Where in the above statment does it say when he actually removed the clothes from Laban? To Rebecca’s point I believe he was drunk and completely in a stupor so it should have been no problem to remove his clothes before killing him.
It says he took the garments of Laban and put them on AFTER he had cut off his head.

Thanks for the response. I will certainly read this article so I can understand what you are saying more clearly. I think we are somewhat talking around each other. Let me see though if I can restate what I think you are saying:
  1. Read and study the Bible. The wisdom from the book should teach you it is good.
  2. Have faith that the word is from God because it logically makes sense and teaches good things.
  3. Further evidence that it is the word of God because your life improves as you follow it’s teachings.
Is this a fair categorization? Please modify it or scrap it all together if I am offbase. I appreciate your time this has been interesting for me. I will read the article and perhaps I will better understand how you have come to believe the way you do.

Thanks,
Steve Erickson
1 is good but add that God will speak to you through it’s words
2 is a bit oversimplified but basically okay
3 I disagree with…just scrap it.
add that God answers prayers in a variety of ways that CAN include personal revelation. ( in a variety of ways)

Thanks for your response. Sorry, I did not mean disrespect with “just scrap it”. I just meant redo the whole thing if I completely did not understand your position.

I realize that, of course he put them on after this. That is not my question. Let me ask again: Where in the quote does it say he took them OFF?

It seems you are trying to find fault here that does not exist…

Seriously, don’t you think that if someone is drunk enough to strip them down, they are also drunk enough where you could just take their metal plates? No need for murdering them.

Nice topic change when your previous argument does not hold water.

There is no topic change at all. Nephi was getting metal plates and that’s why God told him to kill Laban. There is no way Nephi got the clothes before he killed Laban. That makes no sense whatsoever. But then the whole story doesn’t make sense.

Apparently our understanding of the English language must differ. I notice you still have not shown me where it states when Nephi actually removed his clothes…

Not exactly:

1Nephi 4:19 And after I had smitten off his head with his own sword, I took the garments of Laban and put them upon mine own body; yea, even every whit; and I did gird on his armor about my loins.

You’d really have to be looking for a loophole to claim Nephi took the garments before he cut off the head of Laban.
Not exactly.

I think that he is trying to say that Nephi took laban’s clothes but not necessarily the clothes that he had on. No where does it say that he removed his clothes. Next point?

You are grasping at straws. What did Nephi do? Kill someone and then run around looking for Laban’s clothes? The text doesn’t leave any room for that. Common sense doesn’t leave any room for that as a way to interpret the text.

Of course when a head is severed and the cut clean, it doesn’t mean that a lot of blood would be seen. The clothes could have been saved from blood stains. But who knows. The whole topic is off just a iittle. Who wants to post about severed heads? 😊

Perhaps people who are being asked to believe a scripture in which God tells someone to sever a head?

I think I’ve learned all I need to know about Mormonism from reading this thread. It’s obviously a fraud and the Mormons are willing to say and do anything (even if it’s illogical) to defend it. The Book of Mormon simply can’t hold water – there were no ancient Israelites wandering through the Americas preaching Christianity. There was no Moroni or Nephi or Lehi.

I just found something which is really interesting. There is a city in the Comoros Islands named Moroni. If you look on 19th century maps for this island, you see the Comoros Islands are referred to as Comora Island. So Moroni delivered Joseph Smith the plates on the Hill Cumorah in New York? And there is no connection between the Book of Mormon name and the names on that island? What a coincidence! It’s all made up.

lol you’re good. I understood you. I meant scrap #3 cuz I disagreed with the statement.

I’m in the process of moving from TX to CA and will only be on briefly for a few days but I’ll try to keep up.

For some reason, this is my favorite web-site for mormonilia. Place-names in the Book of Mormon is a very interesting subject.

Vernal Holley did some excellent work on it.

I tried to quote the list of place-names and it wouldn’t format right.

The most intersting thing about this factoid is that the Comoros islands were reputed to be the location of Captain Kidd’s buried treasure. Joseph, being a treasure hound, would certainly have known this legend. That’s obviously where the names came from.

Common sense is not a mormon exegete’s tool.

I like the “girding the loins” phrases and the “and then it came to pass” repetitions.

Mark Twain loved reading the book of mormon for fits and giggles.

It still holds up today for a good laugh.

Didn’t Sam Clemens call the BOM “chloroform in print?”

Yes, but he read it a lot for its psuedo-KJV ironies (unintended of course)
