Music Leader Thread Part III - Song Lists, Suggestions, and Comments

Oh, Benedictgal, I knew you’d know. But in my dilemma, I may have jumped tracks on the subject in my mind without ceasing the typing.

It is not the instrumental music on which I fret, I know the instrument, in our case a [gasp] Roland keyboard is only used to support the singing… It is the shutdown on choral pieces by our choir during masses during Lent. For example, during offertory on Good Friday our choir has occasionally sung “A Purple Robe”, our one and only tenor has sung “The Seven Last Words …”.

And while I’m thinking of it, thanks for your nota bene. I know Good Friday service is not a mass. Brain was ahead of my “thinking” 😊

EXCELLENT! Finally found a place to share ideas with other music ministers! I’m a youth choir music director and have chosen the following:

FEB 27 - EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

E: Though the Mountains May Fall
P: Turn to Me
C: Take Up Our Cross (Choose Christ)
R: Our God Is Here (Spirit & Song)

Right when I read the first reading I recognized the verse “would a mother forsake her child”–I recognized it went with a melody–its at the end of Though the Mountains May fall!

The Responsorial “Rest in God Alone” made me think of turning to God in hard times…so I picked “Turn to Me”.

“All That Is hidden” is also a great choice because of the Second reading’s mention of things that are ‘hidden’.

Last week we introduced a new song “Take Up Our Cross” which is about just that! When Jesus talks about not serving two masters, he challenges us to use our will to choose him by taking up our personal crosses. Check out this song! Perfect for Lent! Catchy refrain for the congregation—because its all about the congregation singing together to give God the most praise. I LOVE the bridge!!!

And lastly, “Our God Is Here”…because he is always present- thats especially important to remember when entering Lent…we walk with Jesus in the desert.

Those are some great selections! You can do so much with a full band with those choices. What instruments do you have in your choir?
 
How can I mediate this situation? Our priest is “hands off”, leaving the music to us. This dear woman is my friend, I always defer to her decision. But this year, she seems to have set new barriers for our choir and I am at a loss.

Perhaps less is more, especially during Lent. A suggestion is that you use your choral pieces for a Gathering Hymn before mass begins-if not included in the mass its self.

Someday, I would love to just sing the propers for both the Entrance and Communion.
 
Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time:

Offertory: Father, We Thank Thee Who Has Planted
Communion: Alleluia, Sing to Jesus
Recessional: Alleluia, Song of Gladness

This is the last Sunday we will sing the Alleluia, as Lent begins on March 9th.

I can’t believe Lent is just around the corner…I’m scared! :eek:
 
Speaking of Lent…it brings a time where my music director usually has one song we sing all five weeks. I hope it’s good, as last years “Leave the Past in Ashes” was not really my favorite.

Nothing captures Lent like Attende Domine. It reminds us that we are sinners and that we need God’s mercy. It is one of my favorite Lenten chants.

The other one is “O Sun of Justice.” It is quite beautiful and penitential. One could alternate betweeen the two. “Parce Domine” is also excellent.

“Again We Keep This Solemn Fast” and “The Glory of These 40 Days” are also excellent, as is “There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy.”

Next Sunday, I haven’t quite figured out yet, but I think I will go with The Church’s One Foundation for one hymn. I’m looking forward to Lent.
 
Here’s what we did this past Sunday (8th in OT)
Though the Mountains may fall (it was pretty embarassing. I had bumped the headstock on my Taylor and one of the B strings was way out of tune. It sounded really bad so I had to just use the bottom strings. Our Heavenly Father has delightful (if embarassing) ways of keeping us humble!.
For God alone my soul waits in silence By Scott Soper was our Responsorial.
The Deacon preached on 'Lillies of the field" so eloquently that I changed the Prep song from "Isaiah 49 to John Michael Talbot’s “Lillies of the Field.” We did 2 verses for prep and then the third as a meditation after Communion.
Communion were old favorites: Only in God and I have loved you.
We closed with Blest be the Lord. another old fav.
