Then for whatever reason in your personal spiritual walk you feel that it is best for your own spiritual life to not eat meat. That’s between you and God. The important thing to realize is that scripture, tradition, and church authority and teaching never condemn the eating of meat. So when these discussions come up when someone asks the church teaching it is appropriate to give exactly that - the church teaching.
There are things in my own personal life that I abstain from because I feel that God has asked me to avoid those things in my own life. I also know these things are not condemned by the church, and if people don’t want to partake in these things that’s their choice. I certainly cannot hope or expect anyone else to adopt my personal preferences. I feel this is the same case with eating meat. I applaud you for choosing to abstain in order to draw nearer to Christ in your own life. It is a horrible thing to assume, however, that because of your abstinence you are doing a “better Christian duty” than someone who does eat meat. People who are eating meat are likely abstaining from other things that you regularly indulge in as a personal devotion.
You also admit that you have problems with God in the Old Testament. God is unchanging and infinitely more wise than us. I know that God is loving and just, as well as omniscient. He, for whatever reason, committed these acts that you (and even I) take negatively at times. But God doesn’t make mistakes, and all his judgments are just and holy. I cannot know why he did what he did, but I have faith in who he is, and I know that he is perfect in all things by how he has acted in my own life. So while some of the things in my limited human scope seem unjust or violent, I know that God is just, and so these things were appropriate for whatever reason.
As a side note, your comments about God of the OT concern me more than the misinterpretation of personal preference/personal spirituality and Christian duty/law. Honestly, I think you should have a talk with your priest about it. Satan can use those things to tear us apart. When we start thinking that we are somehow more peaceful or holier than God…there’s a problem. I only say this because I used to wrestle with this in my past.

Nip it in the bud or it’ll eat you alive. Trust me. I know.
