I am divorced, received an annulment, and remarried again. I have 3 children of my own and my husband has custody of his daughter. My husband and I dated for almost 5 years before getting married. At the same time my husband and I started dating I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. I had to undergo radiation and chemotherapy. About a year before we were to get married, I left him move in with me so that we could save up to get married. This upset my parents greatly. They did not care for him.

I was sick and tired all the time from the treatments that I was undergoing. He understood but he didn’t. I was still working full-time. We got a computer at this time to help get some of the wedding stuff done. I didn’t find out until after we had married what was going on. I was so busy with preparing for the wedding (which I basically did everything myself), working and taking care of the kids, house, work, and taking care of me as far as my treatments. There were issues with my husband hitting his daughter, pushing or grabbing her.

Shortly after we got married, he started surfing the Internet in our dining room when our kids were in the living room. He would tell them to say in the room. When he first started to do this, I said to him you do not need to be on stuff like that especially with the kids in the other room. He said all men do this. NO, they don’t! He said I have looked at porn magazines, DVD, and have sent a lot of time at the strip clubs for a long time. This is the first that I found out he did this. At this point, I was too tired and sick to fight about this. So it was left go. I did find where he had quite a few magazines and DVD in our basement. What he did then was he would wait till I went to bed or after we had our sexual activity he would say I am going down stairs to watch TV or get a drink. One night I kept myself up and waited for a while before going down stairs. He gets on the computer or goes down stairs to watch his movies and look at his books to masturbate even after we had our sexual activity. I caught him. He was so furious with me. I said to him. You need to get help. He said I am a typical man. I said NO you are not. This has gone on for years.

He got caught stealing at his part time job. He lost his full time job. We were having problems due to the use of the porn use etc. He went to court. He started seeing a counselor. I couldn’t believe he did this. He found another job. The counselor wanted to see me as well for couple’s therapy. My husband would tell the counselor what he wanted to hear so when I spoke the truth he would lie about it. I started tracking him to get evidence. I showed the counselor but I would not let him show my husband the evidence. He would bring it up and he would say no he is not but he was. Child and Youth came into our home to investigate us due to him surfing the Internet and the kids seeing and knowing he was on those sites. He would save it on our home computer and the kids had access to it. We told the truth but somehow he lied to them and there was nothing filed against him. I didn’t know he had stuff at the house again. He told me he got rid of all of it. I was so stupid. He has a bunch at the house still. He stopped at that point looking at the magazines, DVDs, and surfing the Internet at home for a short time. He had a job of driving truck. He was stopping at those adult stores and buying magazines and DVDs. He then started looking on the Internet again. He would save the girls pictures on cds. He had several accounts with some of the sites. He started talking with the girls. He would make sexual comments to them and at one point; he was going to meet someone at a local club. He didn’t know that I knew any of this and still till this day he doesn’t know that I know he has the porn materials and that he surfs the Internet still. I couldn’t/can’t understand why he was doing this. He was getting his sexual activity almost every night.

The counselor dismissed us and said we need to make a promise to each other. I kept up to my promise to my husband but my husband has not kept to his and that was not to look at the porn materials or chat with the girls. He doesn’t chat with the girls but he still views the material and watch the DVD. He downloads porn on the computer. The kids have been exposed to this for a long time and they don’t understand. He says that I am not letting him be a man that I am treating him as a child. That is not the case. He gets sex 5-6 times a week. So, I don’t understand why he needs to. He doesn’t respect me. There is so much more.

My youngest just saw him on the computer looking at porn sites Monday. She is angry/ upset and doesn’t understand. My oldest is the same way. My son moved out of my home due to my husband. I believe my husband has a problem. We do not have the same values or morals. Everything he stands for goes against what I believe and how I was brought up. I have been trying to get out of this situation for about year and for some reason I won’t leave. I am scared and fear him. He has a temper. He has thrown things at me but missed me (pots, silverware, tools, wood etc) when I speak my peace. I lost my son due to my husband. My girls are not happy and neither am I. One of my daughters and myself are suffering from depression due to everything. She is in counseling and I will be starting in the week or so. Just yesterday my oldest daughter said to me, mom you are not happy. Why are we still here? I said I don’t know. She said that her and her sister would do what ever it is that needs to be done as long as you are happy. Him looking at the porn materials bothers them and they see it sometimes whether he knows they do or night.

Sorry for writing such a large post. I want to make sure that I am thinking right. I need your help and advice.

Did writing this post help you sort through all of this? You were very clear in everything you wrote. What is going on is not acceptable. It is harming your children whom God has entrusted to you and you are afraid of him. What do you need to do? You need to make a plan and take action to get out as soon as possible. Please contact a domestic violence center because they can help you with a plan. 1−800−799−SAFE(7233)

It sounds like you have been through this before. It is tempting to feel defeated or too ashamed to act. It is imperative that you act though. Go to confession. Ask our mother Mary to give you the strength to take this on. Contact your family for advice and support and be willing to tell them that they were right and you were wrong. Don’t remain in this situation…and don’t go into another one. This is a cycle that tends to repeat and repeat and you need to understand it. Contact the DV center, get help, and get counseling.

Heather,

I am so sorry to hear what you are going through. You need to take your kids and get out of this situation. These children need to be protected from this. You need to be protected and respected. I know it can be hard to leave, but I believe that you have the strength to do it. Pray a lot. Pray for strength and wisdom.

So this is with your current husband? I would think you could get another annulment if he was doing this before you were married and you had no idea.

I will be praying for you and your situation.

I agree with the above posters. You owe it to yourself and the children to separate from this man. He is harming you, and it sounds like he is abusive to the children. Do everyone a favor and get out of that situation as soon as you can.

Heather–please heed this advice. Prayers for you.

Get your kids and get out. Call your priest, return to the Sacraments and reconcile with your parents (of COURSE they do not approve, they do not want a chronic sinner, abuser with the people they love!)

He is not normal, it is time to flee.

You deserve so much better than this my dear sister.😦
You are in my prayers…

Heather:

I am sorry but after reading your post I feel the need to bleach my eyeballs because he is so absolutely vile.

Not only does he seem to relish porn but he is physically abusive to his daughter and your children do not need to be around this creep. Does DSS know about this stuff that is going on?

You have already lost your son because of this creep do not allow him to drive away your other children too.

Why are you still there? Do you have a job or some way to support yourself ? I know you would like me to say, “Oh things will get better”. They won’t he is a sicko and you and the kids are in danger. Please seek help and fast and DO NOT tell him.

I am so very sorry your life is this way. He is terrorizing you and the kids. Please seek help and DO NOT trust him.

She said that her and her sister would do what ever it is that needs to be done as long as you are happy.
but it’s not up to them to do whatever it takes. it’s up to you. gather real people to be your God-on-earth human resources. get their help. get out.

stay gone. don’t ever go back to him.

and stay single. your partner-picker is very very broken.

“Did writing this post help you sort through all of this?”

NO not really. What I had typed was just a small part of what is all going on with me. There is so much more.

“Please contact a domestic violence center because they can help you with a plan. 1−800−799−SAFE(7233)”

He has not physically hurt me but when he moved in there was a little bit with his daughter and that came to an end because I wasn’t going to tolerate it. He has recently only threw things at me but it misses me. Please explain why you think I need to call DV?

I want to help myself and my daughters but I also fear leaving him due to his daughter. He has custody of his daughter and I don’t know what to do regarding this.

Would I be selfish to only think of myself and my two daughters at this point?

This is my current husband that I am having problems with. In one aspect he is a good man but he has all of these issues.

reconcile with your parents (of COURSE they do not approve, they do not want a chronic sinner, abuser with the people they love!)

How can I reconcile with my parents when they are part of the problem? They have hurt me in so many ways. They have taking me to court to get custody of my children. They talked my 18 year old son to move into their house. There is just so much that they have done.

Why are you still there? Do you have a job or some way to support yourself ?
The only thing I can think of is that I am scared. I have been through this once already and worry about what people will think of me. I do have a job but I worry about being on my own with the way economy is and everything. Everything is so expensive. I also worry about having to pay spousal support because I make more money then he does.

and stay single. your partner-picker is very very broken.
I know that the decision is mine. I would never put that on my daughters. I am a good hearted person and I try to help everyone. The problem is that their true colors never come out until it is to late. I guess I have made choices with my partners because of that. For some reason, I tend to be attracted to men who have issues and I feel I need to help them get through it. I know that you can’t change anyone if they don’t want to change but the problem here is that I change to accomodate them and that is where I am wrong.

If my grandchildren were living with an abusive porn wallower, I’d fight tooth and nail to get them out of there. Your parents are acting in your children’s best interest - they likely feel they can do nothing to save you from this man - they CAN get the kids out of there.

Please please PLEASE, get to your priest today for counseling!

Heather,

I believe that you are a good hearted person. This situation is always a hard one, but you cannot stay in the situation because you worry about what people will think or whatever. You said your parents are part of the problem. I know it can feel that way when they tried to take your kids. But they were trying to protect the children. They can tell you what they think, which I’m sure they have, but you are an adult and have to make decisions for yourself. I know it might me hard to see how taking your kids away from you is helping. I’m sure you probably were very offended. You probably felt like they think you are not a good parent, etc. You probably asked yourself, “how can they do this to me?”. But if you could take yourself out of the situation, step back and look at things, you would probably realize they don’t think you are a bad parent but they probably think you feel too trapped to get the kids out. Which is true, based on your last few posts.

Don’t worry about the money. Talk to your priest. I’m sure he will have resources to help you out. I’m sure your parents would be so glad if you left they will help out as much as they can. Money is not the problem here, so staying because you are worried about money is not the answer. Especially if you make more money than he does.

It is not your job to help these guys with their issues. A wife or girlfriend is not going to be as affective as a counselor which is what he needs. Even if the wife or girlfriend is more qualified than the counselor. Its like when I teenage is more receptive to advice from a friend than his or her parents. This is nothing against you. Like you said, you are a good hearted person.

But in this situation, you kids have to come first! By being around your husband they will grow up to think that this is normal behavior for a man. Its NOT. You don’t want your kids to go through the same thing later, right? Get them to counseling. Get yourself to counseling. If you husband will go, get him to counseling. And pray, a lot.
I will continue to pray for you and your kids.
Think about this stuff hard.
People care about you. Your parents care about you.

What you are reporting IS a domestic violence situation. Please contact the Domestic Violence hotline and they can help you work out a plan for everybody.

It sounds like you are in agreement with your parents that your household, with your husband in it, is not a safe place for you or your children. Remember, they love you like you love your children and it sounds like they have been willing to move mountains to ensure the safety of everyone. Until now, you have stood in the way of helping your children. Do not let shame stop you from doing what is right: protecting your children and reconciling with your family.

In an abusive relationship, the abuser will try to alienate his victim (in this case his wife) from those who love and support her. You have probably been conditioned by him for years to believe that your parents, and not him, are the real problem. This is why you are really going to need counseling to untangle this whole mess.

Heather:

I can’t wait to see what your Priest has told you about this “marriage”. I’m sure that is exactly where you are right now as I type this. So, I’ll check back later after you return from speaking with your Priest.

Do you honestly believe it is ok and not abusive for him to throw things at you?
Do you honestly believe it is ok because he misses when he throws stuff at you?
Do you honestly believe it is ok to raise children/teens in a house where things are being hurled at their Mother, there is porn on the computer, and porn in the house?

God Bless your parents for at least removing one of your children from this porn/abusive house and hopefully they will succeed in having the others removed too because you are not able to stand up for yourself. You are afraid of him. He is the terror in the house. You have been beaten down emotionally/physically/mentally This is exactly how and why children and also animals become the targets of the abuser because the other adult in the house is too occupied with shaking in her boots. He is allowed.

Your afraid of having to pay spousal support? Heres how you can that:

Next time he starts to feel a little froggie, pick up the phone and call 911. Have his happy little hiney arrested for domestic violence and spousal abuse AND see it through. Go to the magistrates office and issue a warrent and continue to criminal court and have him convicted of the above. Pick your backbone up off the floor and put the screws to this creep. You have to save yourself and your children and for God’s sake please don’t try to find another man to rescue you. YOU are the rescurer, you have children to protect.

Dear Heather,

My heart goes out to you, your children, and on a much different plane, your husband.

I’ve often thought to myself, that in the course of my 64 plus years here on earth, it has never crossed my mind that I hated anyone. Yet there is one that I do hate. Not just anyone, but the one who arrogantly raised himself up against the One Holy God, and forever (speaking in terms of time, not eternity) sealed the fate of all mankind, through that one, insidiously evil act of temptation in the garden.

I spent most of my life in and out of pornographic addiction, and it was those around me, those who depended upon me, who suffered the most. I state this to establish a platform from which to offer advice.

First of all you must pray, pray your very heart out, and submit all to the intercession of Mary. I prayed every-which-way-but-loose as an evangelical for years and years for some deliverance from this problem. It wasn’t until I came home to the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church and began to invoke the intercession of May and the Saints, that real concrete help came to me.

Secondly you must ask God to prepare your heart in order that you may confront your husband in a non-compromising way and deliver to him an ultimatum. Until Christ becomes the center of his (your husband’s) desire of desires, he will be a slave to his addiction and everyone around him will suffer. Only God can fill the vacuum that is currently occupied by this evil that plagues your family.

Thirdly you must gather up all your courage and by faith, like St. Paul declare in your heart of hearts, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Phl. 4:13, and having said that take the first step in faith, and trust God who is ALL MIGHTY, to roll back the flood waters.

I will pray for you and your family daily.
