I know this too late for anyone to consider this for today, Good Friday … but nonetheless … our wonderful tenor will sing “The Seven Last Words of Christ”, Anne Quigley, during the Veneration of the Cross of procession.

Last night our small choir sang “Ave verum corpus”, Mozart, at the beginning of the communion procession, followed by the assembly singing “Gifts of Finest Wheat”. “Lift High the Cross” was the gathering selection. “The Servant Song” for the Washing of Feet, and “Christians Let Us Love One Another” for the offertory. “Tantum ergo” for the procession to the Altar of Repose.

Tomorrow the Easter Vigil will be celebrated at our sister parish some 30 miles away. The usual list of Easter hymns will be sung. Our tiny 12 member choir is going on a “road trip” and will sing the verses for the readings and the verse for Gospel Allelulia. The choir knows the Mass of Creation and the Celtic Mass sung in parts, and that parish only knows Mass of Creation. Oh, yes, they also know the Celtic Alleluia. So, you can guess what the service music will be. Before dismissal, the choir will sing a capella “Surrexit Christus” by Pergolesi.

And then I am going to drive home those 30 miles and have a good long night’s rest.

No offense, but Christ the Lord is Risen Today is not a legitimate substitute for the the Sequence. As a liturgical act, the Sequence does not mean, “Sing any Easter-themed hymn you like here.” And am I understanding correctly that you’re going to somehow try to sing Christ the Lord is Risen Today to the tune of Victimae Paschali?

Are you speaking of Charles Wesley’s hymn? If so, no. The sequence he picked is the approved sequence text to the tune of “VICTIMAE PASCHALI”. It’s a hymn tune. It’s not Charles Wesley’s hymn.

Yes, I was thinking of the Wesley hymn. Try singing that to Victimae Paschali and you will see why I was so puzzled!

Haha. That’s why I started listing hymn tune names next to the hymns because of the confusion. I knew someone was going to ask a question about this! 😃

The arrangement of the sequence to the hymn tune, “VICTIMAE PASCHALI” is so beautiful. One of the best things to sing on Easter Sunday.

I had a seminarian friend help me. He did the Sequence and Veni Creator Spiritus. It was great!
 
The music at the Easter Sunday Masses at my parish was so beautiful. I just love the triumphant entrance with “Jesus Christ is Risen Today” and likewise, the triumphant recessional with “Alleluia! Alleluia!” to the tune of “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee”. Another favorite of mine would have to be “Christ is Risen from the Dead” by Rossini. All the hymns make you want to just belt them out, which I did.
 
Here in Glendale, Az the weather was absolutely beautiful for the Masses. There were sooooo many faithful attending. We had 2 overflow Masses in the hall!

We received a great Easter card.
On the front was a Priest saying 'Here is how I’ll begin my Easter Sunday Homily…"
then you open the card and he is looking out at a packed church and says “Where have you all been since Christmas???!!!”

Very funny…if a little sad. But they came and sang beautifully.

I added “Alleluia, Sing to Jesus” at the Vigil. I ran out of communion hymns. I don’t know about you, but sequences drive me nuts. I would love it if there was one melody we could do for all. As it is, I have to find something with suitable meter that is familiar if I am going to have everyone sing. Tantum ergo works for one of them and I think Staber Mater works for one.

Let me just throw this out, how does everyone else handle these sequences?
