Here is what I have planned for this coming Sunday:

Entrance Processional: Word of God, Come Down on Earth
Offertory: Father, We Thank Thee Who Hast Planted
Communion: Gift of Finest Wheat
Recessional: God Is My Great Desire

The Psalm will come from the Grail Psalter.

I wish we could trust the publishing houses, and actually follow their guides without distorting the liturgy.
I’m wondering if we ever will be. When you have their liturgical planning magazine suggesting “Christ, Be Our Light” as the Easter Proclamation, (Exsultet), you know something’s up.

Interesting…I’ve never heard of On Eagle’s Wings used as a psalm. Who in the world would use that?? I typically “Shepherd Me, O God” (Haugen), “Psalm of the Good Shepherd” (Landry), or “Shelter Me O God” (Hurd) at funerals.

On Eagle’s Wings is usually a communion hymn…
I actually would rather hear Alstott’s Psalm 23 from his book Respond and Acclaim than “On Eagle’s Wings.” I might have to make a point to have it sung on my funeral. 😃

“On Eagle’s Wings” probably is one of the most over-played pieces of music in the Catholic Church.
OCP is…well…OCP. We will never understand why they make the suggestions that they do. I use NPM as a guide.
They have to push the music that their composers composed. Once they do that, what do they get? $$$$!

I’m aware of that, I’m talking mainly where they suggest the song to be used. Who in the world would use (for example) “Sing of the Lord’s Goodness” for the Preparation?

On another note, trying to decide what Mass Settings I want my congregation to use…so many choices!! Anyone decided what settings they will use?

Some of their suggestions (like you have stated above) are totally inappropriate for what is happening at that time during Mass. “Sing of the Lord’s Goodness” is more appropriate for the processional or recessional, NOT the preparation of the gifts!

In regards to Mass settings, I think that it would be easier to start off with a revised Mass setting. Maybe use a revised setting from the First Sunday of Advent through the Baptism of Our Lord, and then teach a new setting when we go back into Ordinary Time?

This is a new one that I think is beautiful:

I would actually learn the default ICEL settings that are imbedded within the Roman Missal. These are easy. The composers’ revised settings do sound different, even musically, because the music had to be adapted to fit the text.

The ICEL settings are actually easier and can be sung without accompaniment.

I had to do a TV Mass with some choir members at the news station today. It will air on July 17. This is what the organist picked out:

Processional Hymn: #641 This Day God Gives Me BUNESSAN
Gloria: Recited
Responsorial Psalm: *Respond and Acclaim *Alstott
Gospel Acclamation: Respond and Acclaim Alstott
Preparation of the Gifts: #342 One Love Released Frenzel/Keil
Mass Setting: Heritage Mass Alstott
Communion Hymn: Instrumental
Recessional Hymn: #572 Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven LAUDA ANIMA

It was funny. She gave us the option of doing either Heritage Mass or Mass of Creation. Thankfully, everyone agreed on Heritage Mass!

What is everyone’s opinion on “Morning Has Broken” or “This Day God Gives Me”? For whatever reason, I don’t really care for the hymn tune to either of the hymns, and the words remind me of a Sunday School performance. :o

Processional Hymn: Lord for Tomorrow and Today
Preparation of the Gifts: See thy Children
Communion Hymn: Hail Holy Queen, enthroned Above!
Recessional Hymn: Mother Dear, o Pray for me!
For the OF.

Processional Hymn: Jesus, Lord, be Thou mine
Preparation of the Gifts: Hail! Patron of Erin!
Communion Hymn: Hail Mary, ever Blessed
Recessional Hymn: Guardian Angel, from Heaven so bright.

For High Mass with a Boys Choir

Introit: O Nata Lux de Lumine (Tallis)
Kyrie: Kyrie (Faure’s Requiem)
Gloria: Gloria (Faure’s Requiem)
Collect: Gregorian Chant
Epistle: Gregorian Chant
Gradual: Ave Mari Stella (Grieg)
Gospel: Gregorian Chant
Offertory: Attende Domine et Miserere
Miserere Mei, Domine (Lassus)
Preface: (Gregorian Chant)
Sanctus-Benedictus: Sanctus (Faure)
Pater Noster: Gregorian Chant
Agnus Dei: Agnus Dei (Faure)
Communion: Tantum Ergo
Post Communion: Gregorian Chant
Ita Missa Est: Gregorian Chant
Recessional: O Virgo prudentissima!

My ideal Masses. My suggestions.

My suggestions for the weekend following July 17:

Sunday, July 24, 2011 - Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year A

Processional Hymn: #570 Come, Christians, Join to Sing MADRID
Preparation of the Gifts: #513 Transfigure Us, O Lord Hurd
Communion Hymn: #366 Panis Angelicus SACRIS SOLEMNIIS/Lambillotte
Recessional Hymn: #559 Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee HYMN TO JOY

This is what my music director has:

Processional Hymn: #571 Sing, O Sing Schutte
Preparation of the Gifts: #623 All Good Gifts HEISLMAN
Communion Hymn: #359 I Received the Living God LIVING GOD
Recessional Hymn: #573 Sing of the Lord’s Goodness Sands

I don’t typically plan that far ahead, unless I’m going on vacation and my substitute needs music 😃

In my case, using a revised setting right away might confuse people a bit. Now that the Bishops have given the green light to start using the entire Mass Setting in September, it will make it easier to learn two different settings (perhaps one new and one revised) before Christmas. 🙂

I, unfortunately, had to attend a Catholic “Rock” Mass yesterday. The music was all electric-guitar, and needless to say, poor selections in music. Not to mention that the whole thing was outdoors in the heat.

Tonight:

All Creatures of Our God and King
Only This I Want
O Sacrament Most Holy
Lord of All Hopefulness (v. 3,4)
City of God

I just attended the funeral of one of our diocese’s priests who committed suicide last Sunday. Here is what the music was:

Mass of Christian Burial — Tuesday, July 12, 2011
Processional Hymn: I am the Bread of Life Toolan
Responsorial Psalm: Shepherd Me, O God Haugen
Gospel Acclamation: Celtic Alleluia Walker
Offertory Hymn: not sure, will edit later
Mass Setting: Mass of Creation Haugen
Communion Hymn: On Eagle’s Wings Joncas
Song of Praise: Ave Maria Schubert
Final Commedation: Salve, Regina

The Mass was beautiful. The Bishop was the principal celebrant. There were many, many concelebrating priests and several assisting deacons. The church the Mass was said in was the late priest’s home parish. Their parish’s choir sang. Many of the Knights of Columbus and members of the police department, both in full regalia, were there. I sat in the third row of unreserved seats, and the “third” row was actually in the back of the church! Also, as a little anecdote, my shoe fell off while trying to receive communion kneeling. Embarrassing? I think so! 😊 All in all, it was beautiful.

Here’s what my choir did tonight:

Optional Memorial of St. Henry — Wednesday, July 13, 2011
Processional: Praise to the Lord LOBE DEN HERREN
Responsorial Psalm: The Lord is kind and merciful (improvised chant)
Gospel Acclamation: Solemn Alleluia (verse, improvised chant)
Offertory: On a Hill Far Away OLD RUGGED CROSS
Great Amen: simple chant
Agnus Dei: ICEL Latin chant

Beautiful! I love “Praise to the Lord.”

I forgot to put in the Communion hymn. 🙂 Here’s the corrected version:
