OP do you go shopping with your mom ever, to save time. since you live at the same home? You should pick up a big bottle of lube while out shopping with her and make sure she sees it. Maybe if they feel their “measures” are failing anyways they’ll put you in the same room.

I find it funny that you say that, because I specifically used the word intercourse to make her parents uncomfortable so they can just get over it and get used to the idea.

I personally find euphemisms to be a sign of immaturity and squeamishness. There is nothing to be squeamish about over a married couple having sex.
Keep in mind, however, that not everything that is legitimate is legitimately made public. It is no violation of marriage to maintain that some pronouncements give Too Much Information for comfort. When it comes to parents and their children’s sex lives (or, let us face it, vice versa!) here is definitely such a thing as polite propriety. The taboo against incest is very deep, and it makes it gracious to let those who do not want to think about your marital privacy kept as free as possible to not think about it!

Maybe it is funny, but the closer someone is to you, the less they usually want to think about let alone hear about your sex life. 😃

It would be just a creepy if the father was not “uncomfortable” with this thought of his daughter and another man. But no matter the circumstances here, the parents are infringing on the rights of a married couple. The Church would most certainly side with the young couple here, in fact I would not be surprised if She has spoken about it.

oh wait.
She has in the CCC
Ironically enough in this situation it falls under the 4th commandment of honoring they father and mother. Which I cannot emphasize enough the irony here.😃

Bolding mine:

Here is the important part. No matter the comfortableness of a father, or the age of the marrieds, or the financial circumstances involved. It is against the marrieds DIGNITY to impose this. I shake my head sometimes at CAF and the debates we have:

Does God approve of sodomy? Can I abort in this circumstance? Can I contraception in this circumstance, and now, “Can I control my adult married daughter’s sex life?”

The uncomfortable factor of the parents is actually not really the issue here. As it is more uncomfortable to have to vocalize and enforce this rule on two married people. What this is most certainly about is parents (probably motivated by genuine concern and caring) trying to impose a sexual will on people they do not think should be having children at this time. While THAT issue could be debated, the right of the parents to decide this is pretty open and shut. It does not exist and should not be defended.
Whether you like it or not, people have a right to make rules for their homes for whatever reasons. Unless they are forcibly holding guests captive there, it is the place of those guests to leave if the rules don’t suit them. There is no case for holding either God or the law up as a threat to those rules and saying that it equates to incest is an unethical charge against them.

Not according to the Church. Parents do not have the right to decide when and where thier adult married children have sex. In fact, that freedom is specifically outlined.
Parents are allowed to make rules within their own homes for their comfort. If the adult children don’t like those rules, they are free to leave and make their way on their own.

Is that what they are trying to do? It could be that the bedrooms have thin walls and they don’t want to be kept up at night. I make the bed in our guest room super squeaky to discourage any hanky panky If the guests are going to engage in coitus it isn’t going to just be loud enough to keep me awake, I’ve made sure it is going to keep everyone in the house awake.

Also if they were accustomed to having sex in the living room are the parents allowed to say anything or is that deciding when and where their adlt married children have sex?

Laying on your sides keeps the bed from squeaking. I’m not trying to be graphic, just pointing out a flaw in your master-plan 😉

I would be very surprised if these parents ever once used the “S” word with their daughter and son-in-law. If I had to bet, I’d bet they do not want to be confronted with the fullness of the idea that their daughter has all the duties and privileges of a wife, now that she is married.

This should not be treated as a rational prohibition. They want to help out, but the idea of it becoming public knowledge that sex takes place under their roof may be more frankness than they can manage. This can be expected to continue until they have a grandchild. Either that, or they want to be very sure that this stay is as short as humanly possible, so THEY can go back to being comfortable having sex whenever they want and wherever they want in their own home again. Those are guesses from my experience.

OP, on second thought–just go talk to your mom in private about this. Then you’ll actually know what is going on with your parents. For all you know, they may assume that you will sleep together and are simply setting it up so you can have a tiff without the whole house knowing it. They may be pulling your leg and want to know how long you’ll put up with it. We can only guess, but she can really tell you. Being your same-gender parent, my guess is that she will be your best source of information. You’ll have a better sense of how frank you can be with her about the subject of your sex life than any of us! 👍

I’m curious as to how many of us are of the OP’s parents age with children of the OPs age?

I kind of identify with the parents in that I’d be thinking this could become an all to comfortable way out for a person who probably shouldn’t have got married so soon. If the daughter were to get pregnant which is the proper Catholic way… there’s even less chance that they will be on thier feet quickly… leaving Grandma and Grandad to be looking after not only their own child who isn’t making it in the world on their own two feet… but a new baby as well.

Also, is it really all that weird that we don’t want to listen to our children having sex in a nearby room? I know myself having been married 26 years and having visited my parents numerous times over those years… I’d rather just wait til we got back home so as not to make the uncomfortable situation of all the sex noises in the next room to my parents. I think of it as a respect thing.

I think it wise all around to get on your feet as soon as possible, OP, and move out. I would probably do a similar thing to your parents with my 21 year old ‘married but still dependent’ child.
I once was the parent of 21year olds, and while I thought it was young, there is no way I would ever ask of them what these parents ask if they needed a place to live. Never. I would consider it a sin against God and marriage. It is totally abnormal, nothing can justify interfering in a marriage to this extent. I believe this is a case of not wanting to relinquish control. I lived that nightmare once. This can lead to significant marital consequences down the road if it is not taken care of immediately.

Also if they were accustomed to having sex in the living room are the parents allowed to say anything or is that deciding when and where their adlt married children have sex?
The respect and power for governments comes under the same commandment (4th) as does parental rights in the CCC.

So, I assume you are fine with a government decreeing that anyone on government assistance not be allowed to sleep in the same bed.

My country, my rules! Right?

In the US we have this issue right now, would you support governments mandating Mexican refugees be separated from their families in government accommodations?

It always amuses me how people will back their positions to the ridiculous.

When it would be more correct to just say, well, the parents have overstepped their bounds here.

Despite what some here wish, parents cannot make any demand upon their children (adults mind you) that they wish just because it is their house, I could not demand my 20 year old daughter’s husband lick my bare feet every morning as a condition of shelter.

The parents are out of bounds, and it could possibly (but not necessarily) be something even more sinister.

Honestly? there are people here willing to say the parents are correct!?

No wonder we are getting our behinds kicked in the marriage debate, we don’t even understand what it is!

I agree with you here.

See Hoosier? I don’t always think you are wrong! 😃

It would be interesting if the OP could be adult enough to have a conversation with the parents to find out the motive behind this seemingly unjust condition of assistance. I would love an update. But perhaps the OP’s parents have internet access limited to the bathroom of the master bedroom for fear of some ideas the OP might get to be a wife…😃

Imagine the sheer emasculation of the poor husband here. Laid off, has to live with the in laws and now, refusal to sleep with his own wife. The parents are doing more harm than we can even imagine.

This will not end well. And it will not be the only problem this young couple has with these parents. Wait JUST wait until grandkids are in fact introduced. Provided, the young couple can sneak behind the bleachers long enough…

I jumped into the thread with my perspective on reading your assessment that these parents behaviour was incestuous. I think it is actually you who’ve overstepped the parameters of your knowledge and simple stranger etiquette that most respect when they don’t have intimate knowledge of the situation. I just thought incest is a most heinous thing to charge someone with.

God bless, I know about shelters, and most of them separate people by gender to ensure the safety of the women and children that are there by not having grown men sleeping in the same unprotected areas. No, it doesn’t kill anyone.

The parents are doing this not for safety reasons presumably, but for other reasons. Will it kill the married couple? Probably not.

Many things do not KILL a marriage immediately, but contribute to it’s slow decay. The Catholic Church in her Divine wisdom teaches that this couple should be having sex, and the parents are saying “no.” Sex is a beautiful gift from God and is bonding. The parents may also say “no hugging or kissing while you live here” it is no different.

Maybe they are not evil but they clearly are showing disregard for a Sacramental marriage.
Don’t you think the OP ought to just go to her mom and say, “Mom? Separate bedrooms? Really? I’d like to laugh, but I think you and Dad just might be serious. Please tell me that you aren’t serious…this is just not going to fly. I am married. You knew it when you said we could stay here. This is ridiculous. We will be moving out as soon as possible, we really do promise. Trust me.”

This couple ought to get themselves their own place ASAP, at any rate, no matter how tiny and unassuming a place they have to settle for. While they are at her parents, they ought to be the smallest blips on the radar they can be. In the meantime, the daughter does need to have a gracious, good-hearted, no-nonsense, heart-to-heart with her parents about the real duties and privileges of marriage.

This does not have to “create a permanent wound in the relationship between your husband and your parents”. That would be a choice, and a very unfortunate choice. In the relations between in-laws, there is no better policy than to be eager to overlook slights whenever possible and to be gracious about those that must be addressed directly. If the slights are meant, it foils them. If the slights are not meant, it shows compassion for the clumsiness of them.
Slights? Sure. Refusing to acknowledge that she is a married woman and that their son-in-law is their daugther’s wife??? That’s not a slight, that’s a huge problem. And if the OP chooses to humor this issue rather than confront it head on with the stance that she is her husband’s wife first and foremost (yes, that means before she is their daughter) and that she is not willing to compromise on this regardless of the living arrangement, she needs to be ready for this kind of behavior to continue for the rest of her parents’ lives (or the rest of her marriage, as these things tend to shorten marriages).

Nope. Not ok. Not at all. Not only are the parents in the wrong, the OP is in the wrong to allow her marriage to be disregarded like this and to allow her husband to be humiliated. No, this is not about emasculating her husband, it’s about respect. I can imagine that the OP would be pretty humiliated living with his parents under these conditions as well.

And as far as this ‘My house, My rules’ thing goes that LongingSoul is going on about, that’s fine. But the young couple has every right to take this into consideration throughout their lives. When grandbabies come along, do you really think that her parents will receive the same access and consideration that grandparents who actually acknowledge the children’s father as their mothers husband have? Do you think that her parents will ever be as warmly welcomed as his parents, or as they would have been if they had treated the marriage with respect from the beginning? Will the OP’s husband ever be able to honestly and fully welcome them? Can anyone honestly say that they even deserve to be?

When people come to marriage or relationship counselling or even come to divorce or family court with a situation that laid down on paper looks like its pretty black and white… it often gets turned on its head very quickly once the story starts to flow from the lips of each party. An accusation was laid on these parents of incest and from that point, I have jumped in to give another view. What has lead to this point and what the parents are feeling about the whole situation is an unknown to this story but at the end of the day, they have a right to make a rule in their own home. If they banned the couple from sex AT ALL, that is a different story… but this is all just about the sleeping arrangements within the walls of the home they live in for a short period while they get a job. If this couple feels so strongly entitled to sleep together in there parents house that they would use the children to punish them… that is their choice. It happens all the time where a parent doesn’t allow their child to smoke weed in the house or give them some money or take a driving penalty for them… so they punish the parent in some way. That’s an unfortunate choice some people make.

Did you really just compare a married adult’s need to live out a normal, private, and yes, conjugal relationship to a teenager who wants to smoke pot?

Here’s the deal, I’m married. My husband comes first. He will be the father of my children. If my parents rejected our marriage and tried to prevent me from being a wife, and prevent him from being a husband, they would be choosing to remove themselves from that kind of close relationship with us and our children. It’s a pretty strong statement to make about their marriage to force them to sleep apart, and it should not go unanswered. And trying to prevent sex? That can be extremely hard on a marriage, especially a new one.

They are acting completely out of selfishness, and they’re placing their discomfort with their married daughter’s sex life above marriage.

Tell me exactly how this is all justifiable?

I think that the couple should move out and live however they have to to stick together and honor their marriage.

They should tell her parents that they will open their lives to them again when her parents are ready to accept and respect that their daughter is married, as well as her husband’s place in her life.

Or for that matter, hear it. No one (including the OP) has said anything about the house, or to what degree there is sound proofing. For me, I don’t want to hear the bed springs bouncing, or the heavy breathing, or the moaning, screaming, shouting, or any other indications of sexual activity. Sorry, but I can sympathize with the parents.

Approving of the parents’ rule is a different matter. however, there seems to be a significant lack of understanding of the parents’ position on some posters part.

The matter can be resolved; hubby gets one or two jobs. Might make applying for whatever he desires difficult, but choices are there.
