This guy seems pretty convinced their were no Book of Mormon peoples in the United States.

The Hill Cumorah was in New York so it seems to me the people would have lived there if the Book of Mormon were true. Searching the internet on this is pretty interesting.
There are two theories that have gotten play as to the book of mormon peoples and both have been debated in mormon circles. One is the limited geographical theory which more or less says that the book of mormon peoples inhabited a small area of land. The second one is the hemispheric model which claims just the opposite. The piece that you linked would probably follow the limited geographical model.

There are indeed no gold plates and the LDS know that very well. I have often thought to myself " self if you had some golden plates upon which were written secrets from G-d that would effect all mankind…don’t you think you would take better care of them?🤷
Difficult to take care of them if the angel took them back. You see, if the gold plates were allowed to stay on earth and presented to the public, most of the catholics here would now be mormon since such plates would prove the lds church true. And of course, for a god that works on faith, such a happening would not occur.

How convenient for the Mormons. 😉

Catholic20064, there is no evidence for the BoM. Some mormons grasp at anything they can as “evidence”, but when weighed against proper methodology for determining if that evidence is valid, it always falls short.

The most common thing for them to do is to just lay their belief systems over the top of other belief systems, or scientific discoveries, or urban legends, and Christianity itself. It is a twisted, and in my view, very evil way of defining the world.

These boys you are talking to have been duped into this evil. And now they are trying to convince you. You should avoid them as if they were the Devil incarnate.

Actually, the Bible is not direct communication from God. It is the result of direct communication to His servants who then wrote their communication down. Certainly this communication to His servants is for us. However, a person still has to come to know that the Bible or any other word is actually from God. This can only come through personal revelation. You say it IS from God, I say how do you know?
you then believe the Bible to be just dead words like history? I believe that God speaks to us directly through it today. when we prayerfully read it we find many answers to our most specific questions right there in it. yes you need to believe it is sacred scripture and not just a book. that is where faith comes in.
I don’t believe so. Perhaps we are talking around each other here. The Lord certainly communicates His will to the prophets. I certainly believe this is true. I assume you believe this is true too since this is how the Bible came to being. Furthermore, the Bible is certainly given to the world from God for our benefit. I am assuming this is what you mean by public revelation (please correct if I am misunderstanding you). I too agree with this.
i don’t think i am communicating the difference very well. perhaps you could read the catholic definitions yourself and see if that helps. try this article:

The Bible claims indirect communication from God through his servants. The Koran claim indirect communication through his servants. The Book of Mormon claims indirect communication through His servants. Which is right? Are they all?
excellent question! you have to decide if you believe in Christ. then if you do you have to look at the context in which his words were written and see what early Christians taught and practiced based upon that. then you have to decide if that seems consistent or if you believe that all records of the early church were lost and that God abandoned the church for 1800 years and redid it in america with new doctrines and practices. then i think you can pray more effectively for truth.
My point is that each of us must personally come to a knowledge of what is true or not through direct personal revelation from God.
while I don’t discount this (Peter is a good example of this) I don’t agree that everyone necessarily gets a “revelation” perhaps I am stuck on the semantics. I do believe that the Holy Spirit teaches us and that God in all three persons can and does communicate with us as individuals.
I would agree that studying these is a great approach. But ultimately, one needs to get confirmation whether some, all, or none of these are sources from God. ]/quote] so once again I believe it depends on how we are defining this confirmation.
StevenErickson;3271709:
I am surprised to hear you say this. I can think of no more eternally important question to ask God then which church is true.
Are you suggesting that God will ignore such a prayer?
I agree.🙂
no i’m not saying that but i think he already answered this for all of us and I think we might differ on how he would provide the answer.

I just read what seems to be a stupid story in the Book of Mormon. Nephi is told to kill a guy named Laban. He cuts off his head. Then he puts on Laban’s clothes to fool Laban’s servant. Wouldn’t Laban’s servant have wondered about all the blood all over Nephi’s clothes? What a mess.

You will find the BOM full of similar stupid stories. Where you get the real whizzers is in D&C, where all the “revelations” are found. There is something there for everyone, like the one JS got when he tried to con his wife into accepting polygamy. If I tried to pull that on my wife, I would be singing soprano in jig time.👍

This one I think is the kicker:
28 And it came to pass that when the men of Coriantumr had received sufficient strength that they could walk, they were about to flee for their lives; but behold, Shiz arose, and also his men, and he swore in his wrath that he would slay Coriantumr or he would perish by the sword.
29 Wherefore, he did pursue them, and on the morrow he did overtake them; and they fought again with the sword. And it came to pass that when they had all fallen by the sword, save it were Coriantumr and Shiz, behold Shiz had fainted with the loss of blood.
30 And it came to pass that when Coriantumr had leaned upon his sword, that he rested a little, he smote off the head of Shiz.
31 And it came to pass that after he had smitten off the head of Shiz, that Shiz raised up on his hands and fell; and after that he had struggled for breath, he died. - Ether 15:28-31
A guy struggles for breath after his head is cut off? :rotfl:

That sounds like it was imagined by a teen-aged boy.

Kinda like the stories that you read in the supermarket checkout line, you know the kind. Here’s how I think that they did it/do it. All the writers sit around a big table.
Everybody smokes some really good weed. Then, whoever can come up with the most fantastic story, gets it published. That is the only possible answer.😃

Let’s start a new thread:

“Physical impossibilities from the book of Mormon”

God turned the clothing white and delightsome.

Thanks for the response. I will certainly read this article so I can understand what you are saying more clearly. I think we are somewhat talking around each other. Let me see though if I can restate what I think you are saying:
  1. Read and study the Bible. The wisdom from the book should teach you it is good.
  2. Have faith that the word is from God because it logically makes sense and teaches good things.
  3. Further evidence that it is the word of God because your life improves as you follow it’s teachings.
Is this a fair categorization? Please modify it or scrap it all together if I am offbase. I appreciate your time this has been interesting for me. I will read the article and perhaps I will better understand how you have come to believe the way you do.

Thanks,
Steve Erickson

Difficult to take care of them if the angel took them back. You see, if the gold plates were allowed to stay on earth and presented to the public, most of the catholics here would now be mormon since such plates would prove the lds church true. And of course, for a god that works on faith, such a happening would not occur.
Is this the “official” excuse of the mormon church???

I was told otherwise by a “bishop.”

It seems there is no one source for pat answers about talking chameleons and golden plates and seer stones.

Robert

PS: I love that wild hair reasoning: “for a god that[sic] works on faith, usch a happening would not occur.”

It is a good thing that the angel knew that Joe Smith could not be trusted with the “gold plates”. The old crook would have run them to the closest hock shop.

Islam claims the same things about the ‘leaves, stones and pieces of bark’ which the so-called FINAL book from Allah via an angel, of course, was dictated to that illiterate businessman, Mohammed.

Of course, the Koran was ‘translated’ decades AFTER Mohammed’s death as we see the BoM being ‘fine tuned’ (in its ORIGINAL language no less!!!) many many times after readers of it have questioned its origins, too.

Islam and Mormonism: two nationalistic businesses disguised as a “Revelatory” religion supplanting Judasim and Christianity.

I have been discussing ways of obtaining truth with another individual and just noticed this post.

I believe the verse explains when he placed the clothes on himself and not when the clothes were taken off Laban. Seems to me he could have taken the clothes off Laban prior to severing his head. Just a thought…

Not exactly:

1Nephi 4:19 And after I had smitten off his head with his own sword, I took the garments of Laban and put them upon mine own body; yea, even every whit; and I did gird on his armor about my loins.

You’d really have to be looking for a loophole to claim Nephi took the garments before he cut off the head of Laban.

Not to mention in the context of the story, it would make NO sense. “Hey Laban, strip down so I can steal your metal plates, lopp off your head and wear your clothes.” Yup. That’s what happened.

Where in the above statment does it say when he actually removed the clothes from Laban? To Rebecca’s point I believe he was drunk and completely in a stupor so it should have been no problem to remove his clothes before killing him.
