If my wife had given up on me because I was Lutheran and she was Catholic, I would not be Catholic right now.

I was adamant about NOT converting. But, I learned a lot about Catholic apologetics and I came around.

Teach her about your faith, and she may come around too. But, for sure, religion is not a compromise.

We are ready to take the next step in our relationship, but we want to figure out our religion. She will not become Catholic but wants to compromise and is open to find a mutual religion. She is very intrigued with the Luthern religion. I am in a tough situation and struggling trying to decide what I want. I dont know much about any religion besides Catholicism. I dont want this issue to break up our relationship and we are trying hard to figure this all out. Any advice?
Why do you need to come to a compromise? Why can’t you both just keep your respective religions. The Lutheran Church is very similar to the Catholic Church as far as I have seen at least during service. However in doctrine, it is quite different. Perhaps you should show your girlfriend the Bible. Show her passages that contradict Protestantism, and ask her to find one that refutes Catholicism. I’ve tried they don’t exist.

I am the girlfriend and quite frankly I am shocked by some of the responses. You all make me out to be this horrible person when you know nothing about me or my beliefs. I have grown up methodist and my boyfriend has grown up catholic. We have a very serious relationship with marriage and children in our future. However, we feel that before we take that next step in our lives that we need to discuss our differences in religion. A lot of you advised him to either dump me or educate me and convert me to catholicism. Quite frankly if those are the two solutions then this website is not very helpful because neither of those are an option!!! As for church "shopping’ you make it out to sound like this horrible thing. It is a time for us to educate ourselves in different religions and their beliefs…To see and experience how they worship. How many of you have done the same to educate yourselves in other religions or are you just so close minded in believing that your religion is the only “TRUE” religion that you have never done any research? How many of you are catholic because that is the way you were raised? So are you catholic because that is truly what you believe is right or is it because that is all you have ever known? I am methodist and was raised methodist. I have been reading on other religions and planning to go to various churches. I feel that I should be open to those things I don’t know. Does that mean I am completely dumping my faith? No, I am educating myself further so I can evaluate all the options. Does that mean God is going to love me less? NO! And if you feel that way, then quite frankly don’t even respond to my post! As for not being catholic, there are aspects of your religion I do not agree with. You believe you are saved by grace and by participating in the seven sacraments. I was brought up believing you are saved by grace alone. I do not feel that I need to confess to a priest in order to be in good standing. I do not agree with the power of the pope…how in the church he can make no mistake. I do not agree with how only catholics can take communion. I was raised that if you are a believer of Christ then all are accepted. I have been to two catholic churches (one in a small town and one in a city). Both times I do not feel welcomed at all. I am unable to participate which to me that is not the way church should be. Those are just a few of the things I don’t see eye to eye with all of you. Does that make me any less of a person in God’s eye? NO! For me to become catholic would be a lie. Would you rather have me there because I truly believe in your religion or because everyone else thinks it is the right decision and that I just need some education? Besides looking at churches and educating ourselves, we have discussed remaining in separate religions. This may work for a while, but then what happens when we have children. How do we decide which religion they will be? I know most of you will answer catholic, but that’s not fair. How do you truly decide which parent will raise the children religiously? Now here is where I want the responses. If you have any suggestions on how to raise a family in a household with two religions…I would love to hear it. However, if you only answer is catholic…then please hold off on the responses.
I will be honest I supported my boyfriend when he put this post up, but I am extremely disappointed by the responses. I wish that you would all not be so judging of me just because I am not willing to become catholic. I think this is something we can make work…it just may be without all of your advice if it is only going to be more negative comments!!!

I’m sorry that you viewed the responses in such an unfortunate way. If you re-read your boyfriends post however you’ll see that some of it was invited. whether you convert to the Church or not is a matter for the Holy Spirit. Your boyfriend is however instructed in the faith. therefore he cannot claim to be ignorant of the claim that the Church makes to be THE Church Christ founded on earth. And therefore he is aware of the consequences of rejecting this claim. I am married (with a dispensation) to a woman who was an evangelical Christian. She is now in RCIA after 14 years together, however we never really disagreed on a lot of views and no important ones, like when we have kids where will they be baptized? if you are going to marry, you need to agree that you will be married in the Church or at minimum with an RC Deacon or Priest present to witness it. You’re boyfriend is bound to that by Church law. You’ll also have to agree to allow you’re husband to practice his faith unimpeded, accept children lovingly from God and raise them by the laws of His Church. Can you do all that and still practice your own faith? can you agree to all that willingly, and not go back on it as soon as you become pregnant? if you can’t you’re chances for a successful marriage are small at best.

Pray about this a great deal, because as you probably also know, from the Gospels, marry only once is Christ’s command. there is no undo button here, no matter what by the bible only groups have invented to excuse divorce and remarriage in light of the clarity of Christ’s command in both Mark and Mathews Gospels.

AM7870,
Is it really fair of you to expect your boyfriend to “church shop” when he already knows which church is right for him? Why must he be the one to give up what he believes, when you are the one who isn’t sure what it is that you believe? How does your conviction that there is no one true church trump his security within Catholicism? These are questions the two of you must ask yourselves and each other, and you must set aside your egos and be willing to listen to answers you may not like.

here is what we did. First of all i was catholic, my husband knew i am, will always be. He knew i could never become part of his church. My dad said i could go to his church with him on sunday BUT i still had to go to the catholic because of communion. I said sorry love, im only going once. He understood. Father said when we got married not to fight about it. If it comes down to the worst just go to church. So at first he went with me then to his. He rotated. I let him do this, let me explain why. It is not fair of me to ask him to leave his church. ITs just not. I cant leave mine. How could he ask that of me. So he knew going into the marriage the only thing he had to agree to is have the kids catholic. He agreed. I had enough faith in my church to believe in time that he would see why i loved my church. So i admit i never went to his, he did go with me. As the first year went by, he went with me more and more. Then one day he said i want to become catholic. I said the only way you can do that is if you truely want this, it cant be for me. I said ok i have one question? If we got divorced would you still stay with the catholic church? He asked why, I said the only way in my eyes i want you to become catholic is because you truely believe in it. I said if not its like you are using God. He said no i really want to and i want our kids to have one religion. Well its been 26 years now. And i am ashamed to say this sometimes i think he is a better catholic than i. Hope this helps. I guess what im saying if your force someone to do what you want it wont work anyway. Just keep your religion and dont let anyone take it off of you. But respect others also. And let GOD take care of the rest. ( now if the other person was in a cult of some sort thats a different story.)

AM7870,

The reason that “church shopping” is a bad thing is because it goes against Scripture. Jesus didn’t say that we should all look around and find the church that “feels right” to us – He set up ONE Church, with ONE head, and taught that we should all be ONE.

I encourage you too look more into the Catholic faith. My husband and I were both raised/married in the Lutheran Church, and about two years after our marriage my husband decided to convert to Catholicism – he had come to the conclusion that it was the only Church that had the FULLNESS of Truth. I was shocked and very much against the idea, but I reluctantly agreed to attend RCIA classes in order to learn more about Catholicism. Lo and behold, I found out that everything I thought I knew about Catholicism was either a myth or a half-truth, and I ended up converting too.

Just remember that if you and your boyfriend have children someday, he will be obligated to raise them in the Catholic faith – he will have to make promises to that effect in order to marry you in the Church. This is because we believe that while other religions may have elements of the Truth, Catholicism has the FULLNESS of Truth. The reason others have been encouraging your boyfriend to teach you more about Catholicism is because we want EVERYONE to share in the fullness of Truth – just as I’m sure your boyfriend wants for someone he loves. 🙂

Please stick around and learn more about the beautiful Catholic faith. Feel free to ask any questions and we’ll be more than happy to answer them and provide Scriptural support for Catholic beliefs. You may be surprised to find out that everything you “thought” you knew about the Catholic Church and its beliefs isn’t accurate at all (just like I did!).

AM7870,

A household with two religions… well, the Catholic has to promise to do their best in raising the children Catholic. That’s the rule if you’re to marry in a Catholic Church. The non-Catholic is only told of this, they don’t have to promise that. I know it looks harsh to the non-Catholic, but rules are hard to follow sometimes.

I don’t think you’re an awful person, by the way. Nor do I think you two should break up over religion. Some people can’t handle the difference and they probably should break up. But there are people who honestly love and can compromise in a way that it works and that neither’s beliefs are compromised.

Catholicism is the one true religion. We believe this. If we didn’t we’d be out looking for the one true religion. I know of a few different faiths, some of which are interesting enough that I would convert-- if I didn’t believe that I was already in the True Church.

As for shopping… I don’t think it’s a bad thing. Scott Hahn found his way to Catholicism that way. If it’s to find the one true Church when you don’t think you’re not in the right one, I can’t see that as bad. And you’re more educated by the end. Win-win.

Mhelman34,

You’re Catholic. I don’t know how Catholic, but you came to the forums. So at least Catholic enough to want to know the way to go about this all. You can’t really compromise your faith. And if you two do marry in the Catholic Church, you have to do your best to raise the children Catholic.

It can work, though. Inter-faith couples and marriages have been done before, are being done now and will be done in the future.

You’re both Christian. Pray. Prayer can lead to miracles. Pray and ask for a solution that fits you both, that doesn’t force either into a situation that they don’t want to be in.

And if you don’t mind I’ll pray for you as well.

God Bless and best wishes to you both.

My friend, I was in your situation about 2 years ago. Study www.scripturecatholic.com and then come back and re-read your Original Post. It will dumbfound you that you even considered leaving the Church! Needless to say, I am not with the girl anylonger not over religious issues as we would have expected, but over secular ones.

There is no compromise when it comes to Christ!

I just wanted to add this, which really stands out for me:
I have been to two catholic churches (one in a small town and one in a city). Both times I do not feel welcomed at all. I am unable to participate which to me that is not the way church should be.
This highlights the huge difference in attitude between Catholicism and many kinds of Protestantism. Is church about you, or is it about Christ? I myself am not yet Catholic and so I cannot yet receive the Eucharist, but I do not make this state of affairs into “all about me.” I still attend Mass and participate in every other way: praying, reciting the Nicene Creed, singing hymns. I do not approach Christ’s church with that attitude that Christ’s church owes me something. I approach it with the attitude that there is much that the church offers to everyone, but that a meaningful relationship with Christ and his church entails study, work and some sacrifice on my part. I would approach any church the same way, not just the Catholic Church although this is obviously where I have wound up. I personally could not trust a church that simply requires you to show up and mouth the correct words.

Really - just a little bit of humility makes life so much more manageable.

Education is a wonderful thing. I dont’ think anyone here would dispute this…

The origional post sounded as though you two were somehow indifferent to the whole process and would just settle on something to make peace. Not because you came to find truth. It doesn’t matter if you convert or not. But being indifferent or lukewarm in the matter is not to be taken lightly.

I’m thinking he didn’t hear what he wanted to hear. He’s not been back since his first post on the 9th.

Okay here is something very important. Unless things have changed you do not have to become catholic. But and this is a big big but in order for your boyfriend to be married in the catholic church you have to sign a paper to let your kids become baptised in the faith. Now if you are unwilling to do this well then there is no way he can get married in the church. Thats the big issue here. If you are saying i am willing to let him keep his faith but i am unwilling to sign the paper deals off. There is nothing he can do. thats it. He gives up his faith. If you love him and want to marry him and let him keep his faith you sign. end of story. See the thing you dont realize once you are catholic and i mean a true catholic there is no going back. People accuse us of being brain washed, whatever, the truth is no one can tell us our faith is a lie. No one. And as long as the bible is the bible and someone changes it, its will never happen, its impossible. Every single thing in the Catholic religion is in the bible. when people say where does it say that in the bible we show them. Then they say thats just the way you see it. But see thats the answer we see it. Thats why the faith wont be changed its there. black and white. no matter how much this boy loves you he cant help what he believes, and cant change it because you cant change the truth. Even if he marries outside his faith, if he is a true catholic he will be living a lie. thats it. i wish we could tell you what you want to hear. BUt see thats the whole problem with the catholic religion it wont tell you what you want to hear it only tells the truth. thats why people hate the religion and leave because it will change to suit others. a lie is a lie the truth is the truth. thats it

My dear friend, do not abandon the faith. Above all pray and spend time before Christ in the blessed Sacrament. If you do leave the faith then your soul is in jeopardy and I know you don’t want that, I will keep you and your girlfriend in my prayers.

I agree with you 110% Liza, now his girlfriend is here telling us that we are judging her, obviously they both have no clue.

Before I met my wife I had this SAME exact situation. My girlfriend was Pentecostal. Her mother asked me this, point blank. “Will you give up your religion to marry my daughter?”

I was like “What the sam !?!”

I turned it around on her and I asked “You are asking if I would turn my back on God to marry a person?” “Oh No!!!”

I was the first to reply to you boyfriend and I stand by what I said. “Don’t even go there!”

Can you two can still get married and have a happy family? Sure you can!! However asking your boyfriend to give up his faith or even suggesting that he go “church shopping”, if that is what you did, is a disgrace to your possible future husband. Why would you even ask or think about suggesting the he give up something that is or SHOULD be the core of his life?

What concerns me is you both want something to suit the two of you that “Oh you can be any religion you want as long as you believe in God” Right?

WRONG!!!

Sorry that we may sound arrogant here, but the problem here is you don’t know the truth, you are following the ideals of a man by the name of Martin Luther.

Do you even know who Martin Luther is? Do you even know the history of Christianity at all?

Why don’t you take some time to read up on who Martin Luther is and see where your beliefs came from.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Luther

A man in the 1540’s did not care for the Catholic Bible, what does he do, he takes out parts he does not like and changes words around to suit “HIMSELF”

What happens since that time? Over 40,000 different Protestant religions are spawned. All claiming they are the truth. Yet the Catholic church is the same church that Christ Started in 33 A.D. and is the same church he handed to St. Peter, our 1st pope!

Why don’t you read that link of Martin Luther, that is exactly where protestant religions came from. Now years later people such as yourself are lost, VERY, VERY, lost and think religion is about how the person feels, what is known as Sola Scriptura, or “Faith alone” a word that Martin Luther himself added to the bible and has caused MASS confusion ever since.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sola_scriptura

I would suggest you watch this to understand The Reformation and the spawn of protestant religions and where your thinking about religion came from.

After that I would suggest seeing more videos here…

I can share stories from both sides of this issue. My Dad is Catholic, and was dating a Lutheran. Things got serious, the girl refused to budge from her Lutheran upbringing.

Dad broke it off and started dating my Mom, who was a convert prior to their dating. Because of his experience with the Lutheran girl, he wouldn’t date anyone who wasn’t Catholic.

They will celebrate their 50th anniversary this April.

My wife on the other hand, was raised Baptist. She converted to Catholicism shortly after we got married. We never went to the Baptist church together, but she did attend Mass with me before we married.

We’ve been married 17 years this June, and “church shopping” or “compromising” on our faith was never an option. My wife was Baptist, but not active…nevertheless a wonderful, virtuous girl. She was Baptist because that’s what she was raised, not because she chose it. She CHOSE the Catholic Church.

Faith is important. It is the basis for a healthy, long-lasting marriage.

In Islam we ask our women to convert, if that fails we demand it, if that fails then we beat them into submission.

Not really. My wife is Catholic and I’m Muslim, though she sees validity in my particular way of belief. If that can work, anything can, so maybe just do your own thing. What I couldn’t tolerate is someone who rejected my beliefs straight away.
Don’t want to hijack this thread but I’d be interested in how y’all are making this work, and the instruments y’all use to overcome the obstacles.

Why don’t ya start a thread and field questions or point me to a existing link. The perspective of one living in the real world far exceeds those in the world of theory.

A lot of you advised him to either dump me or **educate me **and convert me to catholicism. Quite frankly if those are the two solutions then this website is not very helpful because neither of those are an option!!!
What’s wrong with education? I always thought education was a wonderful thing and since you have clearly stated you want to learn about other faiths than what is wrong with learning about what it is that the Catholic Church REALLY believes. For the record we also believe that we are saved by the grace of God ALONE. 👍
For the record it has been my experience that most of the people on this board are people who converted to the Church AFTER they grew up. They were not raised Catholic.
No one on here has an issue with learning about other faiths. The problem is treating faith as casually as you would buying a pair of shoes. Your faith in God should be far more important than that.
Than WHY are you asking your boyfriend, who you supposedly love, to “dump” his faith? Why can’t you love him for who he is? This of course includes him being Catholic.
How well have you actually studied what it is that our Church teaches? Have you gotten your information from actual Church sources or are you getting your information second hand? I would recommend going to the source before making a judgement about what we believe. Here is the Catechism and the Compendium, which is an easier read than the Catechism. I would encourage you both to learn what it is that the Church actually teaches.
NO!
We never said that God would love you less or that you are anyless a person in God’s eyes because you are not Catholic. In fact our Church teaches that ALL people are created in the image and likeness of God, regardless of their beliefs. Our Church also believes that ALL religions have some truth to them.
The only thing you can not do in a Catholic Mass is receive Communion. You can do everything else. Provided you agree with it. We will not ask you to lie! The reason you can not receive Communion is receiving Communion shows that you are in union with us and our beliefs. Since you clearly are not than to receive the Eucharist would be to lie. I don’t think you want to lie now do you?
For me to become catholic would be a lie. Would you rather have me there because I truly believe in your religion or because everyone else thinks it is the right decision and that I just need some education? Besides looking at churches and educating ourselves, we have discussed remaining in separate religions.
We would far rather you become Catholic because that is what you feel God is calling you too. Again if you have no problem with educating yourself on the different faiths than what is wrong with educating yourself about what we really do believe? In order for your marriage to work BOTH of you need to be willing to do this. Once again what is so wrong with learning about what it is that the Church actually does teach? Once again check out the two links posted above and on the second post below in order to properly educate yourself about what it is that the Catholic Church teaches. Don’t simply go on hearsay. For the record it would not hurt for you both to learn about what Methodist church teaches as well. It’s my understanding, from the lovely Methodist that we have on our board, that Methodisim and Catholicism are not that far apart in belief.

I’m sorry, but there is no choice in this matter. The children must be raised Catholic. If you can not agree to that than how do you ever expect to have a good marriage with your boyfriend? You are asking him to go against what his faith believes and teaches. We believe God is not one who is willing to compromise on the important things. After all, even the pagans of old and the Israelites believed in raising their children up in their own faith.
I will be honest I supported my boyfriend when he put this post up, but I am extremely disappointed by the responses. I wish that you would all not be so judging of me just because I am not willing to become catholic. I think this is something we can make work…it just may be without all of your advice if it is only going to be more negative comments!!!
And I wish you would open you mind to learn about what it is that we really believe before making up your mind about us. Again the two links I gave you will help you to learn about us.
