The entire passage does not effect what I said because I was not commenting about judging people…but that we are to be careful with the environment we create for our children.
I meant we are not duty-bound to judge a public library. The public library is the world. We are only bound to judge whether the library is appropriate for us and whether this material or that is appropriate for us.

When the world tries to require us to accept things for ourselves or our children that are not acceptable, of course we have to refuse to accept that. If they want to take that as uncharitable, that is for us to educate them, not just give in to their understanding.

Um, do you know why people get upset about banned books?

So what if a library has books on Gays and Lesbians. Jesus loves them too, you know.

Libraries also have books on demonology and the devil, should they be burned? Theologians study demonology for the sake of knowledge.

I mean sorry dude but you need to understand that knowledge is free, even if such knowledge is something you don’t agree with.

My advice is pass by those books and look into the books you want. Mind over matter. But you really have no right to suggest those books should be removed.

Well sad. Librarians are affected by the world and “perception management.” Supposed experts, now called Thought Leaders, are one source of influence.

How we, children to adults, are affected by what we find in libraries can be profound. There was a time where I could pick up just about any book and be assured that its content was suitable to read. Now, that’s very gradually becoming not the case. I find myself studying various reviews and name - as opposed to anonymous - resources for more information before I buy. This is a necessity because what is “normal” is being changed. What is “acceptable” is being changed.

We are actually talking about children here…there are children sections and parental ratings for a reason to protect children from things that are inappropriate.

Just sayin’ I am not a dude 😉

Mind over matter, avoid looking without looking sounds like some kind of Jedi force theology 🙂 livin’ up a psychosomatic life style…just psych yourself out to not look? Mind over matter was what I thought too before I became a Christian. It does not work. I know a young lady who tried to ignore her ex-spouses abuse but it just never seemed to stop and she thought she could endure it (mind over matter) for the children, thinking he would never hurt the children, then one day she discovered he hurt the children too…then she really suffered. Often we are not as smart as we think we are. Jesus is Spirit over matter.

Still, librarians are also susceptible to what gets checked out and what their patrons ask them to acquire. I have been pleasantly surprised at the titles I could borrow from our local public library system. They want check-outs and they want to buy materials that people want to borrow. That is evidence that their selections have been good ones.

I fight this is a very silly way. When I see a book that I object to, I do not harm it in any way. I just carefully hide it behind the other books on the shelf hoping that for awhile it will at least it is not visible. I expect there are still some of these books carefully hidden behind books. I don’t do this very often but it is a little game I like to play.
Actually, I do this too. If we can’t win over this situation, then at least we’ll do it our secret little way, right?😉

No child is going to become gay by seeing or reading Heather Has Two Mommies. A child may, however, come to respect the child at the center of this kind of story. Pretending such families don’t exist isn’t the same as explaining to a child why he or she should respect all members of the family while rejecting the lifestyle for himself.

I worked for many years as a children’s librarian in a public library. And I dealt with my share of parents complaining about books, including those featuring gay or lesbian families. Rarely do such complaints amount to anything – learn more about the ALA to understand why. Public libraries are one of the last remaining constitutionally guaranteed spaces. Trying to push certain books or people out of them violates the purpose for which they were created. Go ahead and create a Christian or Catholic library. But let’s not suggest that there’s something immoral about permitting Catholic children to frequent public libraries.

Your little game, as you call it, makes a librarian’s job exceedingly difficult and may result in items being identified as lost. Taxpayers pay for those replacements. You’re also creating problems for college students like mine, who are often assigned the task of reading and analyzing controversial children’s books.

Teaching children that a sinful lifestyle is not ok. Also, do you think humans are impervious to imprinting? Some children grow up only thinking that husbands kiss wives…this book teaches that men and men get married and thus is it too hard do you think for a child who reads it may naturally think all the things that men and women do as married couples that men and men do also? I pray that the children will be protected from this, in Jesus name amen.

Did anyone ever tell you that scientific studies show that homosexuality is environmental?

Men do now marry other men and women do now marry other women. I’m interested to know how you propose to keep this a secret from children.

We as Catholics teach that they do not…by definition same sex cannot marry. They may say they are married and have legally claimed to be but our faith and science tells us that is not the way that men and women are suppose to behave meaning not natural and God does not bind them in marraige. I hope that gay marriage along with other sexual moralities will not need to be discussed as children…we are talking 5 years old here…the fact that you suggest discussing such a topic with a 5 year old is awful, God have mercy that we may protect our children. I pray that God will guide us and that the children through grace may be protected from such adult teachings. We also hope that this law will be revoked. Praying for a moral president and gov leaders. Praying for Catholics who are not cynical but proactive in helping and do what is right and no compensating for what is wrong. In Jesus name, amen.

No. They do not.
I can teach my children what sacramental marriage is and why it’s important. I also need to prepare them to meet those involved in same-sex marriages in the world around them. Repeatedly saying same-sex marriage isn’t marriage is pretty useless practically speaking now that it’s legal everywhere. It makes far more sense to say that same-sex marriage is not Catholic or sacramental.

That society purports a harmful lie does not make saying that it’s a lie useless. Before he was pope Francis described homosexual households with children as child abuse. So should books about the sex trade be in the children’s section too? Because showing children the lie of homosexuality and passing it off as a legitimate family is beyond what they can decipher. Heather has two mommies has no place in children’s grasps. But in general libraries do a good job of handeling this well. Though knowing your position and your experience at a library does give me MORE pause.

One of the reasons I don’t support the idea of a Catholic library per se is that a library for many is more than a pile of books. It is a craft place, a story time place, a resource place, a community place. But we should have that without it being a circus of the hedonistic for kids.

Except by definition of marriage you are contradicting yourself. You can either teach your children that killing their babies is acceptable because people do it all the time or you can teach them that it is not…despite how prevalent G&L is 5 years old is not the appropriate time to discuss it…it is environmental and it may be that imprinting is occurring at a young age that is causing so many more G&L. By exposing them to G&L at such a young age you may be increasing their risk of imprinting G&L relationships.

When the Nazis took over a lot of people just went along with whatever the government did. However, some would not compromise their morals or what they teach their children. Notice that German law at this time preventing parents from homeschooling. They wanted the children to learn government thought only. Now consider the recent speech by president Obama speaking out against private schools saying that everyone should be in public schools to be more cooperative.

And if a child (God forbid) were to develop a sexual identity problem in a Christian home that teaches same sex is immoral, some states are leaning toward removing the children from the home…as though parents do not have the right to teach their children their moral beliefs and knowledge in science.

Some court reduces children’s visitation from their parent for teaching one marriage in the eyes of God…next it may be for teaching that same-sex relationships are immoral.

The point is the language used. Denying that the rest of the community uses the term marriage when referring to same-sex marriage is like putting my fingers in my ears and singing loudly – and denying this fact to my children encourages them to do the same. Explain to children that the community has redefined marriage and why this is objectionable. But don’t prepare them to meet those living in same-sex marriages and immediately cry out, “That’s not marriage!” That’s fruitless, rude, and makes more enemies of Christianity.
So should books about the sex trade be in the children’s section too?
Yes. And surprise (and gasp), they’re already there. I’m not sure how you think critical thinking is taught or learned but it isn’t through prohibition.

If you think I’m sort of anomaly, you don’t know librarians at all.
