My cousin developed prostate problems from stopping masturbating

My cousin and I are both Christians, we do not cuss, do our best to not even tell a little white lie, and we both tried to give up masturbating because that is the only the we struggle with.

From research, I’ve concluded watching porn is a sin, but I’m unclear on masturbation, although the bible says not to “spill your seed”, which could mean not to masturbate. But how does one become “excited” without pornography or the slightest, impure thought.

My cousin, went almost three months without masturbation, and developed severe prostate problems. His doctor told him he needed to masturbate more often.

My cousin prayed and prayed for God to keep his prostate in good health, but it got worse. He thought he might be able to “relieve” himself in his dreams, but that didn’t work either. Sure enough, he broke down and did what he had to and it did solve the problem.

I just don’t understand how something can be a sin, if it’s going to deteriorate your health, and even possibly kill you. Not treating a problem that is treatable is practically suicide, and that is one of the worst sins you can do.
Porn/Sex Addiction and Masturbation are not only mortal sins that can, if done with full knowledge and full consent and left unconfessed, send a person to Hell, they are also very dangerous to your temporal, physical health, contrary to what the popular, secular media and medicine may tell you.

Studies have shown that porn addiction is more dangerous and addictive than drugs like heroin, cocaine, meth, etc. Here is great article by neurosurgeon Donald L. Hilton, Jr that will help you to understand how Porn Addiction will literally destroy your brain: “Slave Master: How Pornography Drugs & Changes Your Brain” found here (drjudithreisman.com/archives/2010/07/slave_master_ho.html).

As to Masturbation, not only is it mortally sinful but it does have negative effects on your health. For one thing, it lowers your stamina and lowers your drive to accomplish things. Excessive masturbation (every day, or reguarly) puts a high amount of stress on your prostate. It’s also not good for your brain due to the feel-good chemicals (norepinephrine, epinephrine, dopamine, & serotonin among others) constantly being released. It’s basically like a drug that your brain gets hooked on and part of the reason why masturbation is so hard to stop. Again, see the above article by Dr. Hilton. If you ever tried to stop then you no doubt are familiar with the strong urge to masturbate again after a few days to a week. After this amount of time the effects of the feel-good chemicals wear off and you start going thru withdrawal symptoms. Frequent masturbation also weakens your immune system thus making you more succeptible to diseases, especially to colds and flus during the winter season. Frequent masturbation also weakens your tendons and ligaments, making it easier to strain a muscle or sprain a joint. Furthermore, you will start to get lower back pain if you continue to masturbate regularly. However you will most likely not experience this particular symptom until after you are past your teen years. Others will start to experience thinning hair on their heads as well. This is due to too much of your testosterone being converted into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which overloads your body. You also lose several miligrams of zinc every time you ejaculate. Zinc plays an important role in cell division and growth. It is essential for protein and DNA synthesis and helps in liver function and proper insulin activity and is essential for proper functioning of the sexual organs. Zinc is found in abundance in semen and the prostrate gland. Sexually active men require more zinc than women for the health of the reproductive organs and fertility Zinc is a component of many enzymes that help in the metabolism of lipids, carbohydrates and proteins and helps in wound healing.

So as you can see, masturbation is extremely bad, not only for your soul but also for your health. Masturbation is NOT the same as having sex because when a man has sexual intercourse with a woman, certain trace minerals and prostaglandins are absorbed from the female vaginal secretions which balance the zinc-loss effect and also there is a sort of natural suction during normal sex that helps drain all the semen during an ejaculation. Contrast this with masturbation, where a small portion of semen does not drain and ends up remaining in your system, which is not good.

Don’t expect to get the truth from the popular, secular media or medicine. The Porn Industry is one of the biggest businesses in our country and in the world. They have a vested interest in the consumers of their products staying ignorant of the damage that their products cause.

Find a good Catholic therapist if you feel that you are a sex addict. But first of all, get to confession and keep in mind that habitual sins of Lust almost always involve demonic oppression and if continued can open a door to demonic possession.

I

**I attend a non denomination church. I believe as long as anyone truly accepts Christ in their heart, is saved. Maybe one denomination has it more right than the other, but we’ll all know that someday.
**
From talking with my priest about the issue, he admires that I try to stop. He tells me God will grant me serenity in that area of my life, if it’s something I really can’t control.
Why do you have a priest if you aren’t Catholic? Why do you attend a non-denominational church if you are Catholic?

But again, there is a FINE line between drugs and masturbation. I can show you plenty of evidence where drugs can harm you.

I can show you evidence where masturbation is good for you prostate and lack of ejaculation is bad for your prostate.

Can you show me evidence that masturbation a couple times a week is bad for you?

Please do.
Puh-leeze. Ever tried ‘showing the evidence’ to an addict in full throes of their addiction that drugs or alcohol are bad for them? They don’t listen. They don’t want to listen. The evidence might be plain as day all around them, they will excuse and rationalize it away.

The best evidence I can offer is personal experience. Like the recovering addict I can truthfully say ‘I’ve been where you are, and it is only after having reached the other side that I can see how I was really harming myself by what I was doing.’

My life is better now, my health is better, my mind is clearer and sharper, my relationships with God and others are better as well. I am less selfish, less weak, less a slave to my physical appetites and more a master of myself. I am stronger and more generous and giving. It was really holding me back in more ways than I can count.

Drugs will deteriorate your health, and eventually kill you. Masturbation will not, it is good for your prostate, that is a fact.

I said in a previous topic that I thought, until just a little while ago, a priest, pastor, preacher, were the same thing.

Forgive me for my ignorance.

I’ve read that is due to feeling guilty about masturbating.

Why are you on this forum arguing on behalf of masturbation? If you think your cousin is giving himself a health benefit, why aren’t you off masturbating somewhere instead of posting this on a Catholic forum?

Masturbation only feels good for your prostate. Regular masturbation is actually very harmful to your prostate, and to your mind, and to your soul.

It is pretty obvious that you are looking only at evidence that fits your theory that “masturbation is good for me.” You are rationalizing. This is common among sex addicts. I know. I was there at one time.

If you want to know where porn/masturbation (or any drug addiction for that matter) ends up, try this little experiment: next time you are on your computer and get the urge to look at pornography, instead of searching for porn search Google images for pictures of people who have committed suicide. It’s not pretty but it shows you where drug addicts and sex addicts ultimately end up - dead. And if they don’t end up committing suicide, they usually, at the very least, end up destroying their lives and the lives of others.

I am back with one final post. I think. 🙂

According to the article from Psychology Today (July, 2010) at the link below, a recent study indicated that men who had masturbated very frequently had higher rates of prostate cancer later in life. Also, the article indicates there are other negative issues that result for men due to masturbation.

Ejaculation: How Often for Good Health?

Will an orgasm a day really keep the doctor away?

…The most recent study we saw found that men who had masturbated very frequently had slightly higher rates of prostate cancer later in life. However, only one set of results makes compelling headlines, so it’s not surprising that most men have only heard about research that went the other way. (Incidentally, communicable disease is a more likely prostate-cancer culprit than ejaculation frequency.)…

Neither will excessive gambling, and I could argue that all the money gamblers pump into the economy trickles back through it to benefit them in various ways, and so is good for them as well.

There are very real harms apart from harms to one’s health. I don’t think you quite seem to have grasped that fact.

There are studies that show for men over 50, masturbation may have a positive effect on the health of the prostate.
As Lily already pointed out, something healthy does not mean it is moral.

Secondly, what does excusing masturbation for prostate health do to society’s mental health and view of women? Surely you realize these folks are not masturbating while thinking about how their prostate health is improving. Rather, they are fantasizing about women in a way that deprives them of their ultimate dignity. Is that “healthy”? It is not.

I realize that addiction to pornography and masturbation is difficult to overcome, and telling an addict that it’s wrong beckons very emotional, irrational responses (such as that it’s “only” for their “health”), but justifying it is another thing.

Yes indeed, think of your poor prostate 😃

I’m sorry. I don’t do it that often. I try my best not to. I still get that guilty feeling. Maybe I’m just trying to convince myself it’s okay.

After what happened with my cousin, it’s hard to not want answers, or closure.

I keep trying to find answers that it can be acceptable.

It’s common sense you shouldn’t kill, over indulge in food, rape, or anything like that.

But when it’s something that is a lack of doing that affects out health is considered a sin, makes me wonder and confused.

That’s why I’m wondering, should we take what Christ says literally about adultery? Because adultery ties in with masturbation. One cannot become “aroused” without the slightest impure thought.

There’s other things he says that we do not take literally. Like cutting off our hands out plucking our eyes out if they cause us to sin. And wearing clothes with mixed fabrics, we do not take that literally.

I’m just think maybe what Christ meant was for a married man not to look at another woman in lust, and to not let those thoughts get out of control, like leading to rape and stuff.

You keep coming up with more and more things… lol Masturbation doesn’t cost money.

Gambling does, and can leave you with nothing.

Has it occurred to you that maybe you feel guilty because you SHOULD feel guilty because deep down you know it’s wrong?

A very strange first post, for someone to come onto this forum and try to defend masturbation, for their very first forum post.

There is a word for this.

Uh-huh…I have also noticed this.A lot of first time posters come here with very provocative questions:rolleyes:

Yes, all of the time, but my cousins indecent has got me fearful.

Let’s say I just completely stop, and I get prostate cancer and die.

I mean, likely, I would get treatment, but let’s say another individual who couldn’t afford treatment.

I hate to say it, but prayer alone didn’t work for my cousin. So should that person allow himself to get cancer of the prostate?
