Let’s have the rainbow 🌈 as a Catholic symbol!

I have changed my position now after good points from posters here.
I think as a bare minimum we should not shy away from rainbow colours. I don’t think that’s confrontational. This is just asking for basic rights to use rainbow colours. It doesn’t need to associate with Catholicism but it shouldn’t necessarily be associated with non-Catholicism. So for primary Catholic school kids who love multi colours, why not? For a shop to catch people’s attention why not? Obviously it may not be such a good thing for solemn situations like a mass. But if there is a school kids mass, why not use rainbow colours?

I guess because the colours have been already claimed by Noahides for instance and by LGBTIQ. To be associated with either is not bad, or a scandal .

I guess it’s just branding. If you want to be clearly Catholic / Christian, there are other symbols that demonstrate it.

If we are talking about children’s party, and you have a sky, cloud, rainbow, sun theme—sure have a huge rainbow and run with it.

It’s about context. 🌷

What’s the context of your flower? It is a neutral context. All I want is for the rainbow to be neutral context again. It doesn’t have to imply Catholic or anything else.

I get what you are saying but from a branding / marketing perspective that just won’t be possible.

The rainbow is actively in use by two groups, one uses it and is heavily associated with it. You would confuse people.

If the two groups gave up the brand association with the rainbow you’d have a chance but they have laid claim for decades to it.

That would be like another religious non-Christian group claiming the cross as their symbol whilst we still use it.

I get you want to change what people associated with it, but why? Why not celebrate what we already have? And why take away something from two others group identity?

I guess I wouldn’t have a problem if they use some symbol that nobody usually use anyway.
The special fish symbol and cross is not in daily non religious use. Imagine if the ordinary 🐟 is used by Christianity. I don’t think non catholic fish shops would be happy.
The rainbow is different. Kids love it. It is very decorative as clothing, ornaments, and food such as cakes which don’t necessarily have any political meanings. So my problem is all these nonpoliticised items are now being politicised. Just as if non religious items suddenly have religious meanings I don’t think the secular society would be happy either.
But I understand the branding is usually permanent so it’s near impossible to change. The swatsika used to be a symbol of good luck. And it is still a symbol in Buddhism.

There are things out there that aren’t politicised, but if you are trying to make the rainbow into a symbol of hetero-marriage then you are also politicising it.

If you were using it for a child’s birthday party on invites, no one would bat an eyelid.

We have our symbols that mean a lot to us. We should keep using them and not trying to re-brand with other group’s associations—that can be considered oppressive, especially if we are just politicising them as well.

Well, part of the Catholic Church already does - Cursillo!

Cursillo predates “Gay” use of the rainbow by a long shot. It originated on the island of Mallorca following the Spanish Civil War and WWII.

It came to the US in 1957, brought by 2 military pilots from Spain. They were in Texas for training.

I don’t see what the big deal is. I’ve been seeing rainbows on Catholic stuff since I was a child. Often they are used to symbolize God’s love, life after death, or simply because young children think a rainbow is pretty and so it gets used on their banners and stuff.

The “rainbow flag” is a gay symbol, but rainbows in general, or rainbow colors in general, are not automatically considered gay. They’re just considered pretty or natural.

There is no reason for Catholics not to use a rainbow in their art or on their t-shirts or whatever, but there is also no reason for Catholics to politicize the symbol as a way of “taking it back”. To the extent a rainbow symbolizes the diversity of mankind, we already welcome that into our church.

All Covenants, new and old, are binding. God will never break any of them.

It’s a huge deal here where the rainbow has been appropriated by the say yes to same sex marriage.

Take back the rainbow for God!
