high-heels and make-up are usually worn to attract the opposite sex; thats why i skipped both items some years agao for modesty reasons; would you/do you allow your dd to wear high-heels and make-up ??
*She’s only 13, so no. There are nice looking high heel shoes that are modest, I don’t wear 7 inch spikes…and wearing makeup doesn’t have to be immodest. One can apply it naturally…I don’t see a problem with it. The Catholic Church doesn’t suggest women don’t wear makeup, but in all things, be modest. But, you don’t have to wear makeup, if that is your liking. *

Thank you Sheilathebard for your post as it shows what many women now find good and acceptable, and what is odd – “shapeless denim jumper”. What is that shapeless denim jumper? Something that leaves doubt about the exactness of the torso’s measurements??
What is meant by shapeless? I ask since, just because one doesn’t want to wear skin-tight clothing, doesn’t mean one has to wear baggy clothes either. When I see women wearing baggy clothes I don’t think modest; I think sloppy. Something can have a trim, stream-lined fit without being body-hugging. I think the OP’s pant suit illustrates this. It’s neither tight nor baggy; it has a feminine flow to it.

*Something to keep in mind about such topics as modesty, too…is that we should of course be concerned with how the world views us…and how we present ourselves in appearance DOES matter. So, yes we should be modest in dress. But, we must take care to be modest in our actions. I have seen people who are dressed one way, and act another…whether it’s immodest or otherwise…In Jesus’ time, He instructed that it is the content of our hearts that matter most. Whenever these threads come up, I often think about the passage below. How we dress should be a natural flow of who we are on the inside…if we act modestly, it should show in our dress.

Matthew 15:1-28
Key Verses: 15:10,11

“Jesus called the crowd to him and said, `Listen and understand.
What goes into a man’s mouth does not make him “unclean,” but
what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him “unclean.”’”*

thank you very much ! it presents my daily rules of modesty: wide top and pants, flat shoes, natural face without makeup !
Nice-- it’s modern and stylish-- you don’t stand out like you’re from a different century, and it’s modest.

I often struggle with the makeup issue. I personally wear makeup to have confidence because I really hate my looks without it. It doesn’t always feel so modest to wear it, though. What feels modest is to be bare-faced, but if I go bare-faced, I have ZERO confidence.

Good post! We have to use our minds when we dress (ask why this or that?) and our eyes while and after we’re dressed. One book described it as keeping the focus on the face of the person rather than the torso area. It’s so sick but i’ve seen more than a few ads and billboards that just show a woman’s torso. Is that the way our secular culture looks at women?? Before abortion comes misused sexuality, before that comes lust which is often fanned by immodest dress and behavior.

The front of the pants suit in ? looks ok - altho a littler longer tunic-type top would look better in my opinion. Might be a little short in back. The colors between the clothing and hair, skin, etc., are pleasing to the eye. The cut of the outfit looks good.

We as Catholic women need to “look” different especially in this day and age. Sadly most of what i see at Mass is, to me, scandalous. Low cut tops, tight tops (i can easily guess the bra size), pants from the back that accentuate the buttocks, pants that show the crack of the buttocks … then the skirts that are slit too far up even tho knee length and are tightly fitted and worn with a top that outlines the bosom. It makes me so sad!!! This am at church i got “treated” to some woman’s hubby who had a very difficult time keeping his mind on the Mass (and he was quite a distraction to me - he was standing in front of me so i couldn’t miss it) - he was staring at a woman 2 pews ahead of him and her two daughters (about 14 and 12) - they were all either wearing no underwear or thongs - this poor guy kept looking and dragging his attention back to the front. He was in his later 50’s to 60’s. Sweet Jesus please help us!!!

Women please! Take a mirror and look at your back ends before you go to Mass with pants on and ask someone else to see if the pants are getting caught in the crack. Or else wear long tunic type top that covers your behind.
Women with skirts please watch how you genflect and bend. If your skirt is above the bottoms of your knees you will need to keep track of this - again use a mirror or a friend to help you.

The idea is to look pleasing and presentable not to be an occasion of sin to others.
I think pants can be modest if done properly …
This is some really good advice. I must admit that I have some of these modern-styled pants that are just made to be tight and low-riding. I’m constantly looking for ultra-long cardigan sweaters to go over them. It’s horrible to see the top of some lady’s underwear sticking out!
Fashion is definitely at odds with modesty these days. I miss the 80s.

I really don’t have any problem with women wearing make-up and high-heels ! I just decided a few years ago, that i feel better when going out with flat shoes and natural face !

Makeup and clothes don’t make you beautiful, but if you’re going to wear clothes anyway, why not put something on in a color that reflects your joyful mood? Why not put a flower in your hair? Is a little bit of soft makeup any different?

They’re all just accessories, like adding flowers to a dining room table. Sometimes it just makes you, or others smile! 🙂
Thank you for your post!
The color in clothes or a flower or ribbon in the hair is decorative. Adding flowers to the table is natural and beautiful. Making a woman’s beauty or feeling of beauty dependent on make-up does seem like a good idea. To me make-up is adding something artificial to what is already there to make it look more than it is in reality - like eye shadow, eye liner, lipstick, blush, colored foundation. It just seems to try to present an appearance that in fact isn’t real. The other problem i have with it is that it seems to me that when i wore it i felt ugly without it and that i had to wear it or be the ugly or odd one out. When i examined those thoughts i decided this was no basis for wearing make-up. I dislike that BILLIONS are spent on make-up. For what?

We women do like to decorate and beautify tho, which is a good thing. However i can see the danger of exposing ourselves, our daughters, and men to the idea of “perfection” in looks. Why else do we slavishly copy fashions - even tho immodest - worn on TV, movies, magazines etc. Is this a good use of our time and effort?

I often struggle with the makeup issue. I personally wear makeup to have confidence because I really hate my looks without it. It doesn’t always feel so modest to wear it, though. What feels modest is to be bare-faced, but if I go bare-faced, I have ZERO confidence.
Thank you for sharing this with us! What do you mean by zero confidence?

I would feel like i might be avoided by people if i didn’t wear make-up or that my looks may be offensive to them. I still struggle with it but i realize that it really doesn’t make a difference. One of the very things I so dislike about make-up is that most of the women i know feel ugly without it or have no confidence - i.e. no one will like them or want to talk to them. Make-up to me is about mind-games - i haven’t got time to waste putting it on anyway because i do have to do something with my hair!!! (hahahaha) and that takes more time than i’d like to spend!

i don’t struggle with this anymore. i wear make up almost every time i go to out and go to work.

i have ten children from age 29 to 3 years old. i have dark cirles under my eyes. my skin is blotchy. i wear make up to improve my appearance from exhaustion and sallowness to healthy and energised.

through my 30’s i used to have long hair (it was witchy looking, thoughi didnt realize it) and i wore no make up. i thought that was consistent with Christian witness. but i learned that i wasn’t an attractive witness to openness to life and fiathful marriage because i looked like an apprentice hag.

these days, i wear my hair a lot shorter. i wear make up almost every time i leave the house (except to the grocery store.) i ditched the denim jumpers for pants and neat tops (I LOVE THE OPs OUTFIT!!!) i wear earrings.

now my appearance is much better witness to Christian motherhood. i look joyful, not exhausted and scary. so much so, that people who’ve seen the ***before and after ***have remarked about the big difference it has made in my wittness.

i’m a much better witness to my daughter’s too. the oldest of them have said so emphatically.

I’m sure you never looked like a hag, but that is an awesome story. 🙂

I most heartily agree! My mother went through the same thing, and I have to say I am very glad she always encouraged us to look feminine and pretty with out being vain. 🙂

from a young guys perspective.

No, I don’t think pants in general are immodest. some are I guess, but I’ve seen more immodest dresses, skirts, and mini skirts than immodest pants.

Another side of modesty is to not try to draw attention to ones self. Wearing denim jumpers (can you tell I was home schooled?) draws a lot of attention these days. Trying to be “modest” and wearing cloths that are very different old fashioned draws attention too therefor not being entirely modest. Wearing really baggy cloths also attracts attention as well as cloths that are too tight. Too tight is probably worse but i think you should avoid either extreme.

More main stream cloths that are not too extreme and don’t show too much i think are totally fine.

I think too much makeup is not attractive. But if used with moderation I think it’s fine. Depends on the situation.

I also think women should dress like women. Catholic women can dress feminine and classy without being immodest.

Just my opinion.

If I go out without make-up, I feel like I’m not completely dressed (I live in an area much like the “OC”-- ladies do not leave their houses without looking a certain way). I find myself keeping my eyes down and not talking to anyone… I call that “zero confidence.”

Some ladies (especially olive/dark-skinned) can look wonderful without make-up; just not me!

Thank you for sharing… this is a good point about being an attractive witness.

Catholicdude, you make a good point about some modest dresses standing out. But the denim jumper? It’s a classic that will NEVER go out of style. 😃

I like denim jumpers…just have to know how to accessorize. 😃

Hello,
we had this topic before, but i’d like to open a whole new thread to one special question:

do you think, a woman wearing pants is dressed modestly ? I myself love pants and wear them every day: They are comfortable, you can move without taking care of rising hems and you never need pantyhose anymore, sheer ankle-highs do it for me!

Find attached a photo of me in one of my favorite pants outfits; does anyone think, wearing pants this way could be immodest?

bilder-hochladen.net/files/thumbs/5snw-i.jpg
Depends on the pants.

The way you’re wearing them in the picture is very modest, I think. Pants on women are frequently (and at least among younger people, usually) immodest but that doesn’t mean (IMO) that ALL pants, on all women, are going to be immodest.

Most of the women’s pants styles that are “in” right now are pretty bad though. They don’t leave much to the imagination.

I know the feeling, at my new job is filled with beautiful women, and I have to keep up. So I get up at 4 am to blow out my hair (stupid wavy hair), put on makeup, put a business suit, and wear 3-4 inch heels (today they are 5 inches and red). 🙂 I get hit on a lot though. 😃 And when I get home, it’s all about the maintanence. If I were to dress differently, I would stand out in a bad way, you know? I don’t want to call attention to myself.

Denim jumpers? EWWW. 😛
