In Reiki we discover the same problem illustrated in Therapeutic Touch and related forms of spiritistic/psychic healing. The practice appears innocent and many people assume it “can’t hurt.” Further, “Since Reiki doesn’t interfere with conventional medical treatment in any way, nurses can use it in the hospital to comfort the sick and control pain.” But the manipulation of occult energies is anything but harmless. It may easily produce serious emotional and spiritual problems. For this reason alone Reiki should be avoided.

I certainly don’t advocate all so-called “New Age” practices, but most of the time criticism comes more from ignorance of the practice vs. any actual understanding and knowledge. Its the old “it doesn’t fit into my paradym, so it must be bad” approach.

Ever heard of laying on of hands in the bible? I believe Jesus and the apostles healed in this fashion all the time. Who’s to say Reiki isn’t some minor form of the methodology they used?

The basic point is that sexual energy is something we all have, something we all re-direct towards work, family, reading, athletics, or spirituality. And if you’re celibate, you have even more energy to devote to God.
If Reiki does have ‘tantric’ connnections, then, from a Buddhist perspective, that tantric connection could mean that some Reiki practitioners might practice celibacy (or simply discipline their sexual urges), in order to re-direct their energy, intention, will, and love, towards the healing of the patient.So, yes, celibate monks, of any tradition, are practicing a form of practice that has commonalities with Hindu and Buddhist tantra.

Thats my opinion about that alleged origin of Reiki. My wife is a Reiki Master, so I know something about this healing technique, although I’m certainly no expert. There is nothing evil about it whatsoever. The purpose of it is too heal and provide well-being; there is no sexual connection to it.
As I posted earlier, many Christians (including catholics) practice Reiki, I even posted a Christian Reiki website. I can’t speak for other “New Age” dubbed things.
If people don’t want anything to do it with it, fine. However, don’t blast something if you don’t have any really knowledge of it, except from what you’ve read in some questionable source.

Well my friend, due to my ignorance on the subject of buddhism, I cannot address these issues with clarity–I’m sure others can. However if you and Mike and others here would like to participate in Reiki treatments, I am surely not the one to prevent you from doing so. Good luck.
