. You can take the man out of the hood, but he couldn’t help but to go back to that neighborhood of drugs and crime and create dog fights to the death.
Wow, I think that’s pretty intolerant. There are plenty of men and women who have fought their way out of the 'hood and made decent lives for themselves. When they dedicate themselves to character and doing better for themselves and their kids than they had growing up, it’s doable.

Of course, then they get accused of “acting white” by the people who refuse to work as hard as they did to get out. 😦

Maybe the Saints will sign him since his salvation is assured. I’ll bet Fraancis of Assisi would LOVE that. Being that he was such a lover of animals.

Here’s an op-ed piece that has some points on the good that would come from Vicks returning to pro ball, if you’re interested in seeing it: gbtribune.com/sportsnews.php?sid=7c7387d
The article says that Vick should be required to pay the bulk of his wages back “into the community. Non-profit organizations and inner-city schools are just two groups who could benefit from Vick’s return if handled properly. Might donations to Humane Societies seem fit?”

Has Vick given any indication he is willing to do this?

Yeah I thnk that is over the line too. I see no reason to even bring race into this. It is about character. It is about how we “forgive” to make ourselves feel better not to do the right thing. It is about the lack of honor, pride, and shame that we are all sharing in. I know that in my house what you do speaks louder than what you say and honor, pride, honesty and virtue is something that is valued over anything else.

Let us not forget he denied his guilt. Forgivness comes with repentance.

Actually that whole “hood” comment is such an ugly thing if you stop to disect it. I feel for the youth in these so called “hoods” that looked and will continue to look to him as what they should aspire to be, All eyes on Jesus please!

I am sure his agent will be all over every little dollar spent in this department. Actually Vick could do some good long term if he truley changes through Christ. However, just getting him to think of the good he could do first THEN be concerned about his career would have been great. So far this looks like a great PR firm job. But there is always hope. I just wish instead of “gettin paid” he thought about the right things to be teaching young people right now. Here is his gut check moment, A time where for the past 2 years he could have been showing his amends but instead of gut check time it is just check time.😦

I am just stating what people feel and what I hear them saying and it isn’t good. The NFL can play all the mid season “put Vick in when no ones looking game”, but the people do not like bullies. I don’t like them either. As for being in the hood, leaving the hood and then going back to the hood, was all by his own choice. If he went back to his neighborhood to make it better for the people he grew up with, no one would be talking about this, but he went back to prey on his old neighbors and friends who he knew would flock to his pit bull fights like flys to a manure wagon. Vick made business people out of them and the business was watching two dogs tear each other apart. If you read about these thugs, Feeding the dogs no food and gunpowder really gets them going. That is what raises the tension level. There are too many people in this country that honor animals and do not like people like Vick taking advantage of a person or animal that cannot defend itself.

Dogs help the blind manuver through life, the police dogs defend us and our homes, they are with the American soldier fighting for this country and they find survivors when buildings come crashing down. And for these and many other reasons, people don’t care what his problem was. 🙂

ESPN Is reporting tha Vick may sign soon. Perhaps the patriots. Figures… I guess we will see how far the fame and dollar status go.😦 Maybe all those fans will “forgive” him like good Catholics and buy what he is selling.
And on the heels of more steroid leaks in baseball and homosexexual slurs in College football.
“Where are all the good men dead, in the heart or in the head?”
Has Vick done anything to you personally?

He’s already served. Didn’t that suit you? Wasn’t that enough? You didn’t get to pass sentence on him and neither did I. That was not our portion.

And if Maria Goretti could forgive her murderer, why can you not forgive Vick?

I think we have hashed this out. I think that what he has doen should offend you personally. I think he should not be given the privalege to play. I hope he goes to heaven. I think the military would haev kicked him out and they aren’t “unchristian” for having those standards. And I flat out am not a fan of his. frankly I think we can move on in this conversation without sanctimonious saint prayer wars.
I thnk you have made your points and I have made mine. there is nothing new in what we are saying now, so lets just move on with the topic.
Lets not demonize each other over weather we think a sports figure should play or not. ok?

This guy is a bum. You can take the man out of the hood, but he couldn’t help but to go back to that neighborhood of drugs and crime and create dog fights to the death.
Yeah, those people just can’t help it can they! Maybe it is genetic. If the subject of racism comes up, or if it is not race you are referring to but class, then I wanted to tag this post as the start.

In any case, I am not worried too much about the PETA people. They are too few and even fewer football fans.

FYI - It doesn’t offend me personally, not even in the least. I recognize that many people have failings and many people do something in their life that could have landed them in jail or prison. At least his crime was only directed against animals and not people. In Texas what he did would only be a misdemeanor.

Yeah, and I usually agree with the majority of your posts. But we disagree here. I think you should be offended. You certainly don’t have to be. But I guess the real reason that I am so offended is that football and honor and character and religion are so tight in my mind that I just can’t respect this guy or anyone who chooses him to lead.
Texas is great, in fact better than 98% of the states out there, but animal rights and the stewardship thereof is not exactly one of it’s strong points. And I say that as an avid hunter. In California it was a misdameanor to do drugs and legal to have gays marry (until recently) I fear the road we aregoing down in what we find acceptable. You know how a serial killer starts on small animals, I feel we do that with our society only now we accept animal cruely coupled with abortion.

Yes, but the standards belong to the NFL to make up in the best interest of their business and their fans, whatever they deem that to be. They are not a political party or an animal rights organization. Do you think a person once convicted of a crime should never again be pemitted to work or to be moved to a lower class and permitted only basic manual labor? The man has paid his debt. The crime he committed is nor related to football or the NFL. Yes, an embezzler should not be permitted to return to accounting or a pervert to working with children. Beyond that, it should be up to the employer, not society at large . Like you said, football is not that important, so what is the beef?* *M

Many professional organizations do have standards of conduct. Lawyers, nurses, doctors and probably others. If convicted of a crime, even after ones debt to society is paid, these organizations have a right to censure those under it’s jurisdiction and bar them from practice.

Absolutely. However, that is usually within the discipline of that profession. The legal profession has a direct quantifiable reason why any law breaker would be censored, as does the law enforcement profession. Likewise certain crimes are more germaine to certain professions. Theft would exclude many job opportunities, for example.

I would have no problem if the NFL decides that it only wants people of high character to play to serve as role models for today’s youth. However, I have never seen that particular side of the NFL. Instead, they play football. The players at this time are not good models and should not be held up as examples to follow.

That’s what we have the Saints for.

And this may be the heart of the problem. Many children look up to sports “heroes” as if they were role models. Perhaps our culture needs to be more clear that famous people aren’t necessarily good people.

Why?

Prayer is always relevant.

You have confused the concept of justice with vengeance and malice. Defending those who have done wrong is very unusual for me. My motif is, and always has been, battle.

Lately, however, I am beginning to think about the concept of mercy. And I find it extrememly distasteful and inappropriate to see so many people dancing on a man’s grave, in the case of Michael Jackson, or doling out vengeance to someone like Vick.

He paid his tab. It’s not up to you to make him pay further.

Again, we have hashed this out. I am happy for you on your spiritual journey.

So it’s okay to ingage in animal cruality and be allowed to play football? What a very good roll model for the younger people.
So how come “hate the sin, not the sinner” doesn’t apply here with Vick?

I don’t like him. I don’t like football. I don’t care about any teams. But if a team picks him up, why can’t he play? He did his time. He is no role model. Any team is taking a chance if they hire him. Personally I think he will have a hard time finding a job.

But come on folks — shouldn’t he be allowed to work? In my perfect world, Michael Vick would be low man on a cleaning crew at a pit bull rescue.

isn’t that the truth.

Yeah, TO, Vick, and the many others in sports that have this “too cool” attitude are a sad commentary. But I have a close personal friend who was a reciever on three different NFL teams and not only is he one of the most faithful Catholics I know. And he has many stories of virtuous people in these sports that we can look to as great examples. But the PR machines just don’t seem to like to focus on the positive.
Like the old contraversy with Charles Barkely when he said “we are not role models” even he has changed his tune. “With great power comes great responsibilty” A great quote from spiderman.

Fighting your way out of a bad situation is commendable. Sliding your way back into your neighborhood to take advantage of the people who are still disavantaged is obscene.
