Yeah I plan to incorporate some fasting as well. I want to try and plan ahead so that it dosent creep up on me and I dont do anything. If anyone has any suggestions let me know

Eating fish on Friday, Stations of the Cross, spiritual
reading.

I’m giving up meat. Haven’t told my bride yet…she may not be too happy about it. 😬

Not sure yet about my individual stuff yet. I think my kids might finally be old enough to attend Friday Stations of the Cross instead of just doing stations in the hallway in our home. So, I’m excited about that. I might try some things to really cultivate silence as a form of prayer in our home. Starting small with like 30 seconds.

I always give up sushi for Lent (the rest of the year sushi night is every Saturday).

I also give up all secular shows, though I cancelled Netflix last month and currently out of things to watch anyway so it’s not going to be as much a sacrifice this year.

Will be giving up this site. Thinking about also giving up Facebook and Catholic news websites. Otherwise I just replace TV and CAF with Cal catholic and LifeSite news (yes, I know how some of you guys feel about them).

Stations of the Cross followed by Mass on Friday nights at my parish.

Will try to fast on Fridays or at least not eat between meals. Fasting is harder for me than most people.

Giving up REALLY, For Good… Smoking Cigarettes. Also
doing at least Five Novena’s.

Does anyone know any meet free basic simple meals.
Beans cooked with some onion over rice. Tortas made with refried beans spread on a crisp corn tortilla with cheese on top. Doesn’t have to be fancy. Honestly, a lot of things we think of as “side dishes” work as a meal. An example is Espinacas con Garbanzos; both the Spaniards and the Greeks have a version that I know of. I’m sure there are variations on the idea all across the Mediterranean. Another direction to go would be the Italian bread soups. Lots of variations there, too. Potato and leek soups. Lentils over rice or lentil soups with bread. Lots of these are a variation on the super basic beans with onion and/or garlic and rice and/or bread or some variation of cornmeal, but it is also what people lived on.

As for overall ideas, we generally give up going out to eat so we can give the money saved to the food bank. Turning off sound- and picture-making devices for some silence is a good practice. Reading spiritual things instead of things written for entertainment (at least some of the time) is a good practice. Donating time to the less fortunate is a good practice, particularly if you get to interact with them as persons.

There’s nothing that stops your penance from including doing all of the cooking. Lots of vegetarian dishes are also good as a side dish for a piece of grilled or roasted meat. (In other words, just because you give up meat doesn’t mean she has to do it.)

No and I don’t expect her to. I am going to tell her that I will take care of my meals for the season and if she or the kids want anything that (name removed by moderator)repare, they are welcome to it.

Great Petra

I really like the idea of those recipes and will definitely have that for dinner. I love fish and kind of feel i am not fasting properly and should be eating more simpler meal.

It would do her a lot more good if you’d take care of at least some nights of the cooking for everybody.
(Penance is great; but “almsgiving” is even better…and if giving extra time to a mom isn’t giving to the needy, I don’t know what is.)

If nothing else, consider the understanding that you take on the cooking on Fridays.

The traditional meals of the poor have a lot of dishes that are frugal but not what I’d call a penance to eat. That’s OK, though! Developing a love for simplicity is a good thing. It is alright to enjoy it.

Speaking of: you might look into fish dishes that used dried fish or seafood instead of fresh or frozen. That is a protein source that has a long history with those who don’t have a lot of money.

Go to Costco and get a box of breaded tilapia fillets in the frozen section. Put tilapia in the oven. While fish is cooking, make rice. Done. I do this every Friday.

I do and will continue to.
If she and the kids aren’t into that much meatless, it isn’t hard to do the cooking where you only eat the sidedish. I have a black bean chili that we used to always make for cookouts, and it was a meal for the vegans. It only gets better with time, and it is really good with rice or quinoa.
