Aparecida, May 18, 2007 / 12:24 pm (CNA).- The president of the Ecclesia Dei Commission, Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos, said this week “the time has come to facilitate” access to the liturgy “according to the liturgical books promulgated by Blessed John XXIII in 1962.”
“The Holy Father has the intention of extending to the entire Latin Church the possibility of celebrating the Holy Mass and the Sacraments according to the liturgical books promulgated by Blessed John XXIII in 1962,” the Colombian cardinal said during a speech at the 5th General Conference of the Latin American Bishops’ Council.
“There exists today a new and renewed interest in this liturgy, which was never abolished and which, as we have said, is considered a treasure.” “For the same reason, the Holy Father thinks that the time has come to make this liturgy available to the faithful…making it an extraordinary form of the one Roman rite,” he said.
In this way, Cardinal Castrillon added, “the Holy Father wishes to conserve the immense spiritual, cultural and aesthetic treasures linked to the ancient liturgy. The recovery of this treasure is united to the current liturgy of the Church, which is by no means less precious.”
“This generous offer of the Vicar of Christ,” he noted, aims to put “all of the treasures of the Latin liturgy, which for centuries has nourished the spiritual lives of so many generations of faithful Catholics, at the disposal of the Church.”

As I’ve said elsewhere, as long as they don’t do away with the Novus Ordo. There are those who don’t know Latin and would feel alienated with a service they can’t understand.

I have the impression that the two are considered to be of equal value, and therefore N.O. would certainly not be done away with. See:

This is exactly what happened in 1970. Do you think anyone stopped to think of the mass numbers of people who would be lead out of the Church in the coming years? I think it is time to lead them back in.

Then have both but for crying out loud don’t make a generation that doesn’t know Latin sit through something that won’t grasp their attention. The problem is not what language it is in. We can keep it in English and still bring back reverence for what is happening.

You will have both. Eventually, though, the TLM will come full circle, and will be the Mass of the Church once again.

Keep the Novus Ordo while I’m alive. Everyone is still assuming that the reverence is lacking because the Mass is not in Latin. This is not the case. Reverence is lackign because we fail to educate the people on what is taking place at the Mass. I prefer it in English.

Nobody thinks that lack of reverence has to do with lack of Latin.

Have you just peeped into your crystal glass? :confused: Or how do you know?

I pray for true devotion, not for a particular form of worship. If someone left the Church just because TLM ceased to be the only Mass, there is something wrong with the faith of that person. And yes, I know people who give this excuse for not going to Church today.
I hope the TLM will not be the only Mass of the Church because I prefer participating in the vernacular. But if it were to become the only option, I would still go to Church (Lord, protect me from presumption here.)

They probably know more Latin than they think. Besides don’t have to be a master of Latin in order to understand the TLM.

And if you do study Latin, you have the advantage of being able to delve into great non-church literature by Ovid, Cicero, Virgil, etc. I have an excellent interlinear translation of one of Virgil’s book. (When I take a break from this board.🙂 ) Hopefully Latin will again be taught at local colleges.

I think they teach Latin in some law schools. In medicine I know they do.

Yes, yes, people of no education went to Latin masses a hundred years ago. But this world is not the same as it used to be back then. Uneducated people also tend to appreciate it if they can actually understand what is going on.

You are right, the world has changed since then! “Uneducated people” are more educated than they were hundreds of years ago. They can learn basic Latin, and it would be just as rewarding for them as “educated people.”
