Iā€™m going to my first Latin Mass Sunday. Itā€™s the Tridentine Low Mass. I havenā€™t been able to scare up a Chapel veil of my mothers, can I just cover my hair with a shall? Also what kind of dress? I dress nice for Mass every week but do I need to wear only a long skirt? I donā€™t mean mini, too old, but about 2" below knee? I also havenā€™t been able to find a Latin Missal they only had NO in Latin. Iā€™m really looking forward to it. How long does the mass ussaully last?
Thanks for any help.

Usually they have a box of ā€˜extraā€™ veils outside the chapel. But just in case, go buy a womenā€™s hankerchief and you can at least put that on your head.

Yes your skirt probably should come below the knee when you sit down.

Usually the chapels have a missal there, one side in english the other side in Latin so you can follow along.

Low mass generally lasts about 45 min to an hour (in my experience).

The Low Mass I attended last weekend had no particular dress code. Veils were common, probably more were wearing one than not. But without one, you would not have been out of place.

Hey, St. V. Howya doing?

We have 2 churches that celebrate Latin Mass.

One is St. Maryā€™s Oratory which only has Latin Mass. High Noon Mass every day too.

The other is at my Parish!

Thanks,
Stephanie

I went to my first Latin Mass since Vatican ll, and I just loved it. I grew up with this mass and I was wondering why they donā€™t say one once in awhile until I came to Catholic Answers and saw that there were a lot of people missing it too. So I looked up the closest church that performs Latin Mass, and I went this morning. They have two masses on Sunday and daily during the week. Actually, they only say Latin Masses, I got lucky considering all the posts that say they can only attend once a month. Itā€™s a bit of a drive, about thirty miles, but I donā€™t care. I was very apprehensive but a lady greeted me at the door and she was very kind, explaining everything as well as providing me with a little scarf for my head. It was so beautiful. The Church is quite small and quaint with lots of statues, candles, and of course the altar. It all came back to me, it was like I went back in time and I realized, this is what itā€™s all about. When the priest, with his back to me, raised the chalice up to the crucifix of our Lord, I had such a feeling of love inside of me that I will never forget. And listen to this folks, there was no talking, laughing, chewing gum or chatter at the back of the church, which I might say has really bothered me lately while attending my own church. Sorry to go on so long but I wanted to share this with you, and I will go back next week. Thank you for your comments that convinced me to do this.

God Bless you all

**The Archdiocese of Cincinnati has two indult Massesā€¦One in downtown Cincinnati, and one in Dayton. There are also twoā€¦at least ā€œindependedntā€ Catholic churches (Bishop Dolan for one, and I donā€™t know the other one), and one SSPX church. **

**I do think people are beginning to turn to these churches, and away from their regular pariishes because they are longing for reverence, awe and a sense of the holy, as well as a sense of respect for the Eucharistā€¦Not to mention good music. **

Fr. Cekada, who is the assistant pastor at Bishop Dolanā€™s independant Catholic church, says mass in a ā€œparishā€ in Columbus every Sunday morning. There is nothing to distinguish the independant Church from an actual parish of the diocese. And since it is located just south of the OSU campus I would guess (but I donā€™t know for sure since I havenā€™t been there) that there are quite a few college students there who are unfamiliar with the diocese and therefore have no idea that it isnā€™t affiliated w/ the diocese.

Eventually the Traditional Latin Mass shall once again be back in her place. I pray that every parish celebrates this Mass one day. In all its forms, not only Tridentine]

Warning:Fr.Cekada and Bishop Dolan are sedevacantists. Do not support them. Also they are not associated with the SSPX.[They were expelled for sedevacantism in 1983]

**I wouldnā€™t be surprised if what you say is true. The parish here is very Catholic, and anyone looking for a Traditional parish would be delighted with it. I visited with a friend, and have to say that it was wonderful to be in such a place of reverenceā€¦I did not take communion, of course, because I understand that I should not do so. **

**While SGG is a sedevacantist Catholic Church, I have to admit that it was refreshing to be in a church where reverence and proper dress were expectedā€¦I can understand why people are attracted to itā€¦Especially when our indult Masses are so hard to get toā€¦Why canā€™t we have indult Masses out here in the 'burbs, where most of us live? The two we have are in urban areas that are hard for many of us to get to. **

I suspect that the indult Masses are right where the Archbishop wants them to beā€¦

Yep. Iā€™m aware of that.

There is no reason to support them here in Columbus. Bishop Griffin graciously allows the TLM every Sunday as well as on Holy Days and First Saturdays. As interest has grown over the years so has the frequency of Mass.

Given the clarification from Rome that it is ok to attend the TLM in an SSPX parish as long as you donā€™t adhere to the schism I would imagine that the same would probably hold for Independent parishes. Taking communion shouldnā€™t be a problem.

I am curious to see Fr. Cekadaā€™s Mass but have no plans to in the near future because it overlaps with the Indult TLM.

SV is correctā€¦There will, in all probability by a little basket of veils for you to choose from.

**As to what to wearā€¦no sleeveless tops, short skirts, skirts with long slits, jeans o,r in some cases slacks. **

It is not really necessary, in some indult Masses to wear anything on your headā€¦Some do, and some donā€™t. Iā€™d take something just to be on the safe side. I do know that this kind of thing seems to be optional in the Cincinnati indult Mass.

Here in Columbus the TLM is held very near to downtown and not out in the burbs but I tend to view this as a positive thing. It means that it is more centrally located. Better that than to have in in one suburb and force those who live on the opposite side of town to drive farther.

As interest for the TLM continues to increase then we may begin to see it spread into multiple suburbs but until that time i believe it is best to have it in a somewhat central location.

Plus, I donā€™t know about Cincy, but in Cols all of the Catholic looking parishes are closer to downtown. The more modern(ist) meeting hall looking parishes are in the burbs.

**Bishop Dolan conducted the High Mass I attendedā€¦It was beautifully doneā€¦At least ten altar serversā€¦good music, and a reverent congregation. **

SGG has just built a new church, which is even handier to the suburbanites, and is doing very wellā€¦over six hundred members, I think. There are four Masses every Sundayā€¦One High Mass, and three Lowā€¦one in the evening. Peole come from three states.

Years ago I did attend one of Fr. Cekadaā€™s Massesā€¦It, too was well doneā€¦

I believe that Dolan almost always says the Masses there. AFAIK it is only him and Cekada and Cekada is here in Columbus for the 9:30AM Mass.

Iā€™ve seen the website and it looks beautiful. Iā€™m not terribly familiar with Cincy but I see that SGG is in West Chester. And that certainly sounds more convenient for suburbanites than downtown Cincy.

**This is pretty much true, here, too. However, I donā€™t think of Cincinnati proper as being a central locationā€¦Maybe it isā€¦But, many of us NEVER get down thereā€¦no reason toā€¦Sacred Heart, which is where the indult Mass is held each Sunday is about thirty minutes from us. Not that far, really, but my husband would never allow me to drive downtown alone, anyway, and he hates to drive down there. Soā€¦I am more or less stuck our here! **

PSā€¦My husband seldom ā€œallowsā€ me to do anythingā€¦We have been married nearly 37 years, and neither has to ask the permission of the other to do anythingā€¦But, he would not be happy if I drove downtownā€¦and I would not like to do it, either.

Yes, SGG is in West Chester, which is right in the middle of a huge area of growthā€¦I live near there, and my own town is growing even faster. It was a good move for them. And, yes, the new church is beautifulā€¦It is an interim church, but is more beautiful than most permanent churches around here.

Althoughā€¦my own parish is building a new fifteen hundred seat church, and I think it is going to be beautiful, tooā€¦Much more traditonal than our present churchā€¦The peole got tired of the Protestant look.
