It also does not take into account the business. Contrary to the belief of many on the left, not every business owner is a millionaire, and many are struggling to make ends meet, especially in light of the the burdensome costs that Obama’s policies impose on them.
.
Not only that but many Catholics seem to forget that Church teaching on wages says we are to take into account the value of the labor supplied to the company by the worker, the ability and needs of the worker, and the ability and needs of the business. Catholics tend to forget that last part.

I have already. A weekly wage after 40 hours work that provides for the basic needs of the employee and his/her family. The hourly rate will vary from economy to economy…
What is your definition of “basic needs”? Please be specific.

Consider the importance that the Bible puts on a just wage and that it considers the withholding of it gravely sinful:
Deuteronomy 24:15
New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
15 You shall pay them their wages daily before sunset, because they are poor and their livelihood depends on them; otherwise they might cry to the Lord against you, and you would incur guilt.

But the Church also teaches that if you have a choice between voting for a political candidate that supports an increases the minimum wage and also supports abortion and a candidate that does not support an increase in the minimum wage and is against abortion, we must vote for the latter. Abortion is grave matter and is more important then so called political “solutions” to helping the poor. Catholics, in good conscience, cannot support abortion any form. Catholics who vote for political candidates who support abortion, even thought the candidate is for numerous programs that “help” the poor, are committing grave sin.
What if said politician has no influence on the availability of abortion…?

The same access to a rate of pay scale to people doing the same job, regardless of age or gender…
You realize there are benefits extended to men and women differently beyond pay, correct? Like maternity leave (our company did not offer paternity leave). So the discussion should include fair treatment across compensation plans, not simply pay.

I’m referring directly to ‘wage’ equality… However I agree that, along with pay, other Terms and Conditions of employment should be granted such as fair Annual/Sick leave arrangements, flexible working hours where applicable and a fair and transparent promotion scheme…

Let’s remember that the topic of this thread is whether there is a moral obligation to raise the minimum wage. It’s not even about our opinions of the minimum wage and who can make the better argument for or against it. A bishop has exhorted us to support raising it, which raises the question: are we morally bound to follow his lead or is this a case where he has simply offered a political opinion which we are quite free to ignore?

Since the church is silent on the issue it seems fairly clear that the bishop is offering a political solution and not a moral teaching.

Isn’t that what it’s about though? Whether or not it’s better for the poor if the minimum wage should be raised or not?

Because pushing up the bottom, regardless of where it is, effects all of those above?

If minimum wage is currently $8, and you raise it to $10, then a person who worked their way up to $10 isn’t going to be happy with suddenly making minimum wage again, will they? And then everything goes up (or unemployment, or both).
You are also forgetting that many union contracts are tied to the minimum wage, and any increase in the MW results in higher wages for all the union members automatically.

We already have that, and incredibly so. In fact, women are paid almost identical as men for the same work. The gender wage “gap” only exists because women as a population choose work that pays less, take more secure work, work less hours, and take time off to have families.

It doesn’t matter. If they openly support abortion then they are implicit in the sin. The POTUS does have a direct influence over abortion though and he has openly supported abortion when he was a Senator.

You do know that it is illegal in the US for companies to discriminate on the basis of age and gender right?
And it’s even illegal (or very questionable) to ask a woman if she is pregnant even if she is 9 months along.

Consider the importance that the Bible puts on a just wage and that it considers the withholding of it gravely sinful:
Who and what defines a just wage?

It is illegal to withhold a wage here in the US. The courts (and general public) would not look to kindly on it.

To some people, this doesn’t matter. To use their own words against them, they are Cafeteria Catholics.

They can pontificate all they want about “just wage” or “living wage” but cannot define what it is. Nor does the Church. Whereas, the Church has clearly spoken about abortion.

Exactly.Supporting abortion on demand does not happen in a vacuum. It influences a person’s worldview-a worldview where the right to life in secondary to the goals of the State.Such a person is so morally flawed they should not be entrusted with a position in govt at any level.

Of course it matters. The person’s personal views are irrelevant in their professional role as a politician…

Have you ever voted for a non-Catholic politician…?
