I think it is more likely that many Catholics understand what the Church teaches and simply disagree. Not all disobedience is from obstinence or ignorance or weakness - sometime it is a good faith disagreement.
Good faith disagreement? That is oxymoroanic, isn’t it? That sounds more like bad faith to me.

The same reason the Church is always overflowing on Christmas and Easter and you have to get there an hour early if yo want to get a seat?
I always have the opinion that it’s great to see people in church who don’t come there often, regardless of the reason. If people come to church for any reason, good for them!

I think some Catholics love to tell others their in mortal sin. They look for reasons and seem gleeful about it. I just don’t get it.
Some, sure.

Most, no.

I say things on this anonymous forum I would never say to a person face-to-face.

That is a really horrible thing to say. Morbid.

I can’t speak for anybody else, but the reason why I mention that something is grave matter is because I recognize that the other person just may not have understood it.

And if one person, just one person, comes to reform his/her life as a result or even gets a slight twang of conscience hitting him/her, Blessed be God. (Keeping in mind that this one person is as likely to be a lurker as an active participant)

When people are on fire I tell them to stop, drop and roll. I don’t take pleasure in it, nor do I desire to let them immolate themselves by keeping silent.

The seven spiritual works of mercy:

  1. *]Counsel the doubtful.
    *]Instruct the ignorant.
    *]Admonish sinners.
    *]Comfort the afflicted.
    *]Forgive offenses.
    *]Bear wrongs patiently.
*]Pray for the living and the dead.

👍

I was very pleased to see a woman with her two sons at Mass this morning who obviously did not come to Church often. I only noticed them because the boys sat in front of me, while Mom sat across the aisle. They arrived a half hour late and didn’t know when to sit, kneel, etc., and the boys were chewing gum, but were quiet and otherwise well-behaved and followed along by watching others. I prayed that the Holy Spirit would move the family to return to weekly Mass, to return to the faith. The Holy Spirit was already working in them, or at least Mom to get them all to Church this morning, so I prayed for them all. If one bothers to come to Mass on Palm Sunday, on Easter and Christmas, why not come all the way Home?

I was pleased to see that they knew enough and were conscientious enough to not receive Holy Communion.

It makes them feel more holy if they can point out someone else’s sin. It validates them to point to someone else and claim that someone else isn’t as good as they are. 🤷

Just my own observations, but …

Another thing I’ve noticed is that when someone feels burdened by a particular rule or law, they are more pushy about others following that particular rule or law. I think there’s something real about the saying, “misery loves company” with regards to this. I find that people who are burdened by a particular rule or law, and who are pushy about others following, tend to be very bitter about the other person not following the rules because they themselves are reluctantly following it themselves. They are compelled by guilt or even fear to follow the rules, and not happy, and can’t stand to see others being noncompliant and thus “free” from the same burden.

Those who truly believe in a particular rule or law, and follow it with their hearts, are less fire and brimstone, and more charitable to those who don’t follow that same particular rule or law. I also find that those people who are actually happy to be compliant are more successful in getting others to jump on the bandwagon and become compliant believers than the miserable ones who come on with fire and brimstone.

I mean really, who wants to be bitter and miserable? So knowing that people wouldn’t voluntarily choose to be bitter and miserable, why on earth would someone follow another person’s ‘dedication?’ to a particular rule or teaching when that person is negative, judgemental, confrontational, accusatory and pushy?

It’s much easier to follow someone who shows their dedication with honesty because it shines from them in a way that stands out.

Generally this charge is leveled by people who are doing something they know is wrong and get uncomfortable when others point out

It’s funny, I don’t see it that way at all. I think Rence is dead on accurate. That charge is leveled when people are being self-righteous. They want to make sure that everyone knows that they are holy and everyone else isn’t.

I think we just see it differently.

It is self righteous to affirm the teachings of the Church???

Your “observations” have no merit.

Confirm others in their sin by denying sin, or not admonishing the sinner is not an act of charity but an act of malice.

No, but I think it’s more how you do it. Many people seem arrogant/smug/or self righteous when they do.

People seem to think because sin “X” isn’t a vice of theirs-it’s their duty to preach about it, and everybody is lesser because of it.

I said “seem to think”. I’m no mind reader. I think it’s naive to think that everyone who preaches against personal sin doesn’t have another motive.

Maybe it has nothing to do with them thinking about themselves at all? Maybe they just don’t like to see God’s laws ignored and sometimes flouted, to see the teachings of Holy Mother Church ignored?

This.

Perhaps your right. I don’t claim to know peoples motives. It’s just something I’ve personally noticed.
