Technologically, it’s better. But that’s true of most ages. Even the Dark Ages, while skimpy in written work, made tremendous advances in metalworking and horse gear. The divorse rate for FIRST marriages is 20% the “ridiculously high” comes from people married 2, 3…8 times.
You people need to get your heads out of the 1950’s. It is not worse
Morally, it’s not better. Abortion is legal and we pay for it (that requires quite the acceptance on the part of us Christians). Human experimentation, known as embryonic stem cells, is embraced. Gay marriage is/will be legal (and the discrimination lawsuits have already started). We have cameras on street corners. We’re told what kind of light bulbs we can have. We are forced to buy insurance. Most people sleep around and literally laugh at all the “virgins” out there. The list is endless.
If you want to play the statistics game, we can. I can dig up dozens of statistics “proving” the state of marriage is a joke. You can then dig up dozens of statistics “proving” it’s not that bad at all. It’s a fun game. It’s like that kid game where kid A says to kid B “My pile of action figures is bigger” so I’m right. You can see it in action at the Presidential debates. Quite fun. It makes each person sound intelligent and researched, but there is no truth there.
But one of the reasons for your statistic of 1st marriages is that fewer people are getting married without living together or, lets call it what it is, shacking up. As more people cohabitate(whatever that is), I expect that the marriage survival rate will eventually skyrocket to around 95%. Why? Because the only people getting married will be those that actually value marriage as a sacred vow not only between a guy and gal, but more importantly with God.
As to your comment about the DC suburbs, I live outside of DC. Those aren’t real churches. There’s a massive one being built just down the road from me. They peddle the same feel good pollyanna, “don’t judge”, philosophy that has successfully twisted Christianity. Church has become a feel good square filler to a great many of these folks. That is not renewal. It’s the same bury your head in the sand mentality that the Catholic church has/had regarding the child abuse situation. Just once, I’d like to see the Pope get up there and give a clear brutally honest speech on the abuse issue broadcast on youtube and as many news networks as possible. Not a translated speech or written missal or some other lightweight message, but a real heartfelt message, the kind you find in the gospels and in Paul’s letters. And if he lacks the health or linguistic ability, I’m sure he can stand behind one of the cardinals who will give that speech. A united front for truth would be quite the rallying call.
It’s kind of sad. The only time people see the real ugly underneath is after some horrific catastrophe. But at that point it’s too late. Yes, the 1950s had significant problems (like any age because of our fallen nature), but the movement was in a positive direction. Today, it’s just the opposite.
And chevalier, if you’re using the Zerg, make sure you use Dark Swarm all the time for you melee units. The Terrans have heck with that combo.
