But are they doing so now? It doesn’t appear they are. Yet you said there is a big difference. I am confused.

So why bring up that the Irish were helped because they were legal? There was no way to be illegal.

They were helped because it was the right thing to do.

Helping the migrants now is the right thing to do.
Because they weren’t illegal. So it is a fallacy to say the Knights have helped illegals from Day 1.

This is one of the more ridiculous arguments that people can make…claiming our ancestors were illegal. They weren’t! It was Legal 200+ years ago to come into the country by ship. Times have changed and there is not a legal process to become a citizen and come into the country.

Oh I think there were ways to be illegal. Was Fr. McGivney helping Chinese immigrants / Japanese immigrants / Indian immigrants? I think not…🤣

He was helping his own community, I dare say!

Saying that is the same thing as saying the Knights didn’t help space aliens.

There weren’t space aliens to be helped.

As I’ve stated, I don’t know. Their release was very vague and broad. I haven’t seen any specifics.

And for a third time, my “big difference” was in response to the founding days of the Knights and their help of immigrants. They weren’t helping illegal immigrants.

Maybe because he was in New Haven , CT and Asian immigrants generally arrived on the west coast?

Correct. So if space aliens came to earth today, would it be correct to say that the Knights have been helping space aliens since day 1?

Oh, was he chastising people not to use the term “Yellow Peril”?
You think there was no news coverage and editorializing on the East Coast about immigration controversy about Chinese / Japanese / Indian immigration ?

You are in fact confirming that he was mainly helping “his own community”, as Theo520 said he did in post #3. When everyone jumped down @Theo520’s throat…remember?

But by all appearances they are not helping illegal immigrants now. They are helping the refugees at the border. So for the third time, there is something in your statements that do not make sense.

Really? How can you know what he “didn’t” preach. Mother Theresa went to India to help and serve Indian Hindus. Father Damien didn’t ask if the leper’s were his kind.

The Church has always sponsored missions and missionary work.

I’m Catholic before being a US or an Italian citizen. Or a Republican or Democrat.

And I’ve said, their release was very broad. It didn’t say how they were helping or who they were helping. it just said they were helping.

If they are helping legal refugees I’m all for it. If they are helping illegal refugees, I do not think it is a good idea for the Knights to get involved.

I don’t know if he mainly helped just Irish immigrants, or other immigrants as well. I was asking - - remember?
I would love to know the extent that he was helping his community, vs outside his community on a nationwide basis, the way that Catholics tend to do now. Any experts here on the life of Fr. McGivney?

It does not seem that broad to me:

“We are prepared to expand it, with additional resources, to help those in refugee camps in every border state — including Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California”.

They specifically stated they are helping the refugee camps. The people in those camps have not done anything illegal.

No offense but this is classic taking a quote out of context. Here is the whole quote

““We are prepared to commit at least $250,000 immediately in humanitarian aid for refugees to the Southern Border,” he said. “We are prepared to expand it, with additional resources, to help those in refugee camps in every border state — including Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California.””

So the $250k is being donated immediately for “humanitarian aid for refugees” at the border.
They are planning on expanding that help to the camps.

Ok, so you think that the current aid, not the expansion, may be going to “illegal refugees”. It makes little sense. First of all, why would the Knights change their policy on extended aid. More importantly, who are these “illegal refugees”? Well, they can only be people who have been released by the government while their case is being determined and then fail to show up for hearings. And you think there is a possibility the Knights know how to reach these people, when our government does not?

No, a better explanation is that you were misinformed when you made your statement (strongly) implying the Knight are helping illegals. You have a strong opinion about the situation at the border, yet you have not taken the time to understand what is actually occurring. That’s what I think. Don’t feel bad, it is a common problem among folks who are politically opposed to immigration.

If the Knights are focusing on helping legal refugees I’m all for it. My fear though is that they are drifting more along the same line as the USCCB. Sometimes you have to follow the money.

Every year since 1975, the government has funneled tens of millions of taxpayer dollars to the USCCB for migrant and refugee services. Yearly totals exploded under Obama and are now a huge share of the USCCB’s annual budget:
  • In 2013, the bishops received $73,715,703 from the government — nearly 32% of the USCCB’s total budget.
  • In 2014, the figure leapt to $79,590,512 — nearly 33% of the USCCB budget.
  • In 2015, the total climbed to $80,733,062 — nearly 38% of the USCCB budget.
  • In 2016, American prelates pocketed $95,256,272 — nearly 39% of the USCCB budget.
It is no surprise that every day it seems the USCCB is coming out with more left leaning rhetoric concerning illegal immigrants.

Can you please provide the source for these figures? I am not saying your figures are wrong, but I would like to understand them in context.

I’m not opposed to immigration. It is one thing that has made the US great.

I’m opposed to illegal immigration and doing things that promote illegal immigration.

And Carl Anderson used the term refugees. That word can mean a lot of things

More about Fr. McGivney:

In April 1882, Father McGivney, with the permission of Bishop McMahon, wrote
an informative letter about the Knights of Columbus to all the pastors of the Diocese of Hartford. In the letter, Father McGivney stated that the Order’s primary objective was to dissuade Catholics from joining secret societies by providing them with Catholic societies that had better advantages at times of death or sickness. He urged each pastor to exert influence “in the formation of a council in your parish.” Father McGivney personally installed the first officers of San Salvador Council 1 in New Haven, in May 1882.
