yes and saying that a dozen verse were revealed because Muhammad did not want to drink honey must be a joke, otherwise it is a catastrophical insult of human intelligence and he who might believe in it will believe in absolutely anything.

OK - 66.1-4 states the following and nothing about not drinking honey:

2: Allah has already ordained for you (O men), the dissolution of your oaths. And Allah is your Maula (Lord, or Master, or Protector, etc.) and He is the All-Knower, the All-Wise.

3: And (remember) when the Prophet (SAW) disclosed a matter in confidence to one of his wives (Hafsah), so when she told it (to another i.e. 'Aishah), and Allah made it known to him, he informed part thereof and left a part. Then when he told her (Hafsah) thereof, she said: “Who told you this?” He said: “The All-Knower, the All-Aware (Allah) has told me”.

4: If you two (wives of the Prophet SAW, namely 'Aishah and Hafsah ÑÖì ) turn in repentance to Allah, (it will be better for you), your hearts are indeed so inclined (to oppose what the Prophet SAW likes), but if you help one another against him (Muhammad SAW), then verily, Allah is his Maula (Lord, or Master, or Protector, etc.), and Jibrael (Gabriel), and the righteous among the believers, and furthermore, the angels are his helpers.

Is it really true that Honey is haram? I never heard that, and in Indonesia, as far as I know, Muslims may drink honey. We are talking about honey bee, correct?

no, the theory about honey is that Allah was chastising Muhammad for swearing not to drink honey anymore !!

Here is Abdullah Yusuf Ali’s translation and commentary on the surah in question. (Isn’t his translation the most widely accepted by Muslims?):

**Muslim woman is right in explaining this verse. It was a gentle trick (lady like remark) of the wife ( I cannot find the exact word to describe it, It could be called a Niswani mazaaq) that upset the prophet.

I am not describing the whole story. But it was related to some smell coming from the mouth of the prophet. The wife asked if he had been eating some bad stuff ( I forget the name of it). There is some bad smell. The prophet said he had not eaten that thing. He had only eaten some honey. So, the wife joked and said " Then bees must have eaten that stuff."

The prophet stopped eating honey from that time. So he was reminded by Allah not to stop eating the pure and lawful things.

MuslimWoman is right in her expalantion.**
 
What answers do we have other than Allah sent a dozen verse to admonish Muhammad for not…drinking honey?

"Your Lord revealed to the bees: “Build dwellings in the mountains and the trees, and also in the structures which men erect. Then eat from every kind of fruit and travel the paths of your Lord, which have been made easy for you to follow.”

From inside them comes a drink of varying colours, containing healing for mankind. There is certainly a Sign in that for people who reflect" (16: 68)

Good morning,

There is no miracle here - honey has been used for over 5000 years by man so the koran and mohamad did not reveal anything new.

Yes sorry - I replied first and then I read your statement.
 
Last Friday in Arabic lessons we had to learn about the family of the prophet and the age of the rightly guided Caliphs. When the prophet’s family tree got to Ibrahim, the son of Muhammad and Maria the Copt, our instructor (an American, non-Muslim) said only “Ibrahim died as a child, leading to the absence of a succesor upon the death of the prophet”.

After the incredibly infuriating lecture had ended (infuriating because the professor had nerve to dismiss the misogyny in Islam by claiming that it is essentially no different than the treatement of women in Christianity! :mad:), I approached him privately to ask, in as snide a manner I could muster (so as to make it clear that I already knew the answer) if Maria the Copt was a wife of the prophet. He sort of smirked a bit and said “Well, she was one of his women…”

DISGUSTING.
 
A valid point, inJESUS, and one that I was also wondering as the lecture went on. I am going to have a private conversation with the professor at some point during the week. I am not against learning about the early history of Islam, if it can be shown to be relevant to a language class. This is not a history class. More importantly, neither is it a comparative religion class, so off the cuff remarks about misogyny in Christianity are not at all germane to the discussion. Hopefully I can convince the professor to at least leave Christianity alone. I’m fine with learning terms like “al-naby” or whatever, and the professor insisted that Muhammad’s family tree would provide an extremely culturally relevant context in which to reinforce the use of the kinship terms we had been learning ('am, ibn 'amy, etc). Again, fine, but leave Christianity out of it unless we will also have lessons on the Arab Christians and how great they are. That I can support 100%.
