Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the malice and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls. Amen.

Let’s drop the “I will offend my LGBT brothers and sisters” line if I fail to honor their sin! Hogwash. What a weak argument before God.
The problem is that if you offend you close family member, you must be willing to accept the very real possibility that your relationship with that family member might never recover. I know many LGBT people who have been estranged from their families for decades.

Well, because I am a charitible person…

Hell isn’t a version of Valhalla where you get to eat, drink and be merry with your loved ones. It is a horrible awful place and I don’t want anyone to end up there.

If someone told you they didn’t believe in gravity and were planning to jump off a skyscraper wouldn’t you try to stop them?

If you don’t approve of the lifestyle your mother is leading, don’t go to this. Remember, you answer to God.

What does that have to do with you insulting the quality of another person’s education? Nice deflection, there. Your response explains why you try to convince people what you believe is right. It has nothing to do with your lack of understanding of the concept that most people don’t beleive to be true everything they are taught over the course of their lifetime.

So, do you thing that the OP’s mother is going to cancel the wedding if the OP doesn’t attend?

The criticism of the cathecism by the Catholic schools is widespread and frankly, rightfully earned. I didn’t respond to that part of your comment because I assume you have heard these criticisms before.

I have no issue understanding that people reject the Church’s teaching. I do believe most who reject it do not fully understand what they are rejecting which is why I mentioned Hell. If someone is really going to jump off the building and believe they won’t fall…do they really understand gravity?

I also have no issue understanding some people fully understand the Church’s teaching, even believe the Church is correct and STILL reject the Church. But, out of charity, I don’t think that is you or the other poster. I don’t think you would be here if you were one of those.

I hope you people do realize that the issue of this post is one which busts up families on a regular basis. I don’t think suggesting the OP do something /not do something which could likely have such effects on his family is proper, in the Catholic sense. Catholics I know are all about their families. My family is the most important thing I have. We make compromises for each other. We accept that we don’t all believe exactly the same things. We support eachother because we love eachother. Would I drive the getaway car for my sister so she could rob a bank? Of course not. Would I go to an event she was involved in, as big as a wedding, even if I didn’t agree with the person she picked to marry? Of course I would. Why? Because I love her and I support her journey through life. To equate a wedding you disagree with to things like murder, rape, and every other ridiculous comparison I have seen recently in this forum is flawed logic and, to borrow a word from some other people I have read recently, “disordered” to be sure. Love your family. You never know how long you are going to have them. Don’t do things to put wedges between you and your loved ones, like not showing up for their wedding. It is their event, not yours.

Aplogies if I got a little uncharitable upstream in this thread. If you can’t tell, I am passionate about this. Value your family and your familial relationships. It doesn’t mean you have to agree with everything they do or all of their life choices.

Actually, words can be used to change the definitions of just about anything. If you can change the meanings of the words then you can change the rules. Sorry, no sale.

You mean the straight marriages that have been the pillar of civilization for centuries. Those straight marriages?

But QwertyGirl, in all honesty, I think you don’t see the point of the larger picture. The larger picture is that serious unrepented sin casts people into hell. Yes, Catholics do believe this. So it is a very, very false type of sentimental love that says “love your family so much that you stand by them in serious sin.” No one who truly loves another wants to see their destruction. No mother who sees their child going into evil stands by and says “I’m with you; do your thing” if they really love them. Rather, they risk their child’s wrath by doing all they can to stop it, for their greater good. Hell is eternal. Homosexual sin is serious–it is a total commitment to living in sin, day by day, year by year.
There is, sadly, a lot of sentimental “love” out there these days, not true love. True love is tough love. It says I love you enough to deeply care about your eternal happiness.
Jesus stated that anyone who loves his mother and father, children, etc. more than Him is not worthy of Him.

My step-father, who raised me, asked me to help him commit suicide under the new Oregon law. He had terminal lung cancer and was in considerable pain. I told him that I wouldn’t, but would help him with just about everything else. He was angry with me for a little while but eventually understood and respected my position. I helped him with everything during his last few months except for the suicide. He knew I loved him. I had difficulty dealing with my decision and discussed it with my Priest. He was helpful.

My point is that you can still show your mother you love her without supporting those actions that are sinful. I would not go to the wedding, and I would suggest you speak with your priest about it.

Hi guys, I’m in a tough situation. I’m a devout Catholic, but my mom has strayed from the faith for a number of years and is engaged and will have a wedding with her lesbian lover in two weeks. I had originally said I would go because I thought it would be honorable to obey her request for me to come, but I’ve realized that if I go, that means that I support it. I don’t support it. My family now is saying I should be ashamed of myself, and that after all my mom has done for me, I should go to support her. Any thoughts? My mom has only communicated with me via text since I told her yesterday in person that I wasn’t going, and she’s devastated.
OP. The people on the internet are not going to give you the answers you truly need (no offence guys). This is a very delicate and important issue that you should speak to your priest with, he will provide you with the best answer. I wish you well

It isn’t, it only is among those who want to manipulate people against what their consciences tell them. Who cares what such people think.

By counsel,
By command,
By consent,
By provocation
By praise or flattery, (how do you attend a wedding and this one doesn’t come into play?)
By being a partner in the sin,
By silence,
By defending the ill that has been done
Doubt that his mom said “Son, do you think I should be a lesbian?”, scratch counsel
Doubt he commanded his mom “Go marry that woman!!”, scratch command
Doubt he said “I double dog DARE you to marry a woman, you are a coward if you do not!”, so, no provocation.
Doubt that he is saying “mom, you are the BEST lesbian in the world. You put all of the other lesbians to shame. And this wedding, it makes all other lesbian weddings pale in comparison!!”, scratch praise and flattery
Being a partner? Just ewww
Silence? Nope, he has already said that he does not agree. And I’d bet you his mom KNOWS that the Church does not believe lesbian marriage is valid.
Lastly, defending. Again, cannot see the poster above defending the wedding. Sure, he would defend his mom and that is what a good son does!

I wonder, if the poster were asking if he should attend the wedding of his mom to a divorced man outside of the Church, would he be so barraged by the choir here?
