I don’t want to see a bare breast, no matter the circumstances! Just like I don’t want to see guys in Speedos!
Have you considered introspection, as to why a natural means of providing nutrition to a baby causes you such great anxiety?
One of my friends was breastfeeding, and she would whip it out, when I suggested a blnket to cover herself, she got mad.
I’m please to hear that one of your friends has a back bone.

To be frank, that’s your problem, not theirs.

People do tend to get radically passionate about sustaining the life of a child with the best source of nutrition…breast milk.
You’ve prove my point completely, thank you.

So than a breast feeding women should be able to do so in front of my children (I don’t have them), my grandmother, everyone with no concern for being polite or having manners.

Yeah, your right-it is “my problem”.

The problem with feminism is that it degenerated into woman acting like men, which isn’t really the best model in the world…

I am all for woman to be treated with equal respect and have equal opportunity. The fact that some women take advantage of the visual aspects of men and exploit them - well, women behaving badly is just as bad as men behaving badly.

Women and men are created differently on purpose - that’s why it takes a man a woman to make a married couple. Each brings a unique set of talents and abilities. To deny that men and women are different denies that there was a reason they both were created.

I did edit my post for clarification, but people showing their private parts make me uncomfortable, especially if I don’t know them all that well. Would you feel comfortable if I stripped in front of you?

What do you mean by openly? Most of my sister in laws and friends are able to breast feed without showing any of their actual breast. When the breast is not showing, is it the act itself that makes people uncomfortable? I’m not trying to attack you at all, I’m just trying to understand, since I myself find it so beautiful and tame.

I think that people are passionate about this issue because it affects them in such a radical way. I am an extremely modest woman, and I make great efforts to cover myself up so as not to tempt men in any way. But, as a young woman who intends to breast feed her children, I have this deep fear that I will be ostracized from society, or categorized with the women who act and dress immodestly, just because young infants tend to be quite needy, and breast feeding is the healthiest option.

For example, I think that these are lovely: secretlynursing.com/. Would something like this be appropriate for a modest Catholic woman?

Interesting thread to say the very least. What ever happen in this upside-down bloody fragrant sexist world that a man shouldn’t always treat a woman like a respected lady and a women treating a man like a respected gentlemen. Too old fashioned you say.
Any damned wonder why I always stayed a single man who’s still a virgin over fifty. Guess I’m just a hopeless romantic who feels out of place in a strange world. I don’t buy into either feminism or masochistic B.S.
I wasn’t made for this primitive world even though I forced to live in it.

And we can thank God for that.

In my opinion (and it’s just my opinion) I consider it a bit jarring to turn around see a woman breastfeeding in a mall, at a ball game (both places I’ve seen it happening) or another public place. When there are other children around, and they either gawk or point at this lady, I’d rather not explain that a 4 year old.

Thankfully, most of the women I know who’ve breastfed don’t feel the need to do so in public.

You didn’t answer my question! 🙂 Or maybe you did and I just don’t understand it. This is honestly making me sad. :o

Your comparing stripping…to feeding a child?

Guy, that’s just plain wrong…😦

You didn’t answer my question! 🙂
Whoops! Sorry.

In my opinion something like the link you provided would be fine, I guess.

I don’t think it’s a matter of modesty, I think it’s a matter of discretion.

People need to remember that others feelings do count. Why go out of your way to make someone else feel uncomfortable? I mean, I learned in kindegarten that not to be selfish like that-to take into other’s feelings.

By openly-I don’t know, I’ve never thought about it-how about it is obvious to other children or something like that. I don’t know.

Hope it helps!

Countrysinger is a girl, thank you. And a very nice and funny one. As evidenced by her signature. Which says Woman.

Come now, Zatzat, let’s not be nasty.

Sadly; its the Neanderthal instinct and sexual lusts of man who made the normalcy of a woman breastfeeding her beloved infant a dirty thing. And that’s the brass tax of the matter.

And yes I am a man here who is speaking.

Thanks. That does help. I think discretion and modesty go hand in hand. But I think that that there should also be a mutuality of understanding among people. Breast feeding women need to understand, of course, that some people might be uncomfortable and accommodate for that by acting discretely and modestly in the process. However, other people must realize that it’s really hard to be a new mother, and accommodate for some of their needs as well to encourage healthy children. I can respect a mutuality of understanding, and I think that this is the culture of life ideal.

Well, I’m a man too-and I don’t think it’s that simple.

I mean by wearing provocative clothes
Define provocative. There are some things that are appropriate at different times.
figthing to breast feed in public and getting mad at people who are against it.
I have no problem with this.
Being the ones to initate dates with men,
I have no problem with this.
using profanity
I have no problem with this.
flirting (not innocently)
Depends. I have a hunch that most of the time, this is a power play by the woman.
being offended when men open doors
If they don’t want me to do it, then I won’t.
The reason I ask is because as a woman I need to know it is OK to be old fashion.
It is always okay to live the way you want, as long as you are not harming another person.

I don’t think we really disagree that much. I’m glad that we could have this discussion without getting nasty. God bless!

*I have enjoyed this thread…thanks for posting.

Just an aside about breastfeeding…it’s not immodest. So to say…a woman should do so modestly…that doesn’t make a lot of sense. She should be discreet…yes, we all don’t need to see it…but, I don’t mind seeing a woman breastfeed…it’s a beautiful, natural thing. It’s not sexy or sexual…breasts were created to provide sustenance for babies…not for sex. That’s the fall (and continual fall…how far can we fall?) of mankind talking.

Question…if you see a breastfeeding woman once in a blue moon…so what? Where are you people hanging out as to where you’re seeing sooo breastfeeding women to where it’s a problem? :p*

for what it’s worth, I’m super uncomfortable with women doing so openly and in public. I don’t think it’s appropriate at all.

When I’ve spoken to other people about this, they seem to hate me! People are radically passionate about this issue.
Hi Rasclaking,

I want to thank you (geniunly) for posting this. I think that if woman want respect we should respect men and their feelings. The fact that women opnely and publicly breast feed makes you uncomfortable to me shows deep down you do understand the sacredness of our bodies.

I saw the link to the covering and I agree these are OK. But I still think in moderation.

Let me give an example. A friend of mine took her baby to the mall to have her pictures done. There is a room where women could go and breast feed. When she got to the room, it was full so she had to sit on a bench in the mall and feed her baby. Everyone stared and she felt bad. I think if she had one of those coverings to use, society should have a spirit of forgiveness since it was never her intention to breastfeed in a public place to start.

However, I just don’t like the attitude some woman have when it comes to public breastfeeding. As a kid I was taught to respect adults and if they wanted grown up space I was to respect that. I resent as an adult not having the same respect. I will give another example. Once I went to do an aerobics class at the gym. A woman put her baby that was less than 2 month in a car seat at the back of the class. (Not sure where the mom was in the class). All of us at the back of the class had to be very careful not to kick the car seat. I did not appreciate my work out being ruined. I just think that mom’s should know they now have sacrifices to make rahter than inconvinience everyone else.

One last word about breast feeding. I understand God intended it to be a beautiful process for a mom to feed her kid. But to me it is like using the washroom. Everyone has been there (we were all babies at some point), everyone knows about it but you still go to a private place and shut the door because there is a time and a place for everything.

And YES I have no problem comparing breasfeeding a baby to using the washroom. They are BOTH God given functions and part of our bodies and there is nothing wrong with equating them

…Pray for them. They are hurting inside whether they know it or not, because they likely haven’t had a good male role model or a man (even their fathers) who can appreciate them for who they are, rather than what they wear.
This kind of touches on a nerve. I don’t disagree with what you’re saying. But I also wouldn’t put women hurting all on the lack of a good male role model. I have three daughters myself…2 in college and one going into high school. As a dad, I appreciate gratitude and respect. And I think good moms understand the importance of that and model it for their kids. I think Dr Laura was absolutely right on that point.

Ok, I have a question that would definitely become heated in a secular environment but I am hoping on a Catholic website men will be more comfortable anwering.

What do men really think about the way women carry on today? I mean by wearing provocative clothes, figthing to breast feed in public and getting mad at people who are against it. Being the ones to initate dates with men, using profanity, flirting (not innocently), being offended when men open doors and all the other stuff.

I have often been insituations were woman would do things in front of their husbands that I though was not nice and the man simply ignores it. For example, my uncles wife kept talking about her first husband, and then her second husband in front of him (he is her third husband). Personally, I found that was a put down to my uncle to have it in his face that she still though about them (ok, I know my uncle chose to be her third husband but that is beside the point). I think my uncle ignored it because he knew she wouldn’t stop and he had too much pride to admit his hurt.

Once a man told me when his girlfriend hits him, he laughs because he knows if he hits her back society would be totally against him. Is it possible it is not the physical pain that hurst the man but the emotional put down that would crush him?

Deep down, regardless of what society says, do men not want wifes, mothers and sisters that are respectable? Also, please list behaviours that feminist think woman should do but deep down men think are wrong.

The reason I ask is because as a woman I need to know it is OK to be old fashion. Since I can’t get the support from my female peers to be modest, can I please have some support from men

Thanks

CM
Personally I think it’s fantastic in most respects! Why shouldn’t women be a free and have the same rights as men? The Bible doesn’t say women should be oppressed in the least, why are you suggesting that is a good thing?

Now are some things taken too far? Yea just like they are with men…

Most importantly what issue do you have with breastfeeding? in pubic or private people need to get over themselves in America. Everywhere else women go topless on the beach and breastfeed when needed and it is seen as natural.

Do 16 year old boys sometime oogle women on the beach? Yea they probably do but since no one makes a big deal about it they get over it.

Breasts are made for one primary reason, to feed babies. Can they become sexualized, yes of course as can be many other parts of the body that don’t have anything to do with reproduction or sexuality.

We need to get over our fear of our bodies in regards to natural function. Once we do that it might make the other issues, like dressing provocatively just to gain sexual attention, a little less worth while 🙂
