for me to read does not diminish my religious affiliation. I’m done arguing. I am sorry if I have offended anyone. I am also sorry that most of you are too ignorant to realize the pain and suffering you are putting upon innocent animals. They are creations of God too and they have feelings and nerves just like everyone else. If that seems wrong to someone for me to say so or un Catholic than so be it. It doesn’t change the fact that I am. I got to church, I practice lent, I love everyone and everything (even their sins sometimes however), I thank God for everything I have, and pray for others who are less fortunate.

You sound full of youself.

You sound full of youself.
No, Dee sounds like someone trying to get all of your statements squeezed into one coherent philosophy. Your opinions on abortion and the “personhood” of animals are in stark contradiction with Catholic teaching. You then went on to say how insulted you feel because Dee said you don’t sound like a Catholic.

Well, you don’t. For what it’s worth, anyone reading my opinions would conclude that I’m not a Buddhist. Why? Because my beliefs are in conflict with Buddhism. When you express distinctly non-Catholic beliefs while claiming that you are a Catholic, a certain amount of confusion is justified.

I never said you said. I said you seem to be okay with the murdering of a human being.

Hmm, seems like you are okay with the murdering of a human being. After all, why else would say that having baby can be hell on earth for somebody?

Lastly, I am not questioning your Catholicism. I will say that it is not right to equate a animal to the level a human. God specified that we are on top and they are below us.

is it a sin to kill an animal if you are killing it fir the meat?
is it a sin to kkill an animal if it is poseing a threat to you or a pet?
