Let’s have the rainbow 🌈 as a Catholic symbol!

That Papal Tiara seems different than the one that hangs in my room…

The gays? Are you for real? You do realise gay is not a noun?
Do you realise ‘real’ is an adjective and cannot take the preposition ‘for’? Language changes. This horse bolted so long ago that the stable has been renovated into an Air B&B.

Let’s give it back a substantial and holier meaning.

The devil is out to destroy marriage.

He’s out to destroy our unique and complementary dignity as men or women.

He’s out to destroy the true meaning of joy by offering falsehoods.

The word gay has been distorted.

The concept of marriage has been distorted.

The meaning of male and masculinity and female and femininity has been degraded.

Would ‘sodomites’ be better?

Maybe ‘gay activists’ might be better?

There is no reason for Catholics not to use a rainbow in their art or on their t-shirts or whatever, but there is also no reason for Catholics to politicize the symbol as a way of “taking it back”. To the extent a rainbow symbolizes the diversity of mankind, we already welcome that into our church.
I was waiting for your sensible sage opinion and here it is!

I guess I’m happy the way it is now provided it doesn’t get any worse. I just don’t want to see one day when kids “can’t” use the rainbow for the parties.

Great idea. Then you can allienate gay people even further from the Church. What a wonderful way to keep your Church free of such vile. Way to go!!!

It’s doubtful. So how about not using sodomite? There are gay members here and it’s really coarse and dehumanizing.

That will happen about the same time as St. Patrick’s Day shirts and cartoons can’t show a leprechaun finding a pot o’ gold at the end of a rainbow.

And as someone else said, Cursillo was using “De colores” for years before it got associated with gay rights.

You proved my ongoing point.

We are not welcoming. In what language is that welcoming or Christlike?

I propose the Catholic Chuuch should adopt this as a symbol for the wonderful creation by God
Its already being used elsewhere, and the viewers might get a wrong idea.

Once something is established for another use, and you repossess it, its tough to communicate the new meaning.

Example given, the swastika is traditionally an Indian sign of good luck and prosperity. But if I were opening an Indian restaurant, I probably wouldn’t want to use the symbol no matter how appropriate. A lot of people might get the wrong idea, so its just easier to find something else.

The swastika is an extreme case. Because of its association with the Nazis, it’s even banned from a number of countries. You don’t see businesses naming themselves after swastikas, or small children being given swastika toys to play with. Swastikas also do not occur in nature.

Rainbows, on the other hand, are used in dozens of contexts. There’s “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, Rainbow Brite the doll, rainbow Care Bears and My Little Ponys, rainbows that leprechauns find pots o’ gold at the end of, Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in my hometown that has been there forever, dozens of rainbow toys for children, greeting cards with rainbows, , and rainbows unlike swastikas naturally appear after rainstorms.

Is sodomite really an offensive term because I didn’t know that?

Maybe we should use slightly different shades of color to differentiate from the more popular version?
I also heard that the rainbow was a type of Mary.
“And he that sat, was to the sight like the jasper and the sardine stone; and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.” Revelation 4:3

I was just reading an article about US Postal Service “love stamp” designs over the years. Two designs prominently feature rainbow colors. These stamps were issued in 1984 and 1985, at which time the rainbow flag was recognized as a gay emblem at least in San Francisco, but not across the country, to my knowledge. Enjoy!

Reclaim it! What’s to stop us?
To properly reclaim it, it would need to be done by ALL Christians (if not Jews too) and not just Catholics.

Otherwise, it will be twisted out of context by both the far left and far right

A fornicator at least is performing a natural act, though sinful.

A fornicator and a sodomite aren’t to be equated.
