A few years ago I was attending Mass at a parish where the priest was from Mexico. I remember vividly how he went off on the president of Mexico, Vicente Fox. Fox was apparently claiming he was doing this or that for the Mexican people. The priest said “he is a liar” and just went on and on about how the people in Mexico are exploited by a handful of rich and powerful men.

It was largely lost on an Anglo congregation, which he was addressing at the time. But there was a later Spanish Mass that day, so perhaps he only prepared one sermon.

I expect to get chewed out for saying the following.

I don’t have a problem with Mexican immigrants. The U.S. is heavily influenced by things Mexican already anyway, and much of Mexico is half-Americanized. And they’re the most capitalistic people I have ever met. Much more so than natives of America.

And to my understanding, their devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe is a central part of their self-concept, and so they don’t leave the Church as much as some others do.

Central Americans, on the other hand, leave the Church in droves. I am very concerned that all we have done when it comes to them is allow the infiltration of Protestantism into central America.

DW is from Latin America. As civil war was heating up and bullets began to fly, she had to apply for a visa, pay the fees, get all sorts of medical tests, documents relating to birth and citizenship, interview with the US Consulate, wait and wait. She is rather upset about the uncontrolled flood of economic refugees that, while looking for honest work, do end up sending billions out of the US economy. She wonders why Mexico, root of the problem, is getting a complete pass. The problem is not the US - it’s Mexico!

As well, US immigration is dysfunctional. Broken. Those who want a permit cannot get one. A Filipino seminarian was to be ordained a transitional deacon. ICE denied his family visas to attend, even though they showed evidence of their homes and businesses in the Philippines. He flew back home to be ordained.

A year later, when he was ordained to the priesthood, they were allowed into the US.

Beam me up, Mr. Scott.

If the church is going to involve itself in politics it should have to pay taxes. This is a great example as to why the church should start paying

Agreed.

Legal immigrants, US citizens, illegal immigrants themselves are all victims of illegal immigration.

The amount of crime connected to illegal immigration, from drug and weapons smuggling, human trafficking and identity theft should not be dismissed lightly.

May be just me, but to teach that economic refugees are a blessing, when said teachers monetarily benefit from the revenues sent back via the labors of those same refugees strikes me as eerily similar to human trafficking.

Yes, the goal is that those people are unwanted.

There are many Americans who want to legally change those laws, so people don;t have to wait 25 years to come legally.
So you think we should just want anyone who themselves wants to be here?
You advocate for open borders, and your group is a distinct minority of voters.
Accept the law as it’s written since you don’t have the votes to change it.
