Liberal Catholics pushing changes in the church to gather in Detroit

Copy of letter sent Friday by Archbishop of Detroit Allen Vigneron warning priests and deacons to stay away from a liberal conference in Detroit held by the American Catholic Council. If priests attend the Council’s Sunday mass, they could be defrocked, Vigneon writes.

My dear brother priests and deacons,

As you may be aware, a group calling itself the American Catholic Council will be meeting at Cobo Hall on the weekend of June 11 and 12. Despite my attempts to engage in a dialogue with them about this planned event, the organizers of this conference have not replied to me directly. I have a number of concerns about this event and caution any Catholic against participating for reasons expressed already in previous communications sent by the Archdiocese.

Of particular concern is the “Eucharistic Liturgy,” noted on the schedule for this conference on Pentecost Sunday, June 12. The Fathers of the Second Vatican Council instruct us, “Every legitimate celebration of the Eucharist is regulated by the bishop, to whom is committed the office of offering the worship of the Christian religion to the divine Majesty and of administering it in accordance with the Lord’s commandments and with the Church’s laws, as further defined by his particular judgment for his diocese.” (Lumen Gentium, 26). I take my role as moderator of the liturgy for the archdiocese (Sacrosanctum Concilium, 22) very seriously. To confirm the legitimacy of what they had planned, the ACC had been asked to provide details regarding this liturgy. The response received was ambiguous, and there are good reasons for believing forbidden concelebration will take place by the laity and with those not in full communion with the Church.

In order to fulfill my responsibilities, so clearly enunciated by the Second Vatican Council, of fostering of communion with both the local and the universal Church, I am compelled to caution any priests or deacons who may be considering participation in this liturgy. It is not being celebrated with my permission as required by the law and the good order of the People of God. Further, clergy should be aware of the impact of forbidden concelebration with those who are not in full communion (canons 908 and 1365). This is a serious delict, for which recourse to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith is required, and which may result in dismissal from the clerical state (cf. Sacramentorum Sanctitatis Tutela, 2001 and 2010).

I ask that you pray with me for the unity of the Church. As we commemorate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and the Blessed Virgin in this upcoming Solemnity, may the Holy Spirit come afresh on all of us, keeping us united in the love of God and keeping our attention and energies focused on the task of sharing Christ in and through His Church.

I hope and pray that this will not give further scandal to the Church and Catholics who are faithful to Her teachings.
 
This is the work of heterodox NOT “liberal” Catholics who are trying to create a church in their own image.There are only two kinds of Catholics-orthodox and heterodox-there are no conservative nor liberal Catholics.If they are not willing to submit to the teachings of the Church they should leave-they are protestants already.
This and heretical rebellious clergy constitute the"smoke of Satan",which the late Holy Father Pope Paul VI said had entered the Church.
 
I note that the Archbishop has warned that any priest in attendance may be defrocked-this is serious stuff.
 
Let em gather on the sand, and add to the spiritual noise pollution. The Church built on the Rock wont cave in to them.
They show their true colours by having such tired old parasite speakers as H Kung, J Chittister and M Fox.

They`re like fleas and mosquitoes and other annoying insects.

Thank you for this post. I certainly agree. These folks can’t be considered “liberal” catholics when they can’t be considered Catholics. Catholics are united in faith with their bishop and with the Holy Father in Rome.

I think Archbishop Vigneron’s statement was more limited, but equally serious He warns that if any priest engages in illicit concelebration at the conference, he faces being defrocked.

Back in October, the archdiocese issued a statement saying that they discouraged any Catholics from attending the conference, which is not backed by the archdiocese or any body of the universal Roman Catholic Church. The conference goals were said to be “largely in opposition to the teachings of the Second Vatican Council and the Holy Spirit, which inspired the Council.” The archdiocese asked the organization to cancel the conference.

I am glad the Archbishop has spoken up in a public manner.

I completely support what he has has to say on that matter too.

It’s really nice to see how few places these groups have left to turn. 20 years ago, they’d have had their pick of locations where they could do this stuff with relative impunity. Whaddya know, maybe things ARE getting better? 😉

Bless the Archbishop for being a true shepherd and guiding his flock aright! Would that all our spiritual leaders were like him…
 
I live in the Archdiocese of Detroit. We are all very proud of our Shepard Archbishop Vigneron! I am especially pleased that he has taken a public stand on this group of dissents. We need more church leaders who clarify things for the flock. He is a very active archbishop and supports and attends the many,many events in the archdiocese that are faithful to church teachings.
I will be attending “Call to Holiness” tomorrow where we pray for the dissents and have such wonderful speakers as: Jeff Cavins; Fr. Clement Machado, Paul Rondeau; Al Kresta: Fr. McCaffrey and Raymond de Souza.
I have attended this conference for the past several years and have always gotten a lot out of it. I only found out this year that it was started in response to a “Call To Action” conference held in Detroit in about 1996.
Does anyone know if these dissenters have held a conference every year? ( They go by many names…Call to Action was changed to American Catholic Conference)

Maybe unless more liberals decide they have had enough. And the pews become even less full, more stop attending Mass, or start attending what are called ecclesial communities, and if they carry their time, talents, and wallets and purses with them.

Let them go.The Holy Father himself said we need a smaller but more orthodox Church.They won’t be missed.We’ll even deconsecrate a few Churches for them.

Yes I know the Holy Father said something along those lines. Jesus on the other hand I just myself can’t help but wonder whether He wants a smaller Church of saints, closed off to sinners, or if He would not turn away anyone who comes to Him. In Jn 6:37 I believe He said something about the latter.

And no. “Time and talents” I meant as words for the work they do in parishes, servng in various roles, and in the good work they do in serving the poor, leading clothing and food drives, running soup kitchens and such in those parishes that have them. So you lose those talents along with the financial support they give to aid the Church in her various works of charity. But if the Church thinks less people can make up the slack, and that Jesus would approve, then I guess the Church can go for it and give it a try. And I guess the Church can see whether or not then, if or how much they are missed.
