Mary Gail 36,

I’ve been planning to learn how to do it, but after seeing so many people botch the quote function, I’m a little scared to try.

Easy peasy. You can always preview if it’s not what you intended to do…👍

Remember that when you’ve timed out and been logged out when writing a post and you try to preview your post and it tells you to log back in you will lose all that you’ve wrote. (At least that’s what’s happened to me before).

I kind of like Xantippe’s method :o

I think the main reason it gets messed up is because people accidentally erase one of the necessary characters. Just use the following format without the spaces
(Knowing the actual character format is helpful becuase it lets you put quotes from the CCC or other such sources in quotes too, you aren’t limited to quoting people’s posts)

Yeah… that is super frustrating, especially if you’ve just written a long post. But I’ve found that checking the always stay logged in box helps with that 😉

I said that I knew I was not welcome and would go away quietly because I was accused of presenting “off topic, political” views, by a certain forum “elder” (whatever that’s supposed to mean), respecting that this site moderates rather heavily.

Then I see the last six posts are so blatantly off topic and not one word from so called moderator is issued.

Me thinks the self proclaimed moderator is taking it upon oneself to control the content and not allow points that are “uncomfortable” in their personal view.

I’m appalled at the censorship being foisted upon others, like myself that have unconventional views, by forum bullies. AKA trolls.

Just pointing out the blatant “hypocracy”. Remember the splinter in the eye once in a while.

theplummer,

Start your own thread.

It’s not censorship to tell you to start a thread to air your ideas. Your thread can have a title that actually reflects the content (“Church should stop performing marriages”) and then you can have a lively discussion in your thread.

That’s the very opposite of censorship to tell you to do that–you’ll get much more discussion that way.

It may feel unfair that other OT material passes without comment, but it’s just very off-hand, light stuff.

Again, start your own thread.

When you’re asked to start a new thread, that is recognition that you have made a point worthy of an entirely different discussion. Why you resent this recognition is a bit unclear.

Are you saying that you agree with my direction and advice to the OP?

I believe you responded to my original response to you with “point taken”? Now I’m not so sure that it was.

The OP is trying to consider his own immediate problem. Please stick with that, and not stray into larger questions, lest he be left on the sidelines as the discussion leaves him behind. This is not a lot to ask.

By the way, if you have ideas about how to change marriage, the most capable posters will be at the Liturgy and Sacraments forum.

Just by the way (BTW), “Forum Elder” means that in 15,000 posts I have gained some idea about how this forum operates that you have not had the opportunity to gain yet. You don’t have to repeat all the mistakes I had to make in order to get there.

EasterJoy, I asked you a question and you failed to answer. I’ll ask again, do you agree with my advise to the OP OR NOT?

I asked the first time and am now asking again, as it seems like you are avoiding the point.

The quote below is why I ask. Now you appear to be back peddling.
Do remember, too, that people who have been the innocent victims of divorce read your posts, not to mention those who are culpable for immorally divorcing their spouses, but who have since repented. They do not need to hear you spouting off that their efforts
Seems like you were trying to place the “Church of Nice” control on me. Don’t offend anyone with the truth form of censorship.

As far as 15k posts giving your own self proclaimed authority. Maybe you should “check your privilage”.

BTW, seems to me that you are still making mistakes, even with all your “experience”.

You seem to believe you can make demands of conversational partners. It is not so.

Let me demonstrate…

I’m not EasterJoy, but here is a response.
  1. As to agreeing with you, I can’t remember what your particular advice was. As to the marriage boycott stuff, it’s a terrible idea, but we can discuss it at length in a new thread. Everybody loves a new thread!
  2. You aren’t being censored, just being asked (repeatedly) to express yourself in a new thread.
  3. You can post 15k posts, too, if you stick around long enough. No special privilege there.
  4. It’s kind of weird to complain about “cultural Marxism” and then use the “check your privilege” language. In case you didn’t know, that’s actual cultural Marxist talk.

Two can play that game.

On to further “off topic political” points.

You cited cannon law requiring Catholics to follow the law of the land, with regards to obtaining marriage laws.

Since you brought up the “off topic” point, I feel entitled to respond.

I agree with Cannon Law, yet you seem to be misrepresenting it in this context.

Actually, we Catholics are to follow JUST laws. I posit to you that marriage laws in the United States are NOT just, just as abortion laws are equally unjust. Should we apply your blanket quote of Cannon Law in that sense also? I know you won’t answer, so I place the question in that of a rhetorical nature.

Why is it that the Church readily recognizes a destructive law such as abortion, yet remains silent, even capitulates to the claim of authority of the state? I believe the latter is just as destructive as the former, especially when the considerations of all the collateral damage are applied.

Another question that I doubt you will answer: How do you feel about 1 Cor. 14:34, Ephesians 6:4, & Titus 2:4?

Okay so if I’m to understand you here, it would appear that if one wants to get a wife or a husband, one should not really care about chastity? I mean, the problem with trying to live chastely in our degenerate culture is that you have to avoid a lot of people and situations, and this necessarily makes you less interesting to women than men like this charming secular man you’ve married, who has spent time with other people and women, learning the ways of the world and how to attract women.

Furthermore, it appears that while people like OP are in the library studying or whatever to avoid sexual temptation, in all likelihood, their future spouse will be out there cavorting with charming secular people having lots of sex like OP’s girlfriend did, so really, what’s the point in following the narrow path if all you’re going to get is a wife or husband who didn’t really care enough about their conscience and our Lord to live chastely, and whom they will not even “deserve” in the first place?

(although according to you single people who attempt to follow our Lord Jesus Christ and live chastely instead of getting into romantic relationships and into situations of opportunity for hot sex with charming secular men or women, they don’t know what sexual temptation really is so they should just shut up )

So basically, chastity is unimportant, what is important for attracting people is being charming and having lots of sexual experience, is this the thrust of your post?
That’s a complete caricature of what she said. What she said is that this gentleman is chaste and had been for some time. You are promoting a sub-Christian view of chastity in which what matters is physical virginity. True Christian chastity, like every other Christian virtue, is about love–it’s about loving God with all your heart and your neighbor as yourself, and restraining your physical desires so that they conform with the law of love.

Or, in the pungent words of the medieval poet William Langland, “Chastity without charity shall be chained in hell.”

I’m not opposed to starting a new thread. What I’m opposed to is the shaming tone placed upon me by EasterJoy.

As far as starting a new thread, I will, when I have all my “ducks in a row” so to speak.

Why would I want to post 15k posts, so I can claim some authority that with which I do not have?

As far as the association of “check your privilage” being Cultural Marxism language, GREAT CATCH. You saw the irony of my words.

Please stop. You are hijacking the OP’s thread which is rude and against forum rules. You’re making the OP’s problem all about you and your issues with marriage, and that’s not ok. Trying to bait other posters into helping you hijack the thread is even worse.

Either start your own thread, where we will be happy to read and respond to your ideas, or drop the subject.

Realize that the federal and state government has co-opted the word “marriage” and has seized it for their own purposes, redefined its meaning, and claims absolute authority over it.
Seems to be a weighty subject in its own right, but largely unrelated to the topic of this thread. Happy to discuss on a new thread.

Gotta say…I have great respect for many on this thread. However, I am singularly unimpressed by those whose arguments can be distilled to “I’m correct because I post a lot.” We can be proud of lots of things, but the sheer number of posts we’ve posted seems somewhat unimportant to me. For anyone who argues that their number of posts equals “elder” status which equals authority, some might respond with “with all those posts, how have you had time to do anything other than sit at a computer??”

bye…

I am sorry I offended you. Let me clarify:

He posted: forum “elder” (whatever that’s supposed to mean)

I noted: *Just by the way (BTW), “Forum Elder” means that in 15,000 posts I have gained some idea about how this forum operates that you have not had the opportunity to gain yet. You don’t have to repeat all the mistakes I had to make in order to get there. *

IOW, “Forum Elder” is an odometer thing. If you post enough times without being told you are not welcome to post any more because you have failed to learn and obey the rules, one day it just shows up by your name. I didn’t mean to put anyone down or inflate the value of my opinion by noting that experience has taught me a few things since I started here. I only meant to say that I’m well-acquainted with forum rules and forum etiquette, which new posters are not expected to know automatically. I hope that helps.
