I would agree with that, for the most part. I’m okay with some limitations, but the UK is too strict. Regarding the other posts, people overseas do have a funny assumption about Americans and guns. When I lived/worked in the UK, there was a segment on TV showing people shooting automatic weapons for fun, and I had some interesting conversations with my co-workers the next day. They seemed to assume that every American walks around armed and dangerous. Many of us don’t own guns.
I don’t agree that gun laws are too strict in the UK - the fact that there were less than 70 gun homicides and that we have a very low homicide rate generally probably means that it is working for us.

As to your second point, we simply don’t identify with any of the reasons that people on this thread say that they own guns - the desire to own one does not exisit, and there is no fear that you are going to be attacked either by an individual or by a tyrannical governement. I thought I read that 40% of Americans owned guns.

I agree with you to an extent. It is clear that each country will have its own local context. Gun Crime is generally highest in much poorer countries and Mexico would fall in this category, but I was unaware about the situation in Switzerland until I read about it on this forum. But Switzerland has high gun owenership and low-crime wheras the US has high ownership and high gun crime. Personally, I’d much rather that both were low like they are here.

Good. Stay there then. 🤷

I actually toyed with the idea of acquiring a Druganov for my “arsenal”, but I am not a fan of the 7.62 x 54 Russian round. Ballistically, it is similar to the .30-06, but Eastern Bloc ammo is notorious for fouling barrels and misfiring and the lack of match grade ammunition, which I tend to use.

Oh I will. I have never visted the US and (you’ll be pleased to know) have no desire nor intention to.
Then what difference do our gun laws make to you since they will never affect you,If I may be so bold as to ask ? 🤷

I, on the other hand, would love to visit England again. Must be the renowned American friendliness. 🙂
Yes, we Americans are renowned. Some Canadian friends told me that they can almost always tell when visitors to their country are Americans - by the breadth of their rear ends! 😃

Hahahaha:D

Actually, Italians (in Italy) tell me that their favorite tourists are Americans, because we are easy going. Really.

Oh - they make no difference to me, whatsoever. Just a casual interest in trying to understand your high gun homicide rates, high general crime rates, high gun ownership and what are the motivators behind them. It’s also interesting to see how people react when these questions are asked.

I was also interested in what the Catholic Bishops had to say about gun control and have already posted in another thread so may as well do so here too:

We support the development of a coherent national handgun control policy that includes: a several day cooling-off period between the sale and possession; a ban on “Saturday Night Specials”; the registration of handguns; the licensing of handgun owners; and more effective controls regulating the manufacture, sale and importation of handguns. We recognize, however, that these individual steps will not completely eliminate the abuse of handguns. We believe that only prohibition of the importation, manufacture, sale, possession and use of handguns (with reasonable exceptions made for the police military, security guards and pistol clubs where guns would be kept on the premises under secure conditions) will provide a comprehensive response to handgun violence.

American gun owners are proud of those numbers, regardless of what foreigners think about them. And if you don’t like it, better you wear a bullet-proof vest when you’re around us. 🙂

Well, I hope there’s been sufficient proof for you in this thread that there is no correlation between legal gun ownership and crime rates.

I’m sure the Bishops (and most Catholics) want to see a nuclear free world. But I don’t think that will happen in my lifetime, either.

As long as criminals have guns, so will I thanks.

Actually I have been swayed - and don’t think the link is necessarily proven. I just think that some societies must inherently more violent than others and the US is sadly one of those places.

Despite efforts to focus on this tragic event, it appears that this thread is all about gun control. So be it. 👍
This is likely because under the headline, the OP inserted a poll about whether or not we need more gun control. 😉

That may be the case, but in our defense, our crime rates have been dropping (as more states are allowing concealed carry permits). 😉

Please Rich! This might start that idiotic who won the War of 1812 debate again. Of which, I’m embarrassed to say I was a part of. 🙂

And not because of improvements in policing techniques, as in NYC during the Giuliani and Bloomberg administrations?
Well, 20 oz. soda ownership is way down. 😃 Sorry, I couldn’t resist the temptation. One of my many faults.

I could get us really wrapped around the axle and start one of my world famous “What was the real reason for the US Civil War” battles. But the moderators have already informed me that this sort of activity is strongly frowned upon…😃
