Mass and displays of ?excessive piety

Except at the once monthly Latin Mass (where it’s right back to the 1950s) things are otherwise pretty ‘modern’ where I go. I’m the only one that receives communion on the tongue, as far as I know.

I feel self-conscious when bowing my head every time I pray the word Jesus (should be pray or hear). I don’t make a display of it. Only a few people do that these days from what I see in church.

However, I try not to think about things like that because it takes my mind off the Mass.

roveau, how can you possibly be self-conscious when you nod your head at the name of Jesus? This is not a practice that has gone out of style. And how does it take your mind away from the Mass. You should be contemplating, during Mass, the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Bible tells us that every knee shall bow at the name of Jesus.

Stop looking around to see what others are doing then you won’t feel self-conscious.

Actually, the rubrics call for us to bow our heads at the name of Jesus durng the Gloria and the Creed. We make a profound bow at the words of the Incarnation during the Creed.
