I wash before mass, much same as wudo.

It helps me start my prayer focus.

I think it would be real cool if priests offered mass in lunch time so Catholics could skip lunch and pray instead.

Most people here in Oz would benefit from less work and more prayer.

Less work and more family time would be cool too.

Lets all pray well and stay well
I agree with you!
But unfortunately in this working climate, bosses etc are more demanding and wouldnt give us the time of day to do such a thing

Since you guys are talking about the prayer duration in Islam, I will give you our exact duration here in Saudi Arabia:

All five prayers from the call (azan) to finishing of the prayer, take about 35 minutes in the Mosque, all activities are halted during that period, which include: all companies, government agencies, hospitals, and pharmacies.

Officially this is what happens:
  • Public markets (e.g., supermarkets, restaurants, big malls), they should close before 15-20 minutes of prayer call (to allow inside shoppers to finish and leave, and to prevent new shoppers from entering), so practically if you arrive at such markets before 15 minutes, you won’t be able to enter, you have to wait 15+35 (50) minutes to do your shopping.
Here are some scenarios which had happened with me:
  • Once I took my mother to the hospital, and she was really in pain (although not emergency), and we arrived at the call of the Maghreb prayer (sunset prayer), but unfortunately, the nurse in the hospital informed us that the doctor has gone for the prayer, so we had to wait for him 35 minutes, tell he finished his claimed prayer at a nearby Mosque.
  • Once we were shopping in a supermarket, and before 20 minutes of Isha prayer (night prayer) we left the supermarket, and while in the car, my sister discovered that there was some inconsistency in the returned money from the cashier and the bill, so I jumped back to the supermarket just minutes before it closes, and I had a 5 minutes conversation with the cashier to resolve the issue, and when I tried to go back to my family, I found that they have closed the doors, and they won’t let me out, I told them that my family is waiting in the car, but no one cared, finally after shouting on the general manager, they let me out through the fire exists, so my family had to wait in the car, in the massive heat of SA for about 20 minutes.
  • Once we were eating in one of the restaurants, and before 20 minutes of Isha prayer, the waiter told us to finish eating & leave because Isha prayer is about to be called, we explained to him that we didn’t finish eating yet, but he threaten to call the “Haiaa” (a special government group which catch people if they do not pray or do something against Islamic law), so we had to leave.
The problem with all the above that most people will not take that time to pray, they only pray 10 minutes of that 35 minutes, the remaining time they will just stop working & stop answering phone calls because they consider it as official break, they might be in their offices but they won’t work, they will chit chat with each others, smoke, or eat.

We Muslims in Saudi Arabia are doing exactly as Lord Jesus said in (Luke 13:10-17), that is why I loved and was amazed by his words, every word he said in the Bible, I found a meaning for it in my life.

I made a valid and applicable comparison, why haven’t you? Having Christmas off is not the same as religious practices being performed several times a day, every day, in the workplace! Ditto for Sundays.

Jews often stop for afternoon prayers which take at a minimum 15 minutes. I’ve been in real estate closings where the attorney has to take a short break to pray. In NYC, there are many places within office buildings that are used to pray. Jews stop what they are doing and meet there for prayer. As far as I know, this has not adversely affected business.

I am saddened at (sam)s experience.

Especially that people do not use the time for prayer and do not consider human suffering important.

I Oz our mosque has a similar issue in the “precision” of prayer time.

We have two young brothers that are on the dole (welfare benefits).
I don’t think they have ever really worked real job and don’t help work around the mosque.

They are adamant that prayers should not be delayed. It says in the Quran i think i have read it. (I did not see it as a rigid rule just good advice and we are to know that we hold Allah first in serving each other.)

Our working brothers have it hard getting time of from work that varies as does the sun and often don’t make it to prayer.

These dogma focused brothers in their zest false piety actually had many brothers turn away from the mosque as they just want peace and are not willing to fight for the truth.

I have tried to get the young brothers to see Allah wants us to gather for prayer and it is difficult for boss to give lunch breaks at varying times so we should always gather at 2:10pm all year.
I have since hear other mosques in the capital city do this.

I only guess and cant speak for another’s heart that they substantiate themselves not working by being “religious”.
One of them has become the Imam of the mosque now and says due to his bad back can not work. He prays and works out at the gym. Tax payer $$ afford his doings.

Any of you who read my posts know i do not know quran and hadiths.
I challenge them often with questions about the homily and they are to me quite ignorant. I don’t know is common answer.
I tell them for me Allah wants men to discern and guide with heart truth.

Given my position what i say carries little weight at the time it is spoken but over time with lots of prayer we now only change Friday prayer i 30 minute blocks.
God is most high and eventually we will get to the 2:10pm time.

I think what i see is a mini version of (sam)s.
Allah will fix all of this but it takes time

God will bless our work if we stop it for prayer.

We work so much for bigger house, bigger car and less family but more to spend on them.

Even pagans say if we take break we will be more productive.

How much better to do it 4 Allah.

Humans use work as excuse for so much.

What did Jesus (pbwh) tell us to do with life?
Leave our work behind ?
Who is better way Mary or Marther?

Muslims want little time for prayer.

As someone who has been both employer and emloyed, I have no issue with granting someone time for prayer within reason. I usually allowed 15 minutes every two hours, which was overridden by lunch. In an eight hour shift, that would be two 15 minute breaks and a lunch break. I would have no issue with them using those breaks for prayer.

I would have a majjor issue if it caused me a lack of coverage or if there were other issues involved.

I am glad that you mentioned Mary and Martha. If you notice, Jesus said that there were TWO jobs needed, and Mary choose the better one and that would not be taken. In other words, someone has to work.

Thats what breaks are for… prayer time, not during work hours, there is plenty of time to pray around work time.

Vickie let me ask you what to think about this situation what about Catholics who want to use their brakes to go to confession or attend daily Mass to receive the Eucharist or to attend Mass on a holy day of obligation would you be against letting those workers have time off to do those things?
As long as people do those things on their own time, it’s okay! I don’t think that people should ask for permission to go to daily mass during working hours. If they want to go, they should do it before they go to work. Daily mass is not obligatory like Sunday mass is.

As for holy days of obligation, why do you think churches have masses AFTER working hours? That’s so those that can’t make it during the day can fulfill their obligation. Many churches have early masses too.

Sister Amy
as a Catholic I respect Islam and I respect the Quran in fact I have a Quran that sits right next to my Bibles and I treat it with the same respect as my Bibles. Catholicism teaches that we should RESPECT all religions AND WE SHOULD NOT JUDGE OTHERS IF WE DO WE OURSELVES WILL BE JUDGED I am dismayed at some of the comments I’ve seen in this form I have lots of Muslim friends I pray with them we wish each other blessings on our holidays and I agree with an earlier poster who said that he was tired of people saying that the Quran was simply made up. The way I think of it is that I’m going to treat all religions with respect because I don’t want to be judged on the day of judgment because I turn my back on people who were not of my religion and say negative things about them. In fact during Ramadan I where the hijab as my way of standing up against those who commit acts in the name of Islam because I know that is not what true Islam is all about when my fellow Catholics asked me why I’m wearing it (I wear it to Mass as well) it gives me a chance to explain what Islam truly teaches. I just wanted you to know that not all Catholics think Mohammed pbuh is not genuine or something like that. I’m learning Turkish as a second language and I’m currently learning how to pray in Turkish and yes I do pray At Mass in Turkish as well.
If you are a Catholic, you cannot believe in the Quran or Muhammad. Not judging others does not mean that we shouldn’t speak out when evil is committed.

Why do you wear the hijab? What do you know about what Islam really teaches? As a Catholic who believes that Jesus is the Son of God, you cannot believe that Muhammad was a genuine prophet! It sounds more to me like you’re conducting your own indoctrination campaign for Islam than anything else. How can you read the Quran and ignore the hatred preached there against the unbelievers?

Honestly, my mind boggles when I hear so-called Catholics keep praising Islam or Muhammad!

Here are some things to ponder. In a book called “The Imitation of Mary” by Alexander de Rouville, under the chapter “Duties of State” it says:

"To go to church, pray and visit the sick are fine things, but if you do them when the duties of your state require something far different of you, can you claim to be doing God’s will?

We need to pray and pray often; we need to pray always as far as possible; but if you neglect your domestic duties in order to pray, your prayer does not please God.

Many who do not think of themselves as acquiring great virtue will nonetheless be exalted higher in heaven than they may expect. It will be because of the fidelity they showed in even the smallest duties of their estate.

The book is a series of conversations between Mary and the believer.

In the chapter: How to Sanctify our Daily Toil and Actions" Mary replies this way:

Manual work and even occupations that are more burdensome and irksome cannot distract a spiritual and interior man with union with God.

A soul that is habitually recollected has a great facility in remembering God, even on occasions when the duties of state would seem inevitably to cause some dissipation of attention.

And

As for you, my child, when you work, tell Him that you find your delight in doing his will and that, even if your work were more laborious, you would make no less of an effort to please Him.

Offer Him your weariness in union for all that Jesus bore for your salvation.

If your work turns out well, bless Him who grants you success; if it does not succeed, accept the humiliations He allows so that you may practice patience. If you bring God into all your actions even those that seem smallest and most abject, they will be rendered sublime to the point of winning a higher degree of glory for you in heaven."

You are again taking other people as Lords besides your God. You are looking to the ideas and advice of the persons about your religion. Is that because you have no real guidance about prayer matters in your religion?. Like wise the christians have made their own laws about divorce etc. because bible did not guide them.

In your above post, you have taken support from some person and a book. Please try to find the answers to your problems in your sacred books. Or admit that the book does not guide you in the affairs of your prayers and duties of the state.

Planten, there is nothing called wipe your private parts using the right hand, clean your face using your right hand 3 times, say this or that after you go from bathroom ecc…Jesus does not care, rather despises the legalism that you use, thinking you are superiors to others…actually nothing seperates you from the pharisee of Jesus’ time and no matter what you say, you will not find it in Jesus’ church…if you think you need to be educated by your sheikh about what to do every minute you breath, know that Jesus says the Truth will set you free of meaningless legalism that make you judgmental and prisoner to the letter rather than free in the Spirit of the Law…Muhammad was simply another Arab pharisee of his time . Read Jesus’ words to those Pharisee.

How you love to misconstrue anything that does not agree with your views! By quoting from a Catholic book I am not taking other people as Lords besides God.

For your information, the book has the approval of James D. Mahoney, D.D. Vicar General, Archdiocese of New York.

What the book is trying to say is that we’re not supposed to neglect our duties in order to pray. If you don’t like that, fine. There are many other books beside the Bible that teach guidance about our faith, like the Catechism for instance.

InJesus, bravo! :clapping: That’s exactly the way I feel about it.

How do you feel about all these prayers at work business? I’ve been accused of being a Scrooge because of what I’ve posted. 😃
