Hi. I have always been committed to waiting until marriage for sex, but I have struggled enormously with masturbation. I also, maybe in an attempt to justify my habit, seriously considered becoming a Protestant a few months ago. However, the more and more I learned, the more and more I realized that the Catholic Church is the “True Church,” if you will. Anyway, I have gone to Confession and talked to my priest about this and what he said was fascinating; he told me to first and foremost get it to the point where the masturbation doesn’t control me. Then suggested I exercise, eat properly, and get good rest. That struck me as interesting, because the only one of the those three things I do is exercise; I play football. But because of a tremendous amount of schoolwork I get 4-6 hours of sleep a night Mon-Fri. My eating habits are also less than stellar. So what he said really encouraged me; does anyone here have any other suggestions? How can I overcome this? My first instinct was just to stop–cold turkey, if you will; I last just a week, and then I couldn’t take it any longer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You are experiencing the temptation of maturing hormones and you know that to engage in masturbation is wrong. To be chaste is a virtue and you are not allowing yourself the opportunity to be virtuous… Instant gratification… and what’s left? You can’t reclaim it…but you can stop it. I agree with your priest, make sure your physical biological needs (diet, exercise, and rest) are at least a B grade…work for an A. I’ll be praying for you.

I’m not convinced that priests have all the answers when it comes to sexual matters.

In fact, I would like to know where they derive their authority on such matters considering the obvious shortcomings their egregious misunderstandings have wrought on the Church.

Why would you need convincing? They ARE humans. Did you think they were pods?

Probably experience. Yeah. Once again, they’re human beings and have stuff down there:rolleyes:
considering the obvious shortcomings their egregious misunderstandings have wrought on the Church.
Feel free to http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/editor/insertorderedlist.gif them.

Probably experience?

No sex education then?

And as far as shortcomings regarding their socio-sexual understanding, the priest/pederast scandal is the gift that seems to keep on giving.

How many billions of dollars do you think are going to have to come out of the collection plates for that?

The topic of this thread is actually:

It is not about Priests or scandals or anything else. Remain on topic or open another thread. These off topic posts will self destruct in about 2 minutes. (UPDATE: Done)

The first thing is you need to get your mind reewed like the bible says , with thinking on good thing and get the word of God to set you free. It might be an inmpossible job being a Catholic because you don’t have the word of God as your medicine , or healing faith book to be set free. I would say find a bible led church and get counciling from a spiritual Holy Ghos filled professional doctor in that area , but really the bible will and can heal you and set you free.
I havd the same problems for years until I use my faith with the Written Word of God.
If you have not Word of God you have nothing to put your faith with.
So if you think a church or religion , priest, and false prayers will help you , you willl see yourself going around the same merry-go -round, and the devil keeping you into condemnations.
If you really want to be free I think , and better to say I know I can help you be free , biblically and spiritually, and also it might cause you to lose you belief in catholicism.
So it is your choice my brother religion is be free.
Keep sinning or find the the truth and the way , and life in the will of Jesus , which one do you want???

Let me know ASAP!

God Bless you.

PS. I think when you make this choice we need to go and talk on the pm or e-mails.because alot I will say will be against the Catholic church beliefs, but the thinks I help you with will all work for you I promises that , Catholicism Can’t.

“Well, at least we don’t walk around outside our church carrying palms!!!"

Like Father Larry Richards says on his CD “confession”, When the young man came into the confessional, the priest asked him “Do you entertain any sexual thoughts?” the young man replied,” No father, they entertain me!”
You might have to do something to remind yourself that when you have the desire to masturbate, you need to focus your attention on something else. You might try to wear a rubber band around you wrist to remind you. Make a promise that when you get these desires, snap that rubber band, then keep a bible around, that you can pick up and read, maybe make a commitment to read one the books of the Bible, instead of being impure with yourself, every time you get this desire, snap your self and read a chapter of that book. If the desires are really strong, you might just read the Bible all the way through very quickly.

I wouldn’t go to a Protestant church just because they might not view masturbation as a sin, you need to choose a church because you want to worship God. Despite what others might say, the Catholic Church is the church Jesus established, every other Christian church has broken off from it. I am not making this up, history will back me up on this, while all the Protestant churches have many truths, the Catholic Church has the fullness of the truth.
If you don’t believe the Catholic Church is true, then don’t join it, but if you do, then don’t let anyone sway you with their false teachings about what is true.
If you are feeling guilty because of your masturbation problem, that is because you have a conscience, this is a good, thing, you might struggle with it, but God knows that you are human, and loves you. We all have concupiscence, which is the desire to sin. No matter what church you go to you will struggle with this, But God desires you to choose him, and we do that by loving him, and we love him by our Prayers, and Loving others.

BigDL75,
I’ve had the same problem myself. It’s not an easy thing to overcome. I might suggest that you meditate on this problem.
Also, when you start feeling like you want to, find something else to focus on.
I’ve started saying the following prayer when my mind goes to such things:

Vade retro Satana! Nunquam suade mihi vana! Sunt mala quae libas. Ipse venena bibas!
(Begone Satan! Never tempt me with your vanities! What you offer me is evil. Drink the poison yourself!)

I find that this helps me focus on God rather than my physical wants.
The acronym for this prayer (in latin) is stamped along the outer rim of the Medal of St. Benedict. I find the prayer strangely appropriate for the problem.

God bless you,
Penitant

I was responding to his problem, I gave his ideas of how do deal with it, I also have had that same problem, and it worked for me. In the rest of my post, I was making reference to the poster before me who was telling him not to join the catholic church, BigDL75 had written in his post, that he thought that the Catholic church was the true church, I was telling him that he then should seek the church if he thought that it was true and not be persuaded by others to seek a different denomination.
I apologize that I did go overboard with my comments about the previous poster, but I get upset when people speak about my church that way.

RunandSew, I think (at least I hope) that Penitent just linked to the wrong post. I have a feeling that Evangelist’s post is what offended him (and rightly so IMO) and he accidentally quoted yours.

Your advice BTW is very good on this case. If I had followed this practice when I was younger, I’d be on my 15th reading of the entire Bible!!!

Seeing as how masturbation comes from the flesh you should probably make sure your other biological needs are met. I think your priests advice was pretty good, but what has really been helping me is prayer.

Try daily mass, liturgy of the hours, or an hour of adoration before the blessed sacrament every day. Just whatever it is make it more than just a quick hi God, bye God, and do it daily.
Genesis 4:6-7:
So the LORD said to Cain: “Why are you so resentful and crestfallen?
If you do well, you can hold up your head; but if not, sin is a demon lurking at the door: his urge is toward you, yet you can be his master.”

I’d recommend self-flagellation, but that could be taken the wrong way.

I read somewhere that Spanish monks used smoking to help get rid of sexual urges. Scientists today have done studies and found that nicotine reduces sexual urges. I really do not recommend smoking, but you can if you want (if you are at legal age). Maybe you can use the pactches or the gum. God speed.

Dear Friend,
I have had that same problem too. I had it for 30 years before becoming Catholic, and ONLY the Grace of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit helped me to break that habit.
Pray FREQUENTLY to God that He will give you His Grace to break the habit completely. He has given that grace to me.
May I suggest a prayer to pray, and when you pray it, specifically ask Jesus for that grace, the grace to stop masturbating.
The prayer is called The Chaplet of the Divine Mercy, and Jesus has attached many, many powerful promises to people who pray it humbly. The prayer pleases him very much.

Get out a rosary,
make the sign of the cross and say, In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, AMEN.

Then pray, out loud,
1 Our Father
1 Hail Mary
1 Apostles Creed.

Then, on each LARGE bead of the Rosary, pray devoutly the following:
ETERNAL FATHER, I OFFER YOU THE BODY AND BLOOD, SOUL AND DIVINITY, OF YOUR DEARLY BELOVED SON, OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, IN ATONEMENT FOR OUR SINS, AND THOSE OF THE WHOLE WORLD.

Then, on the 10 hail Mary beads, pray devoutly these words,
FOR THE SAKE OF HIS SORROWFUL PASSION,
HAVE MERCY ON US, AND ON THE WHOLE WORLD.

After praying 5 decades of this, devoutly conclude the prayer by invoking God, saying Three Times the following prayer:
HOLY GOD, HOLY MIGHTY ONE, HOLY IMMORTAL ONE,
HAVE MERCY ON US, AND ON THE WHOLE WORLD.

After that, devoutly say to Jesus,
My Jesus of Mercy, I Trust in You !! AMEN.
Make the sign of the cross reverently, and you’re done.

This prayer is a powerful form of what Protestants
call “pleading the blood” for your sins and for your needs.
Jesus Christ told Saint Sister Faustina that He is very, very pleased by this prayer and will grant extraordinary graces to all who sincerely and devoutly say it, for their own needs, or for the needs of others.

May God grant you success !!!
God bless,

BigDL75, it seems to me that you’ve found a solid, helpful priest to be your confessor. Keep going to confession to him whenever you need to receive the sacrament of Reconciliation.

You certainly made the right decision by overcoming the temptation to leave the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church is indeed the one true Church–no doubts about it. One of the signs of her truth is that she refuses to compromise on condemning the sin you’re combating.

“Cold turkey” is the only way to fight temptations against sexual self-control, since under no circumstances may a mortal sin be committed. But “cold turkey” doesn’t exclude the fear that you may fail again. If that happens–if the Devil lands a punch and puts you on the canvas–then just pick yourself up off the canvas and keep fighting (which implies going to confession). I doubt that your confessor meant to deny these principles. I believe that he was merely reflecting the following teaching of section 2342 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

"Self-mastery is a long and exacting work. One can never consider it acquired once and for all. It presupposes renewed effort at all stages of life."

Assimilate the whole section on the virtue of chastity in the new catechism (sections 2331-2400).

Man, here’s a concrete thought to help you: the guy who conquers masturbation is making his future happiness as a husband and father much more secure. He’s acquiring the toughness necessary for repelling all the temptations that will threaten his love for, and his faithfulness to, his wife. A guy who achieves sexual self-control before marriage is doing a lot to improve his chances of staying strong after he gets married.

Remember this: the word “virtue” comes from the Latin word virtus, which means “manhood” and “courage.”

I especially like your confessor’s urging you to exercise. Physical fitness reinforces mental and spiritual fitness, for all forms of toughness reinforce one other. So, in addition to praying (especially the Rosary), keep playing football. In fact, intensify your fitness program. Consider adding running to it. And eat more intelligently and get more sleep, dude!

Here’s an awesome aphorism from one of the intellectual giants. Even though he didn’t have the Faith, Plato said something that applies to every guy who wants to be truly strong:

"To conquer oneself is the first of all victories, and the greatest" (Laws, 626 E).

Good luck, man!

Keep and spread the Faith.

Well, the only advice I can offer is that quitting ANYTHING cold turkey is never easy. In fact, it is often impossible. Think about it logically, you developed an addictive habit. You may think yourself capable of stopping the action, but in reality, quitting cold turkey would really just leave you with a void. It would leave a chunk out of your life. Imagine if you quit playing football cold turkey, I’ll bet you wouldn’t know what to do with that time that you normally dedicated to football before.

Eating and sleeping right are essential towards getting a handle on your stress, which can trigger relapse into this (or many other) addictive behaviors.

So if you want to quit cold turkey, give it a shot, but you may just frustrate yourself. Instead, I would find something more productive to do with my time to fill in that void and gradually just shift on over to that.

Were it me, I would do the following…
  1. Figure out how much time I dedicate to my particular addiction
2)Find something to do that is readily accesible to occupy my mind that will fall into that general time frame.
3)Take it one day at a time

Masturbation is a sin essentially because it is deliberate misuse of the procreative power, which is sacred. It is similar to what Onan did, when, refusing to raise up offspring for his brother,
he spilled his seed on the ground. God struck him dead for doing that. Masturbation is similarly sinful. Ya want the pleasure, but not the responsibility.

Oh, by the way, R. McGeddon.
THAT’s pretty clever.
Armageddon perhaps?

🙂
