Well, 20 oz. soda ownership is way down. 😃 Sorry, I couldn’t resist the temptation. One of my many faults.
Just had a bag of potato chips fried in all natural peanut oil without salt and a 16 oz diet coke. I am so glad I have Papa Bloomberg around to make sure I don’t make stupid health decisions.

LOL that’s certainly one of the more idiotic things that Bloomberg has proposed. What he doesn’t realize is that for many poor families, soda supplies an affordable form of carbohydrates, although not a healthy one. Of course the larger principle is that we don’t need a food police in a free society. But the cigarette ban in restaurants has worked out quite well.

Amazingly so. Grumbling about the ban didn’t last very long, and I’ve not been in a restaurant in the city where it appeared that patrons had to be asked not to light up.

Smoking is different. Second hand smoke offends alot of people and causes significant health problems for people with conditions like asthma, bronchitis, or COPD. AS I have maintained for a long time, your right to swing your arm around ends at my nose. If your smoke is harming me, you are violating my rights, and you don’t have a right to do that. I applaud smoking bans. Smoking is a patently stupid habit anyway.

I quit cold turkey 16 years ago with very similar thinking.
I’ve never smoked in my life; my Dad did. One day, his doctor said that he needed to stop smoking. He stopped that very hour, and never smoked again for the remaining 25 years of his life. Like you - cold turkey!

I’m quitting as a part time (2 packs a week or so) smoker now. It isn’t easy on the family, that’s for sure.

Technically speaking, New Orleans was after the War of 1812 because it occurred *after *the treaty.

I suspect next you’re going to tell me they really didn’t shove gunpowder up the rear ends of alligators and use them as weapons???

My heart goes out to the families of the victims of this senseless shooting.

However, gun control isn’t about the guns. It’s about control.

And, in the words of Ronald Reagan: “You won’t get gun control by disarming law-abiding citizens. There’s only one way to get real gun control: Disarm the thugs and the criminals, lock them up and if you don’t actually throw away the key, at least lose it for a long time… It’s a nasty truth, but those who seek to inflict harm are not fazed by gun controllers. I happen to know this from personal experience.”

And gun control preventing shootings massacres, like the one experienced in Colorado? Please explain how criminals and murders obey laws. 🤷

Same thing applies to drinking. if you are an alcoholic you cant cut down. you have to stop cold turkey. I did this 26 years ago.

How many modern “western” nations were taken over by tyrannical governments in the 20th century? Pretty all the nations in Europe except England, Switzerland and Norway. Many of the “modernized” nations and most of the backward nations of Africa, A few in Central America, a few in South America, several in SE Asia and much of Eastern Asia.

Why is it it paranoid to think what has happened to much of the world will happen to North America?
If you mean Nazism, they got Norway, too. Did you mean Sweden?

Yes, we Americans are renowned. Some Canadian friends told me that they can almost always tell when visitors to their country are Americans - by the breadth of their rear ends! 😃
Usually they’re the ones who makes a comment about the money (I’m sorry America, but your money is boring. Our money is cool, colourful, and even high-tech, we get it, you’re impressed ;)).

If anyone’s interested in a quick read, Cracked has an interesting article. They do raise some interesting points.

It’s called the loonie and you have the Queen of England on your banknotes.

The dollar is recognizable worldwide. Show your $20 bill to someone and they’ll think it’s a pound.

Actually, that is false. Of the bills, only the $20 has the Queen on it (and that is the Queen of Canada, thank you very much). The rest of the bills have had Prime Ministers on them since the 70s.

The coins all have the Queen, but the portrait is updated every once in a while (same with the portraits on the bills). Also, we have special issue quarters a lot (I still lol at the American official who thought he was bugged because he picked up a poppy quarter) and loonies once in a while.

Remind me why you guys haven’t switched to the more efficient and cost-effect dollar coin yet?

And just who is the queen? How is she different from the Queen of Australia? Queen of England?

Don’t answer, it’s a rhetorical.

And this changes the fact that the Queen is on your currency…how?

We tried implementing the dollar coin at various times (Both silver and gold coins), but people didn’t like them.

Same reason why the half dollar is not used.
