BBC commentator blamed this latest killing on the relatively easy availability of guns in the US. On Sky News, a British Criminology Prof (who’s a bit of celebrity there) said that since Dumblane in the UK (a mass murder in the 90s where a pedophile murdered a class room full of young children) their gun control laws have reduced such sprees in the UK, while Finland and Germany with similar laws to the US still have US-like problems in this regard.

Don’t read too much into people who act inappropriately. There is no way to ascertain what motivates their actions. There is a distinct possibility that this small group may actually be hecklers posing as supporters. What better way to disrespect the president and his supporters. Don’t think that either side of the political divide are beyond this type of action.
I think Obama made a commendable speech on the shootings. I think the reactions of some of the attendees were odd for the occasion and did not make sense, it deserves pointing out. This is beyond partisan politics

There are 300 million guns owned by civilians in the US, rarely do you hear of a tragedy as this

hunting rifles and shotguns are still completely legal in the UK, this psycho had no previous criminal record

so you take away the hand guns and change the appearance of the rifle, or maybe you have multiple shotguns…just as many dead in my opinion all other things being equal.

Shotguns are much more deadly than handguns.

Even if the US had UK style laws all the guy would have had to do was buy one from an illegal alien from the stash that Holder sold to the Mexican drug cartels.

Sky News Criminology Prof also said that people in Colorado are “frontier people” and they have a tendency to settle scores themselves with … guns.

Of course the US has 300mil people and UK only 60-odd and gun ownership in proportion of that is probably even higher - say more guns per capita than in the UK before Dumblane, so not sure how simplistic comparisons work. It would be interesting to know how bad gun crime in the UK is – although unarmed cops make it less necessary for (professional) criminals to have to resort to guns or deadly force themselves. Is this true, are there still cowboy attitudes over there?

Have there been many mass shootings which were aborted by armed would be victims though? I gather the media would give less attention to these.

What a maroon.

Eternal rest grant unto all the victims, o Lord. May they rest in peace. Please bring healing and peace to their families and friends.

Valid point. But we all know we can never prevent all crime. One could make it more difficult for criminals though (or psychos). High grade criminals such as those in the mafia are bound to have access to guns anyhow but perhaps fewer amateurs could cause harm?

I think it’s difficult to extrapolate from the UK to the US anyhow but British media like to do that anyhow.

UK has 14000 knife victims a year
In 2004, the National Academy of Sciences reviewed 253 journal articles, 99 books and 43 government publications evaluating 80 gun-control measures. Researchers could not identify a single regulation that reduced violent crime, suicide or accidents. A year earlier, the Centers for Disease Control reported on ammunition bans, restrictions on acquisition, waiting periods, registration, licensing, child access prevention and zero tolerance laws. CDC’s conclusion: There was no conclusive evidence that the laws reduced gun violence

Dude I kid you not. One can’t make this stuff up.
I do not want to turn this into a political thread in respect for the victims and their families, but I was deeply disappointed with those who tried to pin this on the Tea Party. Unbelievable.😦

Fair enough, but has the rate of knife crime gone up with the hand gun ban over there?

Would there not be more gun crime though.

Criminology Prof was incorrect then – but Murdoch’s channel gave him airtime.

Gun violence is overpoweringly more vicious than knife violence. Did anyone see how the Native Americans were slaughtered by the first Americans or any other formerly colonized country was subdued? GUNS. There isn’t a form of marital arts that can defend you against people with guns.

Warner Bros. pulls ‘Gangster Squad’ trailer over theater shooting scene
Warner Brothers Studios has pulled the trailer for “Gangster Squad” from movie theaters over a scene in which a group of gunmen emerge from behind a screen and open fire in a crowded theater, the Los Angeles Times reports
The studio, which also produced “The Dark Knight,” put out a statement after the shooting in Aurora, Colo. early Friday morning. “Warner Bros. is deeply saddened to learn about this shocking incident,” they said in the statement. “We extend our sincere sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims at this tragic time”
The trailer for “Gangster Squad” has been online and in theaters for months. The noir film about a group of Los Angeles police officers who attempt to take down crime boss Mickey Cohen stars Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin and Emma Stone. It is due to open Sept. 7 nationwide

That would be crazy, I agree. But didn’t they blame them when that governor was shot last year? Of course the Tea Party has connotations of the KKK for many people living abroad. (Which is even crazier).

I’m only mentioning what I heard because people abroad formulate their opinion based on what they see on CNN/BBC/Sky and Al Jazeera. It’s very unfortunate that such misinformation gets released.

The only people who would be deprived of guns with gun control are honest citizens. Criminals will still be able to get guns.

The distinction between “honest citizen” and “criminal” is debatable. In this country, 92% of the Tea Party are voting for Romney. 92% of blacks are voting for Obama. Tea Party people generally think the founding fathers were role models, despite slavery, rape, colonization, etc. Blacks generally see Obama as a role model despite his support for abortion and gay marriage. So one person’s criminal is another person’s hero.
