Is it the amount of people or the welfare mentality that started breed generations of people feeling they are owed something…The was a time when we didn’t have millions who didn’t want to work. There was/is legitimate need out there…There are also those who don’t want to take anything beneath what they had so they will just take till it’s gone.
The same can be said for senior citizens who receive social security and medicare and feel they are entitled to it. It also has produced millions who don’t want to work and gives money and health benefits even when there is no legitimate need. When people see seniors milking the system like they do, how can you blame younger people for not trying to get their share before the system collapses?

Today’s Gospel was about seeking to remove the speck from another’s eye while ignoring the plank in your own.

You may disagree with my argument, but calling those who disagree with you as discussing fantasy is most uncharitable and against forum rules.
I was referring to specific historical events which has nothing to do with divergent viewpoints. Anyone can look up the historical facts so they should not generally be a matter of debate or disagreement. This is particularly pertinent with regard to charitable Catholic institutions: were they or were they not able to satisfy the needs of the disadvantaged prior to ‘big government’ stepping in?

The Church did and continues to work with the poor and disadvantaged. There are millions of success stories. Have they satisfied ALL the needs of the disadvantaged prior to big government? No.

And neither has big government. In fact, the rate of children raised in poverty has grown since 1965. Big government is the cause of poverty in the world.

Look at Somalia. Their government is refusing aid.

Oi, would that all my problems could be this easily summed up (and solved) with one-line generalizations.

I don’t know that Somalia has a functioning government to speak of…the causes of poverty in the world are many and complex…the rate of poverty likewise rises due to multiple causes and… the Church does what it can but at no time have I seen it officially suggested that government should just butt out and leave it all to us (which is a commonly expressed sentiment among the people I engage in these discussions with).

No, social security is a welfare program where you take from people who work and give to those who don’t work. It would be one thing if these people couldn’t find jobs, but the fact of the matter is the vast majority of recipients are too lazy to work. As I have said time and time again, 100 years ago 75% of men over 65 were in the labor force and today it is around 17%. At a time when people are healthier and living longer and more able to work, they are less likely to work. There is only one explanation for this: pure laziness.

Second, there is the moral issue. The fact that these greedy seniors think that they have the right to my hard earned money is downright immoral. Just because they sat on their hands while their income was redistributed to others does not give them a claim on my money. Second, I have no moral obligation to give the able bodied any social security.
Social security is not a welfare program despite your uninformed opinions. Every person that is on social security has contributed to it earlier in life. Who made you God to decide how people can spend their money, their time later in life. As for your 100 years ago rant, what was the life expectancy back then? Not as high as today and for you to say that its laziness is beyond contempt and sinful.

You attack seniors who have worked their lives as lazy and greedy is plain wrong and if you ever say it again, I will surely fulfill my Catholic obligation to instruct the ignorant.

Big government is the cause of poverty in the world.
Not drought, not war, not poor harvests, not a lack of personal responsibility, not a lack of jobs? I think you might have simplified the cause a wee bit.

Personal attacks are forbidden on the Forum: “your uninformed opinions,” “who made you God,” “you…are beyond contempt and sinful.”

This is a Catholic Forum, and though anyone can post here, you ought to remember that the audience is primarily one of Catholics, who are expected to treat one another with respect. If you prefer to use personal attacks, there are Forums that welcome such direct personal confrontations.

When you take from people who work, and give to people who don’t work that is the textbook definition of a welfare program. Many people who receive Temporary Assistance to Needy Families have paid various taxes in their lifetimes, does the payment of taxes make something not a welfare program?

If people are able to work, but choose not to work because they get government money is not laziness? So according to your theory we all should be perfectly free to stop working and give us money if we can convince the government to give it to us.

As to your comment on who am I to play God and tell people what to do with their time and money. You are right, if someone wants to save throughout their adult life and not work when they reach a certain age, there is nothing wrong with that. But to expect me to pay thousands of dollars in taxes so that some able bodied person can play golf instead of working is ridiculous. What people do with their own money is their business, when they are spending my money it becomes my business.

The question is: Are most 62 -70 year olds able to work? If they are and they choose not to, then that is clearly laziness. To demand that people like me continue to work and pay for their health care and SS is greedy. For example, seniors today did not pay taxes for Medicare part D, so they have no way to claim that they are entitled it. Yet try and cut it and watch them scream. That my friend is greed.

One only has to look at the former Soviet Union to see what happened.

Poor harvests,
no incentives,
no personal responsibility
no jobs
no food

Is this the path America is on?

Most of which can be attributed to government.
Sure, they stopped the rain, they poured salt on the soil, they caused the lack of agricultural jobs, they denied people food. You Republicans just amaze me.

More amazement…🙂

What is the reason for farm subsidies?

There is no reason for grain to rot or be eaten by rats in warehouses and on docks.

There is plenty of food on this planet to feed the whole planet. Droughts, etc. in the US have not caused Americans to go hungry.
Mogadishu — Somalia’s Al shabaab movement refused international and local aid agencies to reach droughts affected areas in southern and central Somalia to help the needy Somalis, an Al shabaab official said on Wednesday.
Sheikh Suldan Mohammed Ala Mohammed, an Al shabaab official, has told local Mogadishu radios that they will never allow aid agencies to operate in the regions under their control.
Ala Mohammed charged those aid agencies with having hidden agendas in which they want to propagate and promulgate the Christianity, adding that they also want to launch brain wash attacks against ordinary people of Somalia.
He went on to say that selling and consumption of drugs to be spread in all Somali regions by what he called Christian relief agencies.

Eritrea to U.N.: Take This Aid And Shove It

In a stinging rebuff to the United Nations and its anti-poverty efforts, Eritrea, one of the poorest countries in Africa, has told the world body that it wants out of its long-term development agreement because the U.N. makes the problem worse, not better.
The reason, given in a January 26 notification letter from the country’s powerful Finance Minister, obtained by Fox News, is that “aid only postpones the basic solutions to crucial development problems by tentatively ameliorating their manifestations without tackling their root causes. The structural, political, economic, etc. damage that it inflicts upon recipient countries is also enormous.” In other words, the government argues, U.N. aid does more harm than good.

I know people can Google for anything they want, but I have been reading and following these kinds of stories since I was a teen-ager.

You are quite right, but your responses don’t address your accusation that Big Government is the cause of poverty in the world. It just isn’t that simple.

What I am saying is it’s not lack of resources, it’s governments that get in the way of efficient allocation of resources. You can make it as complicated as you want, but it boils down to ideology.

Bingo! As government grows it becomes more intrusive and becomes a disincentive to innovation and risk.

Example: Say a person makes 249,000 annually - what reason is there to want to make 251,000?

How are hurricanes and tornadoes and drought part of ideology? What can government do about these natural phenomena that get in the way of efficient allocation of resources?

I guess you don’t know history or current events at all. Governments cause wars. Governments control crop planting, and yes they deny people food. Please pick up a newspaper and read it once in the while.
