This is politics? I though college was about education, free flow of ideas, etc. Not indoctrination like the “professor” was obviously doing. I’ve had teachers like the prof. even in high school. Believe me, they weren’t talented.

So - liberalism is merely the logical talent of being an educator? So all of those (who are in the minority) who are not liberal are not talented? Your argument, Mickey, is an example of valid but “unsound” logic: in that your premise is not true. My philosophy professor who taught logic 1 was a liberal - he used to rip on Dan Quayle - but he never did the kind of thing that this professor Penn did. He was a good teacher - a liberal to be sure - but he taught logic and didn’t use his position to indoctrinate or engage in angry political outbursts. And he was pretty funny.

A lot to be said for humor. As for conservative professors not being talented. I’d have to take your word for that.

Now about this Penn fellow. Judging by his quick removal from teaching students. This is not Mr.Penn’s first time in the hurt locker.

Are you being “humorous” or do you really think there aren’t many talented conservative professors out there?

Fox news has a product to sell, and young Evan has had his 15 minutes. 😉

How dare Evan voice his opinion about a professor who has been suspended sarcasm

Do you think a conservative professor should have the right to talk diatribe in a college class about liberals?

You said it several times, don’t try and back track now. A simple apology would have been better.
I don’t believe I am backtracking or apologizing. I pointed out that you aren’t dealing in reality if you don’t believe academia his an obvious liberal bias, and it isn’t in anyway comparable, anecdotally for most people, or statistically for all people, to a conservative bias.

The purpose of this board is discuss and debate world news. If you want apologies from people who have done nothing wrong, you are probably in the wrong place.

I watched the video. I’m not a College Boy so to speak. But I’ve had to sit through way too many classes in my career. So, from that perspective the students seemed to take it all in stride. The things he said would be food for thought only.

Personally, I don’t approve of bad talking someone’s wife. It does show a certain weakness of character in by book. But politics is any ugly business anyway you slice it. When you bring it up feathers will get rustled.

Now why Educators seem to lean towards the left is an interesting question. Mechanics tend to be mechanical, and -]firefighters tend to be /-] Librarians tend to be organized. I guess it’s just a natural flow of individual talents. Each day I see a variety of people doing a variety of jobs. Many seem perfectly suited to their chosen occupation. Sometimes not so much. I think if someone is lucky enough to find a profession that’s suits their talents that’s a blessing. So, if after Mr.Penn’s class student were critical thinkers then he’s done a good job by them.
You find broadbrush insults of people you disagree with critical thinking? Very Catholic of you. If he was such a critical thinker, he’d explain his point and ask for a rebuttal rather than throw out labels and pejoratives. He’s a bully using a bully pulpit, regardless of ideology.

You were rude. You didn’t have to say that I’m not in reality. That’s rude and has nothing to do with this post. This is the last time I will ever be typing to you.

Kendra, “Let’s deal in reality” is not rude. Its more a way of saying something like, “how can you not see the obvious bias in academia” or some such. I have seen my share of rude posts on these forums and that wasn’t one.

Thanks, and I was certainly not trying to be rude. It is an often used expression. Regardless Kendra, I can certainly apologize if that is how you took it. No need to make enemies over something like that.

The liberal bias of higher education is a statement of fact, not opinion.

It is either correct, or incorrect. If it is correct, then it is a reality to be dealt with. If it is false, then contrary statistics really ought to be posted in order to dispel it is as being untrue.

The belief in a liberal bias lies in statistics which show the arts and the humanities to be almost exclusively taught by people who are to the left side of the political spectrum. I simply see that as the reality that we have to deal with when we sign up for an education, or our children do.
Statement of fact, or noting that facts are what define reality, are not acts of rudeness. For sure, liberals who consider themselves bastions of tolerance and open-mindedness, do not like to note just how uniform and one-sided their own world has become, but it is a world very much of their own making.

It is a good thing that a professor who is particularly obnoxious in his leftist bias goes against the sensitivities of his liberal colleagues. Organizations like Campus Watch and actions like David Horowitz’s Academic Bill of Rights show a fuller picture of a problem that the OP only touches upon.

Because one guy flips out and people make it seem like it is the norm. It isn’t and he is out of the classroom this semester and the school doesn’t know what they are going to do with him next semester. Out of the thousands of professors I have only heard of a few who have snapped and wigged out in class.** I never experienced it and either has anyone close to me. ** Obviously, what this guy did IS NOT the norm.

Then you misunderstood me, Kendra. I was making the point that there is a liberal/left bias in academia - NOT that they all flip out (as you call it) like the professor Penn did. I do, however, think the fact that the professor thought he could “flip out” and not face any consequences speaks volumes about the entrenched liberal/left atmosphere - not in all colleges as you rightly point out, but in most.

Sorry for not making myself clear on this point.

But that isn’t what you said.

I went to college and I never had some wacko Liberal as a professor. People in college are usually voting age. If a professor is influencing them as easily as so many think, then they shouldn’t be voting anyway. Some Republicans make it seem like no one says anything bad about Democrats. Politics is a game and both teams have it out for the other. I’m not going to get all up in arms because some professor made rude comments. He is out of the classroom this semester and the university doesn’t know what they are going to do with him next semester. This isn’t a middle school classroom that he was teaching, he was teaching adults. If college-aged people don’t have a backbone and can’t form an opinion on their own so sad for them, it isn’t some professor that they see 3 hours a week fault.*

You implied that because you haven’t had a wacko" liberal as a professor it isn’t an issue, and that somehow Republicans making rude comments about democrats outside of academics justifies a professor using a bully pulpit to defame an entire group of voters, and potentially intimidate students who may not agree with him but also do not want to be punished in terms of grades.

You also decried students lacking backbone as their own fault, but this is where you aren’t being realistic. Whether or not you personally believe students should be able to be influenced is irrelevant to the fact that they are and have been since college tuition began.

How many people formulate worldviews based on experiences in college? A great many. There have been numerous cases and studies highlighting a liberal bias, but none doing the same for a conservative bias in academia. Also, he didn’t engage in debate or critical thinking, he essentially mocked half the country and insulted them with name calling. That alone should be enough to fire him.

Fore pete’s sake, Rush Limbaugh got flamed for calling Sandra Fluke a name, and women’s groups were up in arms over him, and he is a radio personality, not a educator paid by the parents. So should we care, or not?

The left likes to preach a tone of civility and speak against hateful rhetoric (see the Arizona Giffords shooting and the angst over civility in that incident) and yet very rarely do I see them walk the walk. Too many examples of loudmouth blowhard pseudo-intellectuals complaining about mean the right is, and then calling them names in the same breath.

You see I thought he was starting/setting a tone of dialog that would last the semester. I’m not politically correct in any way shape or form. (unless it serves my purpose at the moment)
So insults generally don’t distract me from the topic. Sometimes they are funny. When they aren’t I just look past them. I think being exposed to ideas, particularly ones you don’t agree with is helpful to forming your own opinions. You get to analyze them, and find any faults that lay under the surface. While I don’t support either political party. I do think that liberal ideas sell better.

As for Penn being a bully. Considering how quickly they pulled him. I’m pretty sure this is not his first trip to the hurt locker. So, I’m reluctant to defend him. But I’ll defend his right to teach in his own however unique style. Assuming that learning occurs. Do you have proof that he fails to teach?

Liberal ideas do sell better, for sure. Free stuff and promises that the government will take care of you sells a whole lot better than the conservative message that it is your job to take care of yourself.

Mickey, you’re confusing teaching with indoctrination. If this was a good teacher, and if what he did was to inspire critical thinking, then he wouldn’t go off on tirades based on his own politics. Furthermore, the classroom is often a one-sided situation: what student would want to present a different point of view from the teacher in such a hostile, narrow minded environment??? A student would be justified in thinking that a teacher like Penn would negatively judge conservatives who speak out and praise those who agree with him.

Critical thinking flourishes in an environment in which students feel like they won’t be ridiculed for their beliefs. What about the professor Penn’s tirade would make you think he would be anything but intolerant of a student who espouses conservative beliefs?

It’s interesting which part you pick to reply to. (By the way that reply of yours is simply rhetoric.)

Teaching/indoctrination.
I guess that is a matter of opinion. Are Catholics taught or indoctrinated? I like to think we are indoctrinated into the truth. But not everyone does. We certainly can’t be taught what god thinks, only what he wants from us.

As for Penn. Again, I’m reluctant to defend him. A lot of what I saw him say on the video was in fact the truth. He picked a few topics that made the republicans struggle for political control look heinous. If they don’t want people to be aware of these things then they aught not to do them.
